I've been following a William and Mary grad who is having a stellar year so far in his first significant time in the majors (Chris Ray - http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/team/player.jsp?player_id=444884 Closer for the Orioles). I'm pretty sure I've seen in the past where if you spend SOME time in the majors, but not much, that you can be considered a rookie the following year.

So my question is, how do those rules work? It looks like Ray pitched 49 innings in 50 games last year.

Depends on the amount of games you play.

I forget the # but I think its around 1/3rd of the year

100 career ABs or less. I do not know about pitchers. 49 innings and 50 games seems like a lot though.

What about Pitchers?

130 MLB AB or 50 MLB IP, or has accumulated 45 days on an MLB roster prior to September 1st of any season.

Ray must have just missed.

Edit: Here's another good page for transaction questions (opions, rule 5, etc.) that come up a lot.

Ray had 49 innings, so I wonder how long he was on the roster...

I'm not sure what you mean by "just missed it".. cause I'm partially hoping he is a rookie this year as I imagine he would have a ROY shot if he keeps up his current performance.

Well 50 games, less no more than 20 in Sept. means he had 30 games before Sept. 1st.

Almost surely had >45 days before 9/1/05.

Just missed still being a rookie. If you figure a full season reliever gets around 70 innings, it'd be hard for Ray to be under the days requirements since he pitched around half of last season in the majors.

I fail at writing, BTW ;)

Ray spent from June 12 to August 8 on the major league roster and from August 23 on. The only Orioles hurlers with current rookie eligibility are Rheal and Britton.

Thanks for the help guys!

Still enjoying seeing him do so well though ;)... and Harris got called up for the Nats and is playing very well too.
