That one was totally on Barrett, I really don't think AJ did anything wrong. Certainly nothing to the level of throwing a punch.

Even better. After AJ got to the dugout he started to put on his catching gear. Michael replaced his gear and was catching throws behind the plate as well.

Hey guys, there's no way either of you are staying in the game.

I was more surprised at the ejection of Mabry.

I think AJ may have said something as he purposely tried to walk pass Barrett. AJ wasn't headed to his dugout when he got up. AJ's dugout was the other way.

Well, AJ got cocky after bowling Barrett over on a play that wasn't even close. He slams his hands down on the plate and then up in the air. That said, it's nothing worse than, say, Jose Lima would do on a regular basis, tho. Don't want to see it in baseball, but definitely not justification for what happened next.

They exchange words and Barrett hauls off and lands a solid punch to Pierzynski's head and all hell breaks loose.

They've shown it twice on the Mets/Yanks snoozefest on Fox.

Ah, didn't realize his dugout wasn't on the first base side. It looked like when he got up he was heading for his dugout and Barrett moved in front of him. Barrett should have just given him a good shove then. That punch will cost him a few games and dollars.

I'd say about 90% as Pierzynski did try to show them up. That said, it takes a real man to go after a guy with a punch when you're wearing catcher's gear.

After hearing Dusty's comments during the game to FSN, I'd have to agree with RPI. Dusty said Michael was upset he got plowed despite not having the ball.

So he gets drilled in the jaw, then plays to the crowd?

Somebody's been watching tapes of Chris Neil.

Way to go Barrett... At least you give the Cubs another reason to score 1 or 0 runs the next few games. Pretty good punch though.

Wow. I was definitely wrong -- Barrett was being a complete punk.

And RPI, I'd think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who can hate Pierzynski more than me. I spent three months doing research on MLB catcher statistics to help out in his arbitration case. The data I gathered played a part in helping win him the biggest arbitration award in MLB History for a catcher -- which my team, the San Francisco Giants, eventually had to pay. We traded away Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser for Pierzynski. He proceeded to have a terrible season for the Giants while causing clubhouse strife, was released, then went on to win a World Series with the White Sox while posting a career high in HR.

I can't stand the guy.

AJ said that he was walking past Barrett to pick up his helmet, and if you watch the replay, it's pretty clear that's exactly what he was doing. Now that doesn't mean he didn't say something, but he definitely was walking toward where his helmet landed.

Yeah, just saw that on ESPN. The guys on FSN said his helmet went the other way. Maybe they just saw Podsednik's helmet.

Why was AJ thrown out of the game? After he got punched, he was standing behind the plate while the majority of the brawl was going on.

Well, the umps only got the one look at it - the first time I saw it, it looked like AJ lowered his shoulder into Barrett when going to get the helmet before the punch, too. I don't blame them for the toss, if nothing else than to ensure there's not another brawl later.

FYI Barret said he didn't think AJ had said anything to him when they came together. He was pretty apologetic about the entire incident.

Wow, AJ doesn't know the meaning of "laying-low"...

A.J. Pierzynski, who was punched in the face by Cubs catcher Michael Barrett yesterday, went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk in a 7-4 White Sox loss on Sunday. He was also involved in an altercation with Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano.

After Pierzynski homered off Zambrano in the fourth, the left-handed catcher started clapping his hands while rounding the bases. Zambrano began yelling at Pierzynski, who antagonized the Cubs starter further by pounding his chest and pointing to the sky -- as Zambrano often does when leaving the mound -- after crossing home plate. Zambrano became enraged and needed his teammates to restrain him, but the benches remained in their dugouts and play continued without incident.

Can Zambrano REALLY get upset about someone showing him up?

I'm not just trying to defend Pierzynski, but I think this point is interesting. Over the past couple years, I feel like there have been many times where pitchers have gotten upset about being "shown up" by batters, either after home runs, big hits, or just crossing the plate. And yet these are mostly the same pitchers who will sprint off the mound after a big K, start screaming, pounding his glove, etc. I'm not saying it shouldn't be done (on both sides), but seems to be a "pot calling the kettle black" situation.

can we get an over under pool or a poll started for the number of games barrett will be suspended for?

and as far as barrett being upset about getting run over when he didnt have the ball, what exactly would he like AJ to do with the entire plate blocked? stop at the batters box and say excuse me? if you are going to stand there, be prepared to get crushed by a guy coming down the line, ball in hand or not.

Not to mention the fact that it's technically illegal for the catcher to block the plate without the ball (although never called).

how the fuck does AJ get fined? really that's ridiculous!! you see the same thing in the NBA. Player A will go off and attack Player B, and player B gets fined even if he doesn't retaliate.

To me what that is is a disincentive to retaliate. If you're going to get punished either way, might as well get your licks in. AJ shoulda cleated Barrett in the nads at that point, if he was already looking at a fine. WTF

But if that's the case, then shouldn't Mabry have been fined too, since he was also ejected? He may have been, but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere (maybe I overlooked it?).

AJ said on PTI that he expected to be fined for exactly that, being tossed from the game for participating in a brawl.

Personally, I believe AJ may have been fined for his actions after the brawl.
