View Full Version : I'm a bad, bad man...

...at least, according to my wife. Apparently, I've been keeping things from her - things that she, as an equal partner in this relationship, has a right to know about.

- I ordered FM Handheld for the PSP because, well, I had to - not available in stores here in Texas, right? So I let my wife know to be on the lookout for a package.

"A package? What did you buy?"
"Oh, some video game. Stores in town didn't have it."
"And how much did you spend on this video game?"
<shrug> "It was about thirty, maybe thirty-five with shipping."

In my defense, she never actually ASKED whether that was in dollars or British pounds sterling. And I never ASKED her to examine our credit card statement this morning to see what that ~75 charge from the UK was. However, I apparently am rich enough to spend that much on a video game...and to take her out for a nice dinner at a restaurant of her choosing.

-After returning from said dinner, I sit down to watch the Tivo'd NFL draft. My beautiful wife sits down with me, and watches with me, and asks various questions about the players and teams. It's early in the second (I think), and one of the talking heads mentions of a LB prospect, "He'll be able to play either the Sam or the Will." Oops. My wife turns to me, face glowering, and clears her throat. "Why, exactly, did that guy on the screen just mention our dogs by name?"

Now, in my defense, she actually came up with the name "Sam" when we got our first yellow Lab about 18 months ago. And when the big guy got lonely and we had the chance to adopt his brother (from a couple litters later), I thought that "Will" was a reasonable choice as well. And if she wants to think that I'm a sensitive soul that wanted to name our dogs after Will Shakespeare and the faithful companion in LotR, well, that's just coincidence, right?

Right?

So anyway, it's the couch again. ;)

You've been drinking.

Or if you haven't, you should be.

I don't get it. She got mad cause the person on tv said Sam or Will? If she did how the hell can you stand it?

My exact thoughts every time I hear a story like this...

I'm not exactly sure why she would *glower* at you. Maybe she felt forced to sit through it and wanted to express her anger by asking a foolish question?

I think the translation was: "You didn't name our dogs after positions on a football team, *did* you?"

A few months ago, I let it slip (while talking to one of my friends that was visiting) that I named one of our cats after Sparky Anderson. My wife wasn't pleased.

So much more bullshit...

Would she have gotten mad if you had named him after a character in your favorite novel or poem? I don't know the details in your situation. But I'm always hearing silly shit like this from my friends.

I don't understand why it is that the things that the man in the relationship finds valuable are so stupid that their female partners find them insulting...

Radii's cat is named Dean, after Dean Smith - and I could care less. When we got our dog and I named him Leo, after the angel on Charmed, radii rolled his eyes and might have laughed at me a little, but he certainly didn't care. That is a stupid thing to be upset about if you ask me...sounds like she was just trying to pick a fight.

Edit...I need to add that you were definitely wrong about fudging the price of the game. As long as that credit card is a joint card and is paid from a joint account, you basically lied to her and she had every right to be mad.

You missed a golden opportunity to deny that that's what he said. Claim that there's no reason for the announcer to talk about your dogs, and that she's either hearing things or losing her mind. Then, since you had it Tivo'd, rewind it to prove it, and then say "See? You're crazy!"

Any chance to make a women question her sanity should not be missed.

This is where I was going. No better reason to get a puppy. Right?

I let the kids name the pets. We have a cat named Hermione, a ferret named Padme, and another cat named Magneto.

I'll reserve veto power if we ever get another puppy... but, honestly, I think it's more fun to let the kids have at it.

I think you are sorely mislead about your cat's name. He named after the legend Dean Houston. I remember the headlines, because it cost radii like 79 cents and a cup of coffe from 7-11

Just to clarify, my wife wasn't "I had to sleep on the couch mad", she was just moderately displeased because I didn't tell her that was why I was naming the cat Sparky (in which case, she probably would have wanted to name him something else.)

my wife would probably have recommended a hockey or football name for a pet.

I want to get a dog and name him Claude Lemieux. Maybe he can beat the fuck out of my wife's evil cat.

(I'm kidding -- mostly)

It probably wouldn't work that way - my cats regularly beat the snot out of my dog.

I pulled the pet name thing on our current dog. We called him Casanova, Nova for short.

Of course, we then watched the first American Pie movie and she realized why I picked that name. However, she wasn't upset, just amused.

Sam, Mike, and Will could be a great 2nd level defense for the house.

Actually, This story would be better if it were about his kids' names.
