Yeah, I couldn't resist, but since the folks have been selected to do this, figured write it up, if and when I have time, hopefully the other FOFCers in the beta will too.

This is an important year for PureS9im, as OOTPBB2006 is coming and apparently has a good chance to be the FM of baseball.. but PureSim has always been a good option in the wars. I'm hoping the two games push each other.

For the primary test, I downloaded the Alpha Build set up by the folks over at Matrix (and NO, I won't share it).. to my home machine, since I won't have quiet days at work very often. This it the first Alpha Build let out to the Testers.. so take any thing with a grain of salt.. it can and will be better.

Generated a Fictional League, 16 Teams, in Two Leagues: The Patriot League (with East and West divisions), and the Federal League (North and South)

One thing that needs to be tweaked is the money.. if you want it to look realistic (not $300 million), is tweak the % of money by region.. I set it to about 45% of what the game suggests, and well, the game would be in the biggest boom period ever after the initial draft.

My Boston team is the preseason favorites, but it comes at a cost. The cost is a $105 Million payroll. Hartford who's in my division, is 2nd at $102 Million. This goes down, but not far, as only three teams are below $90 million. Of course, if you ignore the #'s and instead look at how they match up.. or chop the % down even further, I'm sure it'll look better.

I wish the game had HTML output so I could copy some things out. and show you what my guys look like

I've played two games before I wrote this, going 1-1. Nice thing is the tracking of the ball makes reading it much more fun then the barebones PBP that it did (If I had ANY programming skills, I'd offer to write a PBP module for it, I mean, think of the old Baseball for Windows game (think it was subtitled Broadcast Blast).. wasn't great, but since Ernie Harwell was calling the game, it sounded 9 million times better (in speech or just on the screen).

I really want this to be opened up, imagine making an annoucer pack, so you can customize how the game announces plays.. won't be a Ernie Harewell or Vin Scully, but it'll be SO much better then it is.. not that it's bad as is. just.. utilitarian.

My Power Hitter crushed a HR.. and the ball just kept going and going and going.. and a little box popped up and told me how far it went (457 feet. Wow. Crush. Crush Real Good).

Can't do much this morning, because I have to hurry to work before they shutdown the road for the Boston Marathon.. but I finished the first week, and here's some things.

Saw the first no hitter in any league, with Orlando's Teddy Elder needing just 95 pitches to defeat the Nashville Banjos (appropriate name, huh?) 5-0, allowing only 2 baserunners in the game.

Other features after the first week's PSPN issue:

They use Bill Harris's Power/Speed # to track players who are both threats at the plate and on the basepath.. it's an esoteric stat , but interesting none the less.

Right out of the old Mel Allen This Week in Baseball, they have a listing of some of the sillier/cooler nicknames in the league... like Atlanta's Lloyd "Spooz" Williams

They also track the longest HR's of the season.. so far the longest blast has been a mammoth 475 feet.. (umpires in cases like that don't throw a new baseball out to the pitcher till after the batter has trotted around the basepaths and scored to make sure there are no unfortunate accidents)

Apparently they track players by what school they came from, because they have a top 25 colleges (by player representation)

They track the highlites of the week, and current injuries and their status.

Trust me, games like BM2007 talk about simming 100 years of baseball in 16 minutes? That's completely ANTI the focus of what I've seen from 2006 so far
.. the amount of detail from week to week is awesome.

Ok. Off to work, more late tonight if I don't get a new build.

One of the most important things in a career baseball sim is the trade deadline. Looks like a bit of a slow trading deadline, I see nine trades in the eight days from 7/23-7/31. Let's take a look at a couple of them..

New Orleans is at 54-54 as of 8/1, and they are only four games out. They have the 2nd best defense in the league, allowing 391 runs in 108 games, but they've only scored 393 themselves made a trade with Buffalo (55-53, 6 games out behind Boston in their division)

Minor Leaguer Eric Varnell (25) was sent to Buffalo. He's fast (81), but doesn't have much potential (38). He's a September call up at best probably. He has 2 years left on his contract

Buffalo sends Martin Munoz, a utility infielder, who has probably reached his potential at 28, and is what I call a 4A player.. good enough to merit a cup of coffee, (58 Contact, 55 Eye, 60 Speed), but he won't be a full time major leaguer. Also, his contract expires at the end of the year.

Verdict: Minor trade, but something good for each team

Charlotte - Providence trade:

Providence, is way out of it, they are the worst team in the league (by one game), at 41-67 on the year. Charlotte is last in their division, but at 54-54, they're not out of it, as they are 8 games back of the leader.

This trade is kinda strange to me, as Providence traded Edgar Kellar (.217, 1 HR, 2 RBI in 24 games) to Charlotte for Edward Parkerson (.279, 9, 49, 22 SB).. but Kellar has loads more potential (71 to 38). Apparently Charlotte thinks that they are out of it for the year (8 GB is a lot to make up, especially when you're looking at three teams), and look for Kellar to improve the rest of the way, while Providence is tired of losing and wanted to trade a struggler with potential for a guy they knew could perform, quicker (Keller had 5 years, for 1587K left on his contract, but Parkerson still has 3 years left, at 3089K a season)

Verdict: A mite bit iffy, but I think I understand the reasoning behind the move

Cool. I'll be following Foz -- always good to have something to compare.

Thanks Vince.. :) Ran into my first bugcrash during an offseason, but it's early and this is the kinda thing we're trying to catch.

Really a fun game.. my Boston team went on a cold streak the last 15 games of the year, going 3-12 in the last 15 games of the year and ending up losing all of our 3 game lead and ending up 5 games back of Hartford.

I had a blast playing last night, trying to focus in on alot of detailed issues with the PBP and the menus on the play screen. Most of which you shot down :)

Looks cool. Thanks Frank. And shaun, if you're reading this, is there any easy way for me to get questions to you?

Well, if there's something game-related you have a question about, let me know, and I'll pass it along.

bump.

I was just managing a game and I received an in game injury, I remember getting asked a question on some forum about the lack of in game injuries.

Well, it appears to be in the game.

Good to see that it's back. How many games so far? How many injuries?
