Lowell got his 28th double in 42 games. Whta is the MLB record for most doubles in a season. I thought it was like 67. Which would mean he is on pace to break by the AllStar break!

He only has 21 doubles, which still puts him on pace for 82 by the end of the year.

The record is indeed 67.

not to mention that even if he did have 28, he still wouldn't be on pace to break it by the all-star break.

Sorry, I heard the Sox TV announces say he has 28. And I was thinking 39 games played and allstart game is about another 45 games away which would put him aroung 60 something.

Biggio is also on pace to beat 67. He has 19 in 45 team games so a pace of just over 68 doubles for the season.
Each player has a history of doubles, although Biggio is an all-time leader in that (one behind Hank Aaron for 9th on the career list). But considering his age I obviously can't assume he'll keep up the pace. Lowell will probably have too many of his doubles turn into home runs in the second half. Can't see either getting there, although it would be nice. That's a 75 year old record.

Can you imagine the hype on ESPN surrounding Mike Lowell's chase to break the doubles record?! It's the feel-good story of the year!

I would have bet money it was 68. Who holds the record now?

Lowell was built to rip doubles at Fenway.. He is also a pleasure to watch in the field.. Had a bad year last year but before that he is just a real solid player..

Congrats, if you had just a bit more power, you'd have hit 40 homers this year.

I find it interesting how the most relatively recent record is 59 by Todd Helton in 2000. One of these two guys should be able to at least get that. Who knew the Top 6 were all before 1940.

I remember one year Jody Reed was on pace to hit about 80 doubles. I think he hit 3 after the all-star break, ended up with about 45 or so.

The year he hit 45 doubles Jody Reed had 25 at the All-Star break. His only other two years with more than 40 doubles he had 21 and 22 at the break.

Heh
I may be thinking of somebody else from around that time. What I clearly remember was that there was somebody on pace to shatter the doubles record, and they ended up with single digit production post all-star break.

I remember that one year when Maddux took 15 wins into the AS game and won a total of 18 that year, I believe.

Jon Olerud had 37 doubles at the break the year he "threatened" .400 in 1993 but he had 17 after the break.
The next year Chuck Knoblauch had 37 at the break and 8 after the break. That same year Craig Biggio had 35 at the break and 9 after the break. Of course that was mostly because of the strike.

I couldn't believe Florida gave up on him. That one was the one that really baffled my mind. I couldn't understand why they were so willing to try to package him with someone good and get minimal return.

Who knows, but the Marlins lowering his market value certainly has helped my fantasy team. :p
Oh, and I'd also like to thank them for making him Second Base-eligible.

Add the fact that he's Cuban, and the Marlins' giving up on him so quickly makes even less sense.
