Ipod Nano Problem - dots instead of time

My girlfriend's ipod nano has developed a strange behaviour.

Instead of showing where it is in the playback of a song, it shows 6 blue dots.

This stays there when you put the volume up or down - there is no visual feedback on volume or song position at all.

The song title etc is still here.

I have tried resetting all the settings in the menu but that doesn't seem to change this.

Any ideas?

You may not. I have the power to delete the thread and I'm not afraid to use it.

I'm only leaving it incase someone else has the same problem.
