What kind of person are you?

My friend has a theory that there are only two types of employed people - which type are you?

Type 1 works to fund his/her life. Type 2 identifies himself with his job - his job is his life.

I'm the "my job funds my life" type of person. Don't get my wrong, I'm not miserable at work, but I would probably pick another career at this point if the money was the same.

I used to be Type 2. You can miss a lot of things that way. And also, you tend to take a lot of things in your personal life for granted.

Perhaps oddly (or not), I think being a "2" was less stressful than being a "1".

Right now I'm a #1, but I hope I eventually do get paid for something that I would consider a part of my life....maybe music (highly doubtful), journalism (highly possible), or maybe something that actually helps people and makes a difference.

I picked 2. But really that's only because my lifestyle is cheap and I've surpassed the amount of income it takes to keep me happy, while at the same time my hobby is the same as my job .

A little bit of both. I really like my job, and I'm doing what I'm good at, and what I've always wanted... but it doesn't really mean that there isn't a whole lot else in my life that my job helps pay for.

My family is my life, first and foremost.

I'm probably impossible to rate on that poll - I've a job which I love and which would in other circumstances be my hobby .... as such yeah I work waaay too many hours by normal standards (minimum 40 a week I'd guess, maxing out between 80-100 around release) .... BUT I'd rate my family as the mot important thing in my life and I'm lucky enough that (outside of release deadlines) my work is flexible enough to structure around them so I don't miss things ...

(so in essence is it ok to tick both ;) )

I chose option #1.

Growing up over the last 13 years (from 18 to 31), my job (Firefighter) was my life. I'm married to a great woman, three beautiful kids, own my home, etc....but still my identity was tied to my profession.

Recently (within the last couple of years), I've really changed to the fact that I know my job isn't who I am...it's just what I do. I'll always love my job and can't picture doing anything else....but I finally realized over the past few years what is really important.

With age comes wisdom I guess....but I know what is imporant after all these years. My job is a very small part of that.

(Yes, my wife views these boards....so I'm not saying anything she doesn't already know ;) )

I like my current job better than any other job I've had. It too was a hobby of mine that I now get paid for. I work because I have to so that's type one but I'm doing the same things I do when I'm not working pretty much but learning a lot more than when I did it solely as a hobby. That sounds like type 2. So maybe I'm a three.

I don't take my "work" home with me though. I don't dwell on what happened or anything. I do figure we spend roughly a quarter of our lives at work so it sure as hell pays to enjoy it. I've always gravitated to jobs I enjoy and leave those I don't rather quickly.

I am kind of like Hawk4669, I love my job but I try to keep in mind that it is just what i do, not who I am. Lots of people in my line of work love the job and identify with it at an unhealthy level. Probably averages more than 1 divorce per co-worker.

My old job was a definite number 1, and I can't imagine going back even though the money was pretty sweet.

I went with choice 2 for 2 reasons:

1.) I'm currently employed in the field I've wanted to be in since high school, I tend to enjoy it much more often than not, and I'm (relatively speaking) fairly good at it. I'm also thisclose to landing a different job even more up my alley, so I'm pretty focused on that right now.

2.) I don't have a wife or kids at this point, so, strictly speaking, my job is the "most important" thing right now, even thought I'm not obsessed/a slave to it.

Ditto - when you care about something although you work harder, it doesn;t seem as stressful. When you don't particularly give a rat's ass, it's harder to put in the required effort, and it is easier to get stressed about the work.

I'd probably say somewhere in between. Clearly, I'm in my chosen profession and won't be leaving it until I retire (unless something completely out of the blue happens in the next 30 years), but I have enough perspective to not let my job be my life. It certainly defines who I am to an extent, but I'm not willing to sacrifice my life outside the job (especially when it comes to family) for the job. Here and there, yes; on a consistent basis, no.

My response is identical to this. Just to clarify, you dont have to bring in tons of cash if you live within your means. Ive always kept my financial obligations/bills to a minimum. Things like not having credit card debt or a car payment save thousands of dollars annually. Not so much a cheap lifestyle as not living lavishly.


My hobby became my job and I work 330-340 days a year. Infact, in June Im taking a 'vacation' and wont work for six consecutive days which will be the longest stretch since 1999.

I enjoy my job immensely. I take my job seriously. I can't think of any other realistic job that I would rather have (I'd love to be a pro athlete, but that is unrealistic with my level of athletic ability.) However, I don't take my work home. My wife is the most important person in my life, and my kids once we have them are going to be more important than my job. I enjoy my job, but if I'm being honest with myself the #1 reason I work is to provide for my family and then for my hobbies. Therefore, I picked #1.

Right now I'm a 1. Yes, working at Victoria's Secret has been my favourite job so far and yes I adore my coworkers and the management is the best I've ever worked with, but I hate retail and I hate dealing with the general public.

This will be the last summer I work at Victoria's Secret. I'll probably pick up a second part-time job this summer because VS doesn't pay enough or give me enough hours to make my rent during the year and then look for a full-time job the summer following.

I am a teacher, and like Axxon said above, I knew all along that I would be spending at least 30 years in my career and I better find something I enjoy. I do work with a lot of solid #1 people and can't understand why they are in this particular profession with the lower pay and thier level of unhappiness at work. I can't imagine teaching if I couldn't stand working with kids. :confused:

However a very close teacher of friend of mine was recently thrown under a bus by a small group of parents and the local media and I started to realize how political and unchildcentered this profession really is. I don't see myself ever doing anything that is not in the best interest of my students, but this really opened my eyes to how important other aspects of my live need to become. I have really given 100% of myself everyday at work for the past 10 years and I am not sure if they would return the 100% of the roles were ever reversed.
