I lived in Belgium for three years. The amount of tax withheld is ridiculous. No, it's criminal, especially when you consider the lousy services and bureaucratic nonsense one has to put up with.
Luckily, I was working for a U.S. employer who understood this and upon my return I was compensated for the taxes I had to pay. They had some formula that worked out what I paid in Belgium and what I would have paid in the U.S. and paid me the difference. Granted, I was subsequently taxed on the "difference" I was paid, but it was better than nothing.
