View Full Version : What is the thing you hate most about your job?
Flasch186

I was thinking about that and came to the conclusion that I hate the fact that when the shit hits the fan it is usually the day of closing and sometimes a person cannot move into their home that they thought they were going to. I hate that they call me and ask me what they should do and I dont know what to tell them. That I think is the worst part, that its supposed to be the best day for them and sometimes, rarely I should say, they lose out entirely.
What is yours?

Tedium. I'm an analyst, so I spend most of my week updating forecasts on the same 20-25 spreadsheets with intermittent projects. Pays pretty well though. And four weeks vacation is nice.

See: Stress.
The worse part is when you get an error and you have absolutely no idea what it mean, what it relates to and where to start looking for solutions. It's not so much that I don't know what it means but that it would take me too much time in solving it. I almost had one of those today when I got an ORA-09048 error on a failed trigger in the table. Luckily I work with the schema dba and found it had a typo in the trigger function.

The idiots:
My idiotic co-workers who do nothing but play on the internet and fuck things up all day long then ask for help on how to fix it, then get praise from everyone else for "working so hard" when all they're doing is working in circles. If I don't help them the problem just festers until I'm made to fix it, which takes 10 times longer than just fixing it right away. And the ones who can't tell a computer mouse from an indoor fern ... ugh.
My idiotic boss who can do no wrong, yet constantly fucks up and talks his way out of jams, and somehow has managed to portray himself as the second coming of Jesus to his bosses. Despite letting huge problems slip through the ... gaping holes he's created ... his bosses are convinced he is perfect, and are more than happy to provide him with all the tools he needs to keep diging himself in deeper.
Equipment. Something breaks down every day. Every day. And I have to fix it.

Not meaning to be cocky - but there isn't really anything I 'hate' about my job - there are parts which I'd prefer not to happen (mainly longer hours around releases, but this is something we've been improving upon year in year out and hopefully it won't be for more than a few days this year) but by and by I love my job ...

That every time that a server fails putting all my websites offline is at night when i'm sleeping or just when i'm away on holidays without internet access. It has made me really paranoid, the first thing i do when i wake up, even before dressing or cleaning my face is to check the servers while my wife waits impatiently with the breakfast getting cold over the table.
I hate also the time differences as i work mainly with USA guys and they are sleeping when i wake up and they love to talk business when it's my time to go to to bed, forcing me to go to bed really late. That is probably what my wife hates the most about my job too.

I've noticed this is amazingly common with practically every area of IT - we've an IT chap at SI who looks after our internal infrastructure, its always 100% smooth with no problems at all until he takes a day off when it always seems that all heck breaks loose ...

Tough call...
People who blame the Union for all the problems at their work place when they haven't attended a Union meeting in ten years (if you want something tell us, don't wait until you don't get it and then bitch about it).
People who don't pay Union Dues, but the moment they get fired or written up call me (the Union's attorney) rather than their Union Rep demanding I get their job back for them.
Company management, of a specific company that I won't name, that just gave their CEO a multi-million dollar pay raise in the middle of our negotiations for a new contract where they have been claiming they can't give raises to workers who haven't seen a raise in 5 years (and this is a very profitable company). It puts me in a tough spot trying to broker a deal between the membership (who believes they deserve a huge raise) and management (who refuse to give raises to anyone not in management).
Managers who fire sick people, just because they are sick.
Managers that sleep with their employees.
Managers (who are in our bargaining unit) that want me to get them their job back when they are fired for sleeping with their employees.
The things I enjoy about this job? The other 98% that I get to deal with on an everyday basis--including those labor relations people at some corporations who do the right thing even when it isn't the most profitable thing to do.
I love my job, but I have to go with what someone said earlier. No hot chicks. I'm a software engineer and surrounded by men...good bunch of guys though.

In a word, the people.
The people in management, who don't really deserve to be there, but have been around 15-20 years, so what the hell, we'll promote you.
The managers that don't really care, as long as they can look good to their superior, so on and so on.
The managers who might care, but are afraid of making waves with the managers mentioned above.
The co-workers who have 101 excuses for special attention, special needs, or special treatment.
The co-workers who can't think on their own, no matter how long they've been here.
The co-workers who are smarter, more talented, better qualified than the rest of us...yet can not ever produce anything valuable.

(Teaching) I really enjoy the 90% of my time which is spent interacting with middle school kids. I dread the 5% of my time spent dealing with parents and higher ups. I depise the 5% of my time spent with my peers. The phrase "Those who can't teach" pisses me off to no end, but also describes about 50-75% of my coworkers. (Including almost every one that I work with on a close basis.)

1. Politics at work.
2. The fact my opinion means nothing because there is someone more senior than me (and I have been here 11 years) that always disagrees with me.
3. I cannot find a job doing strictly programming in my area and my boss doesn't listen to me when I tell him that is what I want to do.

Just had my reviews today. So this is perfect timing. I was given great reviews by four people who I worked with. My work was great and got a long with everyone, yadda, yadda, yadda. But then they complained that my utilization was not high enough. Well that is not my fault, I always let the scheduler know when I am not working on a project, I seek out others who may have work for me. I can't do anything about not being assigned to a proejct or having slow moving project which impacts my utilization. Ugh!!!!!!!!

I actually don't "hate" anything about my job. They seem to like me, and I keep asking them for more work to do, so they like that, too...
But, this happened today and is something that drives me bonkers when they ask, so I'll add it to the list.
For those who don't know, I'm the lead harness design engineer on 2 satellites that my company is making. I am also doing support to design efforts on 4 other satellites. A harness is the "guts" of the satellite...it's the wires that make the satellite work, all the interconnections between all the boxes, etc etc. A typical satellite has between 20k and 30k wires.
So, I was in the office of our finance person today. One of the people who works under the charge accounts I manage accidentally charged the wrong account. I have 12 accounts, he should have charged to account 5 but charged accidentally to account 6, and the electronic timesheet was already signed off by his supervisor, so he couldn't change it. So, I'm sitting there in the finance admin's office, trying to get all the paperwork in place to fix this problem and the chief engineer on the project comes in.
He sticks a document in my face and wants to know if a particular table showing 37 of the 20k connections in the design is correct. Right off the top of my head, I have no idea what the document is, what connector it's talking about, what BOX the connector is on...
Finally the chief engineer says, "Oh, this is such and such document, do you know if this is correct?" I admit, I'm good, but even I'm not good enough to know if a certain 0.185% of a harness is correct just by looking at it without my computer near me, ESPECIALLY while I'm a meeting with finance to get other things straightened out.
Talk about driving me more bonkers than usual!
