View Full Version : FOFC 2006 World Cup Pool
Official Scoreboard (http://www.joenitedstatesofamerica.com/cup.htm)
Alright, I'm participating in a few of these on different boards, so I thought it would be fun to bring it over here. Read the rules below and post with your entry if you would like to play.
- You select at least 3, but no more than 5, teams from the list of teams below. Each team has an assigned dollar value and you have $100 to spend. The combined value of your selected teams may not exceed $100.
- Points are earned based on how well your selected teams fare. The player who gets the most points wins. (duh)
- Players may post their selections at any time prior to the kickoff of the first game.
- Changes may be made prior to the first kickoff, but please do so with a new post instead of editing your previous post. There is no guarantee I will see the edit.
- No two players may select an identical set of teams.
- Tiebreaker will be the shirt number of the player scoring the final goal (whether in regulation, overtime, or a shootout) of the final match. Closest to the number wins. If the tiebreaker ends in a tie, the player who posted their picks first wins.

Personally, I'd make Brazil $60. :D
I'll go:
Brazil
Italy.
Australia
Sweden.
And no 9.
Subject to change before you finalize this right ?

This looks like fun. I'm going to go with the European squad of
Czech Republic (40)
Croatia (30)
Germany (30)
25
I'm hoping to hit a winner since getting a bunch of teams out of group play will net a lot of points as well.
remember to include a jersey number for tiebreaker

What's the deal with the no editing rule?
that was in there from the rules I stole. :) but it doesnt matter since all picks have to be in before the games start anyway. I suppose it was since no two people can have the exact same teams, if someone tries to edit and say they had it first?
I am going to go with:
Brazil (50)
Czech Republic (40)
Poland (10)
and 11 for the tiebreaker.

yep. would be easiest to make a new post for any changes before the start, so I dont have to go back and check for edits to what I have entered initially. i guess thats why the rule is in there.

Nevertheless, they should be $40 if they were #5?

Man, I knew I needed to hurry. Was going to look up some jersey numbers, but instead went with the conventional wisdom from before me just so I could get those three teams before someone else.

#10 seems like the easy choice for shirt number. First off, it's what Ronaldinho wears, so that's about a 50% chance of being it. :-p
Other than that, almost all starting attacking players on all teams will be 9, 10, or 11.
Yeah I didn't know numbers so I tried to read from the entries above mine what would be the safe choice. If I had the time I'd have looked up the info, but I didn't feel like I had time to do that. I really don't pay attention to the numbers people wear in general.

I won't need any help. I have excel to help me and can just use the replace function with point totals for where the teams are listed.
also, no more entries obviously
hmm.. is there any easy way to convert from excel into something the board can read? I tried converting to a webpage and then copy and pasting the html code, but that didn't work. I guess I can just throw a link to the spreadsheet and that will work. If anyone figures out a good way to display it here, let me know.

If they get four points from those two matches - which they ought to do, if they can get anywhere near their qualifying form - then that'll get them through. At that point, they're up against the winner of Group G, which right now looks like a pretty winnable match.
Ukraine actually have a fairly good shot at the quarterfinals, even after the Spain disaster.

As long as Ukraine haven't had their morale slaughtered they ought to still make it to the second round (Saudi Arabia and Tunisia were underwhelming) and they have a decent shot at a quarter-final place (none of their potential opponents have impressed so far).
Unfortunatley this and a bunch of other prediction leagues means I need Italy to do well. Which feels just plain wrong. Can't see Portugal (not good enough in attack - who would have thought it) or Germany (not good enough in defence - who would have thought itē) going all that far.

Katon
06-23-2006, 04:50 PM
I think Group C was a bit tougher, if you look how well the Ivory Coast played and never seriously looked like qualifying. They were better than either the Czechs or the USA, granting that Serbia were worse than either (though that could partly be because Argentina were completely unplayable against them). Those two groups were much harder than any of the rest, though.
Stage 1 is complete, and first place is shared by Narcizo and Fighter of Foo with 38 points. Remember in the coming rounds, scoring is worth increasing amounts of points, so many people can still win it.

I need a good performance by Spain today. I'm looking at Argentina vs. Italy in one semi's and Spain vs. England in the other. Assuming England flops that will guarantee I have both teams in the final.
Doing good so far.
I have a late question though: does the game for third place have any meaning for this game?
Didn't see this question before. The third place game is part of the final round, so yes, points are awarded the same as in the championship.
Today's results mean that Germany/Argentina split points 8/4, while Italy takes all 12 from their game.

Seems kind of weird to me that the 2nd place team in the WC won't score points, but the third place team will.
That said, I'm elated with the France win. Gives me 3 of the final 4 teams still alive. Woo.

I've got 3 out 4 final teams as well.
Also, does anybody else find it ironic that GWB is in last place? :)

Nah. That usually happens to the people who run these things.

Well, with an overtime loss, sure. Is there another way I missed?

Can we get a semi-final update here?
Can we get a semi-final update here?
yes you can. France sweeps all the points from Portugal, while Germany steals 8 from Italy. So that means we have a new leader. SackAttack takes the lead with 124, followed by Narcizo and Cschex at 112. Only 2 games remain.

So what happens if me and Narcizo tie and the winning goal is scored by the player wearing the #12 shirt? :D

rules say whoever posted their picks first would win. ;)

Then you should give the win to me for picking the right shirt #. ;)
I'm just happy to be the only person in the top 13 not to have picked Germany.

Oh, sweet, so I've got the tiebreaker on the tiebreaker with Narcizo, as long as the shirt # is 12 or less. :D
Narcizo

The only way I can win is if the Guese win (I think). And I really, really hope that doesn't happen. Even if nobody cares about the 3rd place team.
And actually, you guys cannot tie. Sack is up by 12, so even a portugal ET win and france loss would have Narcizo by 4. Yep Narcizo needs them to win. Another possibility is if both France and Portugal win in regular time, then Jari Rantanen's Shorts would win, since he has both teams and Sack doesnt have Portugal.
SackAttack wins. He has the lead and both teams in the championship. Nobody can catch him.
so there are 10 combinations that could have won the pool had they been selected:
-Germany, Italy, France, Ghana
-Germany, Italy, France, Ukraine
-Germany, Italy, France, Poland
-Germany, Italy, France, Australia, Ecuador
-Germany, Italy, France, Australia, Togo
-Germany, Italy, France, Australia, Serbia & Montenegro
-Germany, Italy, France, Australia, Trinidad & Tobago
-Germany, Italy, France, Ecuador, Togo
-Germany, Italy, France, Ecuador, Serbia & Montenegro
-Germany, Italy, France, Ecuador, Trinidad & Tobago
