View Full Version : Ready to get back into EHM 2005

I know we have some big threads about Eastside Hockey Manager, but they haven't been touched in a few weeks. Rather than have people trudge through those, I'm starting something new. :)

I haven't played EHM 2005 in a few weeks, but the NHL playoffs have me ready to start over. I have no problem with getting the latest patch, but I'm looking for suggestions regarding add-ons. I mean facepacks, roster updates, and unfaking files. Can somebody recommend the right files to download to make sure that I can start a new career and not think about having to update again? I don't really need the latest roster moves, so if there's nothing post-trade deadline, that's fine. I'd just like to see what's available out there.

Thanks!

I recommend Minstrel's Metal Skin; you can choose from among the 30 NHL teams.

If you want to see NCAA prospects (among other real names I can't remember) you'll need the 'unfaking' database. I can't remember you created/provided it.

Best game i've played in a while. Had a few issues with the NHL with it being to easy to get good players and the QMJHL draft not working. Really enjoying playing in the WHL though.

I had just started a new EHM career with the Kings. Words can not describe how much I hate Valeri Bure.

Just in case you need it, here is my biggest wish, I've noticed you don't really talk about what will or will not be in the new game so I'd like it if you told me it was tweaked:

Better player development curves; regens become stars at 18 which makes it quite dull playing after 2010. Otherwise, the game is unbelievable and I don't know how I'll be able to wait for 2007!

One of the first things I did for the 2007 version way back last year, was to rewrite some of the technical attribute system as well as the player development system. So far I'm very pleased with the way it seems to have moved on. You still get a lot of the top scorers being former 1st round picks but they certainly need a few seasons to get going in the big league. And for example I've seen an undrafted european goalie who played major junior become the No.1 goalie for the Ducks, almost a point per game 5th round pick and some other more than decent late round gems just to name a few examples.

Nope, I'm at home in Helsinki writing code. There would have been very little to show at E3 with EHM at this point this year, given that the global release is now at the start of the hockey season.

We're negotiating all licenses at the moment. This includes trying to obtain new ones.

I prefer EHM 2005 so much to the first non-freeware EHM. If 2007 can make anywhere near that kind of level of improvement, I may have to abandon playing any other sim. :-)

Yeah, no kidding. :) Sadly, all the talk of EHM 2007 has kinda soured me on starting with EHM 2005 again. I know the new version is still a few months away, but reading about things like regens being too good too soon has me thinking that maybe I shouldn't even bother now. Anyway, at this point, maybe I'll play and maybe I won't. I'm just not so "gung ho" about it anymore.

Try an OHL or WHL team. Much more challenging than the NHL because of the regens and easy way to lock up players cheaply long term. Don't try the QMJHL as there is a draft bug where the order is not calculated properly. Very frustrating to have the worst team in the league and get the #13 pick, ugh :).

Will we be able to cnvert our careers to EHM:2007 or start over again?

You'll have to start over. Too many changes to the database structure alone to make conversion feasible.

Just an update on the player development/scouting/draft improvements that I just posted on the SI forums as well...thought you guys would like to read as well:

Update from the soak test today...I just typed the whole damn top 20 scorers and their draft positions but lost it all, so I'll just recap:

From the top 20 scorers in 2018/2019 season:
-Average draft position: 37th overall
-1 sixth round pick
-1 seventh round pick
-1 third round pick
-2 second round picks
-15 first round picks

Naturally, the first 10-15 seasons are a bit twisted because of the last few real drafts and how those players are entered into the database. Since no-one can accurately say how the last few first rounds will turn out in the long run, I'd say most of them are rated as a lot safer picks in the DB than they might turn out in real life later on. Which means players from about the last 3 drafts might have not that many busts in the top rounds as such. Which would mean more of the "variable potential" values needs to be used in the DB for these players.

However, going further into the game, with the drafts being more driven by the improved regen and scouting systems, there are less sure fire first rounders and more late round gems. Looking at the 2011 draft for example, I can take the following examples:

1st overall pick: Esa Karhunen, RW, FIN, drafted by Oilers. Straight into NHL after being drafted after a good season with Turku in the Finnish league (17+23 in 54 games). Rookie season, 82 games with Oilers, 27 points. Sophmore season, 44 games in the NHL (15 pts) then traded to Montreal where sent to AHL for 39 games (36 pts). Third season up with MTL, 76 games and 22 points, then fourth season 82 games and 19 points and a career best NHL/AHL +/- of -9. Moved back to Europe after that and playing there since, being a decent but not that great player. So a quite a bust really. NHL totals 284 games 27+56 for 83 points.

2nd overall: Zack Foster, RW, CAN, drafted by Bruins. Straight to NHL after getting better every season in the OHL (129 pts in the last season), rookie season 72 games and 46 points. Sophmore season 82 games, 66 points, a stint of 6 games in the AHL as well, 6 pts. Then two slower seasons with 45 and 42 points, before signing with the Leafs and exploding into 106 points in his second season there. Career NHL totals so far: 573 games, 182+295 for 477 points.

3rd overall: Danny Needham, LW, CAN, drafted by Detroit. Split rookie season between NHL and AHL, 36 games and 6 points in NHL, 44 games and 60 points in the AHL. Second season AHL 78 games 82 points. Never made the jump into the next level and moved to Europe and has played in Germany since, being a big star for his team there. NHL totals 36 games, 3+3 for 6 points.

Other established players from the draft (good players from the top rounds and players from the later rounds who have made nice careers):
Rob Bertone, 17th overall. 430 points in 469 games so far (C)
Jaromir Cech, 20th overall. 266 points in 381 games (RW) - came over only after playing 3 more seasons in Czech after being drafted
Doc Carroll, 24th overall. 410 pts in 488 games (D)
Stephen Potter, 38th overall, 488 points in 482 games (LW) - best player from this draft was picked in the 2nd round
Lukas Hluchy, 129th overall, 68 points in 460 games (D)
Reade Wheeler, 148th overall, 69 points in 444 games (RW)
Adam Plihal, 186th overall, 461 points in 561 games (RW) - never got a chance to play top lines with Canucks who drafted him in the 7th round, exploded into a point per game player after being traded to Oilers in his 4th season
Carsen Ouelette, 206th overall, 58 points in 360 games (LW) - goon

Looks good Riz...I am really pumped up for this release. Something tells me this release of EHM is gonna be "it". The first release was good, as I think everyone was excited just to get a "hockey sim". The second was much better with new leagues, being able to watch games, etc. but it just seemed a little chaotic with the sallary cap unknowns, new rules, increase in scoring . Plus I really need this version to be great so I can quit playing that stupid Soccer game every freakin night. ;)

Lots of things still left to code, not to mention test, tweak, test and tweak again. So no, it's not out yet :)

Edit: Forgot to mention that I looked at the goalies in that 2018/19 season and the draft positions of the top goalies were even lower on the average than skaters. Heck, altleast the Leafs had an undrafted backup on the roster and someone else had a 7th rounder as their starter...he wasn't much of a starter, but still :)

If I understand it, the plan is to have the game available sometime in September/October to coencide with the start of the 06-07 NHL regular season.

well the tweaks will help me out i am always up against the salary cap, it is not unheard of for me to have several undrafted players on the team making league min (i try to keep it to 4th line or injury replacement guys though)

Riz that was an amazing report, I never expected that much! I just can't wait...

But if it's not too much, I still have a small question. How fast did the late round picks developpe before making it to the NHL? Because with this new amazing draft/scouting system, it would kinda be a downside if late round gems would all immediately developpe into NHL players or if they would all quickly look like steals even after just being drafted in the late rounds.

Still, this looks too good to be true!

EDIT: Damn, I just did a long edit to my post to give you an exemple of late round players in 1993 and in 1999 (random years), but instead of clicking on Save I clicked on Post Reply and it just disappeared. Anyway, the result was that those players played in average two years before joining the NHL. College players also seemed to finish their college career before joining the big league while most euros played in the AHL or Major Junior before joining the big leagues.

lol I was just kidding about if it was out yet. I'm just very excited for the new version. I really liked the 2005 version but the tweaks you are making sounds like it will make it the perfect hockey sim. Thanks!
