View Full Version : West Coast Boot Camp
I'm watching the Mets, Padres game and they show a bunch of Marines sitting in top level of RF. I remember last night the Padres were wearing their camo uniforms and celebrating some type of military day, so I think nothing of it. A litte later they show the Marines again and I see drill instructors yelling at them and making them do that sit, stand up bullshit. I then remembered a Marine telling me back in New River how he went to a Padres game when he was in boot camp but i thought he was full of shit. Guess he wasn't. What kind of shit is that? The most relaxing time I had in boot camp was going to church for maybe an hour, and im not even religous.

We always have a promotion for the military when it comes to sporting events, be it baseball or football. Been like that for awhile over here.

Just to be clear, though I'm sure Ardent could talk about this far more knoweldgably then I, but the only Naval "boot camp" is at Great Lakes outside of Chicago. There are other, specialty schools, however, which are across the country.

My first day of boot camp was spent at a St. Louis Cardinal game at (*sigh*) the old Busch stadium. I was sworn in on the field before the game along with the rest of my recruit division. We watched the game from the stands and left very early the next morning for Great Lakes...so that part is certainly possible.
As for the Padres, as huk mentioned, the Pads have worn camo on some sort of Military Appreciation Day. In 2002, I was on the field during the flag ceremony, and eventually got a few seconds of fame on ESPN and Sportscenter. If you missed it, I was the sailor kicked back in my seat while my buddies were all leaned up and paying attention. Yeah, I know, you missed it.
The Pads wore camo that day. I received a Phil Nevin camo Pads hat as part of their promotion. I wore it the next day on the USS Nimitz, which didn't go over too well.
Finally, the only Navy boot camp is in Great Lakes. Old camps in San Diego and Orlando have been closed for about 10 years now...if not longer.

In Air Force basic we got to go to two hockey games. (The only AF Basic is in San Antonio)
Minor League hockey and all, but still. I've heard that some had gone to Spurs games before, so...it happens to us too.
It was during the last week of training though, if I recall.

The only thing we attended during Army Basic Training was the nightly buffer races around the day room.
I went to Marine boot camp in Paradise Island on the East Coast. We weren't offered anything at all, that's why I found is so surprising. I feel like i've been jipped, shoulda went to the west coast.
