Bottom of the ninth, just three outs from an 11th straight loss, the TV broadcast reveals their "play of the day." What might it have been?

Unveiling the naming of the press box after former Kansas City Star editor Joe McGuff.

Now granted, McGuff is a legened around here. He's in the writer's wing of the Hall of Fame and he was just announced as the Red Smith winner this year. The naming of the press box is a tremendous honor, although the cynic in me suggests it would have been a nice gesture to do it before he passed away last year. He had been sick for a few years, so his death wasn't a surprise.

But when the naming of the press box is your "play of the day," how bad is your season going?

It looks like the Royals proposals went well, but the rolling "dome" for Arrowhead stadium looks to be going to be re-voted on. The Royals have a great layout on what it could look like over at their site.

I just hope the Chiefs get their share as well.

FYI....the 200-some million that was passed was for both Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead. Both will be receiving over 100 million for renovations to their stadiums. The rolling roof was a separate ballot issue and will most likely come up on the ballots again in the fall.

What's it going to take to get the Royals back to respectability? New ownership? A decade of good drafts? Trades? what?

The ballot issue that was just passed was for about $600 million, with around $325 going to Arrowhead and $275 going to Kauffman. The $225 million rolling roof will be back. There were some claims that the total cost of the renovations with the roof would end up being about $875 million. Unreal.

Step one in the Royals rebuilding process will take place soon -- maybe before the end of the month. The firing of Allan Baird as general manager is a foregone conclusion at this point -- based on what David Glass has said publicly, I think there's a chance he could be fired after every loss.

Step two will be Baird's replacement. Here's hoping Glass takes some of that money's he's been saving and goes out and lures an experienced baseball guy here. Baird is a fine director of scouting -- maybe -- but it's always been clear to me that he was never GM material.

Step three will be the canning of Buddy Bell. What a disastrous hire that was. Two-time losers don't often suddenly become winners. Considering who we could have gotten when Baird hired Pena and Bell, those were horrific hires. The new GM should be able to get his own guy. Bell might last the season, but right now I wouldn't bet on it.

Step four will be rebuilding. It will take some good drafts -- I'd take decent drafts at this point. It will take some better spending of money. When you're a $50 million payroll team, you can't tie 20+ percent of your payroll in a guy like Mike Sweeney, who is really nothing more than an above-average DH.
