Jim McIngvale, owner of Gallery Furniture, did.

Page C2 and C3 of today's Houston Chronicle.

I doubt 2 full page ads in the Houston Chronicle cost $50k.

Maybe that's what I should do with the money I'll be getting tomorrow...place an ad in the Lexington papers imploring UK to do something about its crappy football team.

Not if purchased separately in separate locations of the paper.

But a two-page spread like that in color costs over $50K for people without a volume discount.

I've heard everywhere from $40K to $75K on what Mac paid for it.

even though it's not a traditional ad per se, don't be fooled. that "Gallery Furniture" stripe at the bottom is advertising, and probably worth the 50 grand (if not more). It may not be intended as a marketing scheme, but it will certainly work in getting press/pr/brand recognition/whatever for the store.

I agree that it will likely generate television/radio/newspaper mentions of the ad and as such could definietely be written off and be worth far more then 50k in free publicity.

The thing about Mattress Mac is that if you told him this exact situation you might actually get a donation. Of course, your friend would have to live with being exploited by being in Gallery Furniture commercials.

Im thinking of writing/calling the Gates Foundation. I know they will randomly give out money, even if it doesnt fit the normal guidelines. I take some comfort in the fact that this is America and I find it pretty implausible that she just flat cant get her operation if she doesnt come up with all the cash.

She just had a $10 a plate fundraiser down in LA and sold a bunch of her art too. Still, the idea of just giving her $10 bucks hurts me. I wish i was rich.

This is her..

if we happen to have any closest millionaires out there. Shes one of the most intelligent, talented, funny and all around beautiful girls ive ever known. losing her would be a huge tragedy.

Exactly. The free publicity from this to the point where a message board with a national following now knows who Gallery Furniture is- that's why he did it.
