The Kennedy dynasty was engulfed in fresh controversy yesterday after Congressman Patrick Kennedy crashed his car in Washington while pursued by police.
Lou Cannon, the head of a police trade union, has alleged that Mr Kennedy, 38, the son of Senator Ted Kennedy and nephew of President John F Kennedy, "appeared to be intoxicated" after the incident.
Mr Cannon said the congressman had not been tested for alcohol, at the scene or later. An officer "above the rank of patrolman" ordered officers to take Mr Kennedy home.
Mr Kennedy later said: "I consumed no alcohol prior to this incident." He explained that he had been taking two prescription drugs for sleeping disorders and that they might have been to blame.
Are prescription drugs the new way to get sympathy if you're a public figure after messing up or is it just a way to get your high without messing with street dealers?
