NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) -- The talking car K.I.T.T. is heading to the big screen in an adaptation of the hit 1980s TV series "Knight Rider."

Series creator Glen A. Larson will write and executive produce the Weinstein Co. project, which he anticipates will begin production next year. The project had previously been in development at Sony-based Revolution Studios.

Larson has bandied about the project for years. "A number of people wanted to do a pure comedic send-up of it, but I always felt that would throw away the franchise," he said. "There was always some humor on the show, but this film will probably have more gallows, foxhole humor.

Despite the darker tone, he said he would aim for a PG-13 rating because he doesn't want to exclude the series' core audience. The show ran on NBC from 1982-86.

The story centers on the tale of a police investigator shot in the line of duty who is nursed back to health by a mysterious millionaire. He's given a new name (Michael Knight), a new face and a new car to help him continue his work. As in the pilot, he also seeks revenge on the criminals who left him for dead.

Larson wouldn't say whether David Hasselhoff, who starred in the series, would appear in a cameo or if William Daniels would reprise his role as the voice of K.I.T.T.

And they wonder why ticket sales have been less than spectacular. Have the majority of movie producers just given up even trying to make anything worthwhile to see. I don't know if it is just me but, I have almost no desire to see any movie that is a remake of a TV show. I think the only exception to that for me, that I can remember, was 'The Fugitive'. (I don't consider movies like Star Trek or Serenity to be 'remakes' as they are more extensions of the TV shows)

Movies from TV shows are safe. You can generally expect a modest profit since nostalgia will bring in enough people to cover your costs, and it inspires people to check out the DVDs of the TV series. Studios seem happy to go with steady safe small money rather than taking the chance on a big win which may turn into a big loss.

Not enough shots are taken on small risks that can turn out to be big gains. Dramas are relatively cheap to produce, and can turn into pretty sizable money-makers if they hit big.

I agree. I can't imagine even much nostalgia business is possible if the movie isn't shown the same respect that the series was. I'm already bracing myself to be thoroughly annoyed at Will Farrel in the Land of the Lost movie.

Like the old saying goes...'follow the money.' Who benefits from crappy movies going almost immediately to DVD? Obviously those who make the DVD's. Guess they figure to saturate the market and make a quick killing, then let the next-in-line suckers figure out how to keep the movie industry alive. All seems to be going according to plan, too.

Biggest surprise for them is they probably didn't figure the public to be so hardup for crappy movies that those in on the scheme would be riding the gravy-train for so long.

You wonder why Quentin Terrintino has his hand in everything being made these days? He's the only one in Hollywood with something resembling a pulse.

I can agree on the solid writing. I would prefer to have relatively unknown actors instead of big names. A big name is already associated wth other roles. That makes it that much harder for them to portray a role that has been an icon in television history.

Throughout the course of human history, great minds have attempted to tackle such questions. Minds of men like Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates. Minds of men like Sartre, Nietzsche, and Freud. While few have had the courage to address the implications of these central existential dilemmas, even fewer have been able to offer any worthwhile insight on such matters, or do any more than merely scratch the surface with repetitive supposition and conjecture.

How rare it is when a work of art can at once synthesize, and then surpass the work of all that has come before it.

"Small Wonder" is just such an achievement.

If the Sistine Chapel were a sitcom, it would be "Small Wonder". If William Shakespeare had been writing sitcoms in the 1980s, he would have written "Small Wonder". If Leonardo da Vinci were alive today he would have painted the Mona Lisa with a pony tail and a red and white dress, and simply called his subject 'Vicki'.

The husband, the father, the inventor. All one man. Ted Lawson. In his workshop he creates a robot daughter who sleeps in his son's closet. Rather than cash in on his invention, which could have totally revolutionized the communications industry, the Lawsons vow to keep Vicki a secret, for some reason.

That one suburban schlub of a man can create life --does create life, in his basement, signifies, validates the presence of the divine in the banal. Man is divine, as he is created in God's image. Yet man can create man. Therefore...

Mrs. Poole, the neighbor, or was it Mrs. Brindle? I'm getting my shows confused I think. Anyway, Mrs. Brindle the neighbor who sits by idly, and had born of her womb a daughter with fiery red hair and marks of the devil all about her skin. Is Harriet Satan? Is Vicki Christ?

A theological treatment of "Small Wonder", in itself, would likely fill multiple volumes. I'm surprised more hasn't been written about the show.

In addition to such a captivating and intellectually challenging premise, the show also featured some of the most remarkable special effects ever to be put on film. Before or since. When Vicki would lift the couch, for instance, it was almost impossible to see the thick blue line around the couch's edges. Special effects which later influenced the likes of "Jurassic Park" and "Independence Day", no doubt.

I could go on and on about this show, but I won't. If you haven't seen every episode at least five times, consider yourself incomplete. I would be both enticed and excited by the proposal of opening up a school, (an Academy, if you will) where the curriculum consisted solely of screenings and discussions of episodes of "Small Wonder".

Plot Synopsis:
Traveling across the country in an RV, teen ager Billy Batson and his adult companion, Mentor, would encounter various situations that would require their help. Whenever their help was needed, a flashing light on the dashboard of the RV would start beeping and blinking (Holy Batphone!) and would summon the elders (Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury), who would give him some cryptic advice needed for the emerging situation. By yelling the word, "Shazam" (the word is an anacronym for all of the elders' names), Billy would turn into Captain Marvel, an adult hero with the power of flight, super speed, and super strength. As Captain Marvel, he would use his powers to capture criminals, save those in distress, and right any other wrongs that came up.

Segal to Helm Shazam! Movie
According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema has tapped Peter Segal (The Longest Yard)to direct Shazam! based on the DC Comics' comic book series.

Segal will direct and produce the film. There's no word yet on who will star in the lead role of Billy Batson, the young man who becomes Captain Marvel whenever he says Shazam!
