I did this last year and it sparked some good conversation. Time to evaluate the 2001 draft.
http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/years/2001
Who is the steal of the draft? T.J. Houshmandzadeh Rd 7 Pick 204
Who is the biggest bust? Jamar Fuckin Fletcher

Dolphins Draft 2001
1. Jamar Fletcher (26) CB Wisconsin- How about drafting a backup dime back in the first round. 4 INT in 71 career games.
2a Chris Chambers (52)WR Wisconsin-Wanny's best draft pick of his tenure.
3a Travis Minor (85) RB Florida State- Not a bad 3rd down back when given the chance.
3b Morlon Greenwood (88) LB Syracuse- An average to good starter Now with the Texans.
5 Shawn Draper (156) T Alabama- Did absolutely nothing. Now with ATL
6a Brandon Winey (164) T Louisiana State- Did absolutely nothing. Now with Carolina
6b Josh Heupel (177) QB Oklahoma- Who cares

I don't think the Pats actually had a "steal" in this draft, unless you consider that to be Light. Biggest dissapointment...Kenyatta Jones who should have been the "steal" but ended up being a psycho-hosebeast. Gotta give the Pats an A for this draft though, for picking up Seymour AND Light.

Overall grade: F - not one of these players is a starter for this team
1-7 Andre Carter OLB California - bust - had decent first year and declined ever since. Next time you hear "his technique is perfect" think "he isn't big enough to play this position"

3-80 Kevan Barlow RB Pittsburgh - better as a second back. Has been AWFULL as starter. Yes the line is bad, but scrubs like Hicks look better then him. Of course part of the problem is the absurd contract Donahue gave him.

I was just about to do this one...The Seymour choice got killed at the time in the Boston media - everyone wanted either D. Terrel or K. Robinson. But I'd say that worked out. It's kind of strange that the Pats' last draft pre-dynasty didn't produce a single contributor after the top two guys. But Seymour alone makes the draft a success.

As someone who watched them play all 4 years, I'm still surprised at how that pairing has turned out. Chambers jumped out of the gym at the combine, but he never really showed the complete package. Fletcher seemed to have it all, except ideal size. Oh well, 1 out of 2 ain't bad. At least they didn't draft Jamal Reynolds at #10.

New England
1(6) - Richard Seymour - A++
2(48) - Matt Light - A+
3(86) - Brock Williams - F
4(96) - Kenyatta Jones - C+
4(119) - Jabari Holloway - D
5(163) - Hakim Akbar - D
6(180) - Arthur Love - F
6(200) - Leonard Myers - C
7(216) - Owen Pochman - D
7(239) - TJ Turner - F
On the strength of the top two players alone, a solid B. Jones and Myers got some time, but not enough from rounds 3-7 to justify anything higher. Still, 2 All-Pros, at DT and LT, both key to 3 Super Bowls mean anything less than a B is harsh.

Detroit Lions
1 (18) Jeff Backus, T, Michigan - Good, but not great left tackle. Has been most consistant on the O-line, but that's not so much a compliment to him as it is a statement about what has been next to him. Hopefully can take it to the next level with new staff.
2 (50) Dominic Raiola, C, Nebraska - Too inconsistant. Has the talent to be one of the best in the middle, but just hasn't put it together. If he can't play better for new staff it will be time to look for a new center.
2 (61) Shaun Rogers, DT, Texas - Thank God!
5 (148) Scotty Anderson, WR, Grambling - Not bad, but not good either. Was a decent backup.
5 (149) Mike McMahon, QB Rutgers - If he could complete a pass he would be a pretty good QB.
6 (173) Jason Glenn, LB, Texas A&M - Looked alright on special teams, then the Lions cut him. He ended up with the Jets and did nothing.

Ah, Mike Sherman's first draft. What a colossal disaster that was. I would give it an F-, but that would be too generous:
1. 10 Green Bay Jamal Reynolds DE Florida State
2. 41 Green Bay Robert Ferguson WR Texas A&M
3. 71 Green Bay Bhawoh Jue FS Penn State
72 Green Bay Torrance Marshall MLB Oklahoma
4. 105 Green Bay Bill Ferrario G Wisconsin
6. 198 Green Bay David Martin TE Tennessee

Apart from how good Fletcher looked at the combine, the real problem is that the Dolphins had no business drafting a 1st round CB in 2001.

1 - David Terrell - Bust. Gone.
2 - Anthony Thomas - Decent RB, Gone.
3 - Mike Gandy - Backup OT, Gone
4 - Karon Riley - Nobody. Gone.
5 - Bernard Robertson - Nobody. Gone.
7 - John Capel - Didn't make team. Gone.
God awful draft for the Bears. One of MANY from the late 90's through about 03.

Carolina Panthers:
1 11 Dan Morgan MLB Miami - Starter and one of the better defenders on the team... when he's not injured
2 44 Kris Jenkins DT Maryland - One of the best defensive tackles in the league, some would say the best... when he's not injured
3 74 Steve Smith WR Utah - Hell yes :)
4 106 Chris Weinke QB Florida State - backup QB, had one absolutely terrible season as a starter, redeemed himself in the eyes of many Panther fans as a valuable backup with a last minute drive to earn a win last season after Delhomme got hurt in a game
5 143 Jarrod Cooper SS Kansas State - 96 tackles in 5 years, now with oakland
6 175 Dee Brown RB Syracuse - 381 yards rushing in 5 years for 4 different teams
7 211 Louis Williams C Louisiana State - No longer in the league
The first 4 picks are probably as good a value as anyone else got in this draft.

Pittsburgh Steelers
19 Casey Hampton NT Texas A+++
One of, if not the best player in the league at his position.
39 Kendrell Bell OLB Georgia C
Won D-ROY, was going to become our next great linebacker. And then he developed an addiction to the hot tub. Nets us a 4th rounder(compensatory) this season.
111 Mathias Nkwenti T Temple F
Cut, didnt really do much
146 Chukky Okobi C Purdue C, but could go higher.
Believe it or not, he's still on the team, and will likely be our starting center next year. Has played well in a backup type role.
181 Rodney Bailey DE Ohio State D
Back again this offseason, might make the team.
182 Roger Knight OLB Wisconsin F
216 Chris Taylor WR Texas A&M F
We landed one early impact player in Bell, then he flamed out. Hampton was a great pick, dude has the ability to destroy an offensive line on any given play. Okobi may finally make an impact next season, but he's provided good depth. Bailey has been a couple other places, look forward to seeing what will be up with him this year, as he may make an impact again.

Colts:
1(30) Reggie Wayne WR Miami (FL)
2(6) Idrees Bashir DB Memphis
3(29) Cory Bird DB Virginia Tech
4(23) Ryan Diem T Northern Illinois
5(21) Raymond Walls DB Southern Mississippi
6(30) Jason Doering DB Wisconsin
7(20) Rick DeMulling T Idaho State
As is the norm with the Colts draft history since 98, I think that qualifies as a success. Wayne is a star, Diem has started 67 games at guard, and DeMulling has started 46 games at tackle. None of the DBs amounted to anything although Bashir, while not starter quality, as proven to be at least a somewhat capable NFL player.

Carolina's draft in 2001 actually had good meat in it:
(1-11) Dan Morgan, MLB, Miami--Currently starting at MLB when healthy
(2-44) Kris Jenkins, DT, Maryland--Part of one of the strongest D-lines in the NFL
(3-74) Steve Smith, WR, Utah--Given the last two healthy years (broke leg in '04), to say this was a steal would be a mild understatement
(4-106) Chris Weinke, QB, FSU--Currently the #2 behind Delhomme, never had a chance to prove himself over a long period of time
(5-143) Jerrod Cooper, SS, K-State--Career backup now in Oakland.
(6-175) Dee Brown, RB, Syracuse--Had a brief uptick in 2002, but has bounced around the league since then.
(7-211) Louis Williams, C, LSU--Not in the league
(7-227) Mike Roberg, TE, Idaho--Ditto

Thanks. I like to look back at old draft previews to see how "smart" Mel Kiper and other really were;) For example, I actually remember the talk about how athletic Andre Carter was and how he was a Charles Haley clone.

he was the son of a former DE that played for the Bronco's I think. All Mel and the other talking heads and especially the Bay Area media talked about was how his dad had been teaching him how to play DE since he could walk and his technique was perfect, blah, blah, blah.
Now if it was 3rd & 23 and he was going against a rookie tackle every once in awhile he would put a nice move on the guy and get the sack. Of course every time they ran at him he got blocked 10 yards off the ball - but whose perfect?

Ah, Mike Sherman's first draft. What a colossal disaster that was. I would give it an F-, but that would be too generous:
1. 10 Green Bay Jamal Reynolds DE Florida State
2. 41 Green Bay Robert Ferguson WR Texas A&M
3. 71 Green Bay Bhawoh Jue FS Penn State
72 Green Bay Torrance Marshall MLB Oklahoma
4. 105 Green Bay Bill Ferrario G Wisconsin
6. 198 Green Bay David Martin TE Tennessee
Ferguson hasn't been that bad. His receiving stats aren't quite what a good 2nd rounder should give you, but he was a very good special teams player. David Martin has been a contributor, which is more than can be expected for a 6th rounder. I'd give it an F, not an F-. ;)

Michael Bennett was the only one to have an impact on the NFL, but even he wasnt very good. None of these players are still on the team, now thats a bad draft. after looking at the Vikings recent drafts, its hard to believe they arnt drafting in the top 10 each year.

One of the Jets very best drafts in last 25 years, all things considered. Moss was hurt early, then had a breakthrough year, then kind of turned to crap before being shipped off to Washington (where he immediately looked like a superstar once again).
Jordan was a total steal and for 1-2 years was the best RB on the team, before Curtis had the monster 2004 season.
McKenzie had finally become a solid RT before running off for the ridiculous paycheck the Giants gave him. Huge pay raise without having to move? How can you blame the guy.
Jamie Henderson was improving before f'ing himself up in a motorcycle accident and missing all of 2005. I couldn't tell you for sure if he's on the Jets roster or any roster right now.
James Reed has been in the mix all 5 years and is still with the team, getting more reps each year.
Peko never made it with the team.
If you could get this level of production out of the draft every year, any team would be a perennial playoff team.

Denver Broncos
1 24 Willie Middlebrooks CB Minnesota - El Busto. Hurt coming into camp, never made it. With SF I believe.
2 51 Paul Toviessi DE Marshall - Injured early. I don't think he ever played a down for Denver.
3 87 Reggie Hayward DE Iowa State - Great pick. They developed him into a nice pass rusher. Left for a big check with the Jags last year.
4 113 Ben Hamilton G Minnesota - Starter at G and will be the C when Nalen leaves. Great, Great pick.
4 120 Nick Harris P California - Was traded or cut before the end of camp.
6 190 Kevin Kasper WR Iowa - Worthless
------------------------------------------------------
Somewhere around a C. It's tough when the first two picks bomb, but it's not exactly easy to grab a 10 sack DL and a long term starter on the OLine in the middle rounds either.

7(36) Quentin McCord - WR Mr. Irrelevant?
This draft was obviously marked by Michael Vick, who was chosen for more than just footballing reasons. Vick's arrival coincided with the revival of the team; he is most definitely The Franchise and has been from draft day 2001. To move up and select Vick, the Falcons traded the #5? pick (used by the Chargers to select Tomlinson), WR Tim Dwight , a 2001 3rd rounder and a future 2nd rounder.
Crumpler has turned out to be very good value in the 2nd round, though he struggled his first few seasons. The lower picks didn't amount to much, though I seem to remember Forney, Stewart and Hall appearing in a few games and I believe Forney started for a little while, so that's something.
The overall grade essentially depends on what you think of Vick's performance. Now if the Chargers drafted someone other than Tomlinson, maybe it looks a little different, but comparing what could have been is kinda the exercise here. :) I think Vick is nothing more than a glorified Jake Plummer at this point, and that he's never going to make 'The Leap' into a top tier passing QB, so that's what keeps this grade slightly lower.

Let's see:
1. Gardner was a bust.
2. Smoot... Hahahahaha... how you like him now, Vikings fans? :D
3. Rosenfels - Is he still in the league? Last I heard, he was in Miami...
4. McCants was a serviceable 4th WR for a while, I guess...
5. Monds? Who? I doubt he made the roster that year.
So, I'd grade this draft a solid D. Maybe higher, if Smoot recovers... but do we get credit for drafting him and then letting him leave?

Colts:
As is the norm with the Colts draft history since 98, I think that qualifies as a success. Wayne is a star, Diem has started 67 games at guard, and DeMulling has started 46 games at tackle. None of the DBs amounted to anything although Bashir, while not starter quality, as proven to be at least a somewhat capable NFL player.
I actually like this draft. A Pro Bowler, Solid O-lineman, and Bashir is not that bad when he is not getting hurt.

Several of these players have seen significant playing time in the NFL. Garza and Stewart have been starters (both now on other teams), and McCord played some special teams. I would say this was an A- draft (two pro-bowlers on the top, and several other players that were contributers to the team).

Peko never made it with the team.Peko went to the Amsterdam Admirals and after that played a backup role for the Colts in 2003 and 2004. He didn't play in 2005 after being released by the Panthers late in pre-season. He's recently been picked up by the Texans.

Holy Crap! This Bengals draft is pretty spectacular.
1- Justin Smith - Not the sack guy they hoped for, but a tackling machine that starts.
2- Chad Johnson - Three time AFC recieving yardage leader.
3- Sean Brewer - Even at the time he looked like a terrible pick.
4- Rudi Johnson - Has team yardage and carries records.
5- Victor Leyva - Didn't pan out.
6- Riall Johnson - Didn't pan out.
7- T.J. Houshmanzadeh - One of the top three #2 recievers.
In one draft they got two starting WRs, a starting RB and a starting DE.

4 120 Nick Harris P California - Was traded or cut before the end of camp.
Not that it means much to Denver, but Harris is now a pretty quality punter for the Lions, which is arguably the team's most important position ;)

I agree... but the sentance makes me laugh.
it's like - "benchwarmer of the year" or something (an award I actually one in my first year playing for my uni team)

Yeah, Nick Harris pushed Tom Rouen hard for the job in Denver and nearly won it. The next year, Rouen got waived for Micah Knorr. It took Knorr a year to get comfortable, and I was really wishing that the Broncos had kept Harris.
In the end, Knorr ended up being pretty decent for his couple of years in Denver, and now the Broncos have Sauerbrun, but they would've gotten along fine with Nick Harris. At least the Lions ended up with a pretty good punter out of the whole situation.

If you could get this level of production out of the draft every year, any team would be a perennial playoff team.
Even thought they lost Jordan, this year he brings back a compensatory #3, which is pretty sweet as well.

Several of these players have seen significant playing time in the NFL. Garza and Stewart have been starters (both now on other teams), and McCord played some special teams. I would say this was an A- draft (two pro-bowlers on the top, and several other players that were contributers to the team).
Agreed on all counts. It was a pretty nice draft all around and even though Garza and Stewart are playing somewhere else, the Falcons still get credit for drafting them and grooming them.

Fair enough. I was grading based only on what these guys did as Falcons. Agreed it's most likely an A as far as the selections go.
I remember liking McCord as a 7th round pick too.

2001 was one of the Eagles' weaker drafts:
1(25) - Freddie Mitchell: He had the catch against GB, but otherwise didn't do anything of note. One of the most disappointing first round picks, made even worse for me because he was a Bruin. D- (would be an F without the big catch in the playoffs.)
2(55) - Quinton Caver - A Linebacker who never lived up to his "potential" and has been essentially worthless. F
3(63) - Derrick Burgess - Derrick contributed 6 sacks in 2001, but did little else the next 3 years with the Eagles. Now a Raider. D-
3(88) Packaged with 6(187) pick to get a 2nd rounder from from Miami in 2002. That 2nd round pick ended up being Sheldon Brown who had one very good year for them so far. Perhaps the best move of the draft for the Eagles. A
4(121) Correll Buckhalter - Had 8 rushing TD's and over 500 yards for the Eagles in 2003 when they had the dynamic trio of Duce, Buckhalter, and Westbrook (who each had at least 7 TD's rushing.) However, injuries have damaged his career. B-
5(147) TE Tony Stewart - Never really contributed for the Eagles. A wasted pick for the most part. F
5(155) A.J. Feeley - The QB brought back a 2nd round pick from Miami. Great value in that regard from their 2nd round pick. This pick became WR Reggie Brown who had an excellent Rookie season. Feeley played well in limited duty. This move is the best of the Eagles' draft as I think Brown is going to end up being a very good/great WR. A+
They traded their 6th round pick in the aforementioned move.
They traded their 7th round pick to Carolina for TE Luther Broughton in 1999. He never contributed much. D-
The selection of Freddie Mitchell who was clearly a bust for a 1st round pick hurts this draft the most for me. However, the 5th round selection of Feeley who brought back a 2nd rounder that became Reggie Brown really saves it. Also, the pickup of Sheldon Brown in 2002 for the 3rd and 6th in 2001 also is a very nice move. Therefore, overall I'd give the draft a B-

The Bills Draft was actually pretty darn good. Clements is a top 10 Corner in the league and is our franchise corner. Schobel has led the team in sacks for the last two years as our best DE. Henry had a couple 1,000 yard seasons before Willis MaGahee entered the picture. Ron Edwards was our starting DT last year before injury, I believe he is no longer on the team though. Jonas Jennings was our starting left tackle for several three years before being let go in free agency to the 49ers. Brandon Spoon was a solid backup linebacker until injuries ended his career. Marques Sullivan started some games at guard in 2002, but was nothing special. He became even fatter and was cut in 2003 I believe. Driver and Leary were special teams players for one. Overall not a bad draft.

Yep. This was the start of something beautiful. Chad, Rudi and TJ=absolute steals considering where they were drafted and Justin is a solid player.
I don't get some of you in this tread giving F's for 5,6,and 7 rounders who haven't done much. Especially 6 and 7's. Those guys don't contribute more often than they do.

Quite frankly, I only care what they did in their time for the Eagles unless the trade of the player in question brought in significant talent.
Sure, Burgess played very well for the Raiders, but he didn't contribute enough for the Eagles and he didn't bring them back enough talent in return. That is true even more so for Stewart.

19 Casey Hampton NT Texas A+++
One of, if not the best player in the league at his position.
...
Hampton was a great pick, dude has the ability to destroy an offensive line on any given play.
2 (61) Shaun Rogers, DT, Texas - Thank God!
Now consider how awful the Texas Longhorn defensive coaching was when we had both of these guys and couldn't stop the run.

Unless its a draft day trade I think you have to give the team credit for finding talented players whether or not they are still with the team in 2006. From the third round on the Eagles hit with every pick and that's pretty damn impressive.

Seattle Seahawks
1 (9) - Koren Robinson, WR (North Carolina State) - Didn't live up to his draft status and ultimately was cut, but wasn't a bust either; had a big sophomore season and decent 3rd season.
1 (17) - Steve Hutchinson, G (Michigan) - An absolute stud and one of the best picks of the draft overall. Too bad for Seattle they flubbed on transitioning him instead of franchising him so they ended up with no compensation for losing him.
2 (40) - Ken Lucas, CB (Mississippi) - A great value, has turned out to be one of the better corners in the league. Left as a free agent.
3 (82) - Heath Evans, FB (Auburn) - Was intended to be Mack Strong's replacement, but Strong's longevity prevented that from ever happening. Evans has gone on to get some playing time with New England.
4 (104) - Orlando Huff, OLB (Fresno State) - Ended up starting quite a few games for Seattle with injuries to Chad Brown and Anthony Simmons. Now starting with Arizona.
4 (127) - Curtis Fuller, FS (Texas Christian) - Not in the league, I don't think he made the Seahawks roster after being drafted.
4 (128) - Floyd Womack, T (Mississippi State) - 'Pork Chop' has been a valuable reserve on the Seahawks line and is the likely replacement at LG for Hutchinson.
5 (140) - Alex Bannister, WR (Eastern Kentucky) - Has stuck with the Seahawks primarily due to his special teams prowess. Has been unlucky with injuries, still has the potential to emerge as a #4 or even #3 WR.
6 (172) - Josh Booty, QB (Louisiana State) - Didn't stick with the team, out of the league.
7 (210) - Harold Blackmon, SS (Northwestern) - Don't think he stuck with the team, out of the league.
7 (222) Dennis Norman, C (Princeton) - A backup for 3 years, moved on to Jacksonville and may have played himself into a starting role.
7 (237) - Kris Kocurek, DT (Texas Tech) - Didn't stick with Seattle, now with Tennessee as roster filler.
A highly successful draft in that most of these guys are still in the league, one is arguably the best in the league at his position (Hutchinson) and another is at a near All-Pro level (Lucas). Less successful for the Seahawks in that quite a few are no longer with the team with no compensation for their loss.

1 28 28 Derrick Gibson DB Florida State - still with the team after being released and resigned a month ago to a minsal deal. Always injured and never won a starting job.
2 28 59 Marques Tuiasosopo QB Washington - Gruden's guy. Still with the team. Two career starts and a 52.2 qb rating. Clipboard holder.
3 27 89 DeLawrence Grant DE Oregon State - still with the team. Always a backup or injured, moved to OLB (not very successfully) and supposedly moving back to DE as a backup.
5 27 158 Raymond Perryman DB Northern Arizona - cut after one year, never made anything of himself.
6 21 184 Chris Cooper DE Nebraska-Omaha - three years with the Raiders, got some starts in 2003, then went to the 49ers as backup.
7 28 228 Derek Combs RB Ohio State - nobody.
7 29 229 Ken-Yon Rambo WR Ohio State - cool name.
Basically a fragile group of backups.

6c Otis Leverette (187) DE Alabama-Birmingham- Who cares
6d Rick Crowell (188) LB Colorado State- Who cares

Wow, after looking at these so far, all I can say is how crappy many if not most of the teams drafted. With some exceptions, it really shows what a crap shoot the draft is.
And I have to say the Bengals draft was awesome and clearly the winner. The Pats hit big on their first 2 picks, but nothing after that. However, after seeing how other teams fared, that has to be considered a great success.

I dunno, in terms of the quality of the players and the value relative to the pick, I think the Seahawks draft is right there with the Bengals.

Carter was taken in the 2nd round so the Cowboys could lock him into a 5 year contract, whereas if he had been taken in the 3-4th he would have only gotten a 3 year deal at most I believe. Of course it's pretty apparent that the Cowboys did reach, after the fact

Maurice Williams is a longtime starter at OT too. Plus, remember that Coughlin got a lot of flack for taking Stroud, people said he was taken several picks too early and said that Jax should have taken an OT (Kenyatta Walker). Instead, Williams became a long term starter and Stroud became one of the best DTs in the league, once again showing that Coughlin is a good personnel guy.
