View Full Version : Pitboss Civilization 4 -- RESTART!
WVUFAN
05-25-2006, 09:55 AM
I've set up a Pitboss game, for those that are interested in it. It's considered an IP game (so it would be private), with 24 hour time limits on turns. What I need now is to find out if it works. :-)
So ... no one needs to download Pitboss, just connect to the game and play your turn.
Pitboss is a persistant PBEM server that allows you to play your turn and not have to wait on an emailed folder, and no one has to play in order -- so, come on anytime, play your turn and the next day, they'll be another turn to play. This makes for a MUCH faster game, and new players can come in (with permission from the group) and sub for missing/unavailable players at any time. I have 24 hour limits turned on, so if you don't play your turn in 24 hours, you're basically skipped. You continue to research, and continue to build if you have items in your queue, but you won't do anything else.
Large games can be played this way, since the turns will go after 24 hours regardless. What I need now is people to try this out and see if it works.
I'm looking for a maximum of 10 people to join.
How to join:
Go to your Civ 4 game, choose "Multiplayer" then "Direct IP", The game name is FOFC Dominion, and my IP is 24.239.76.92
Then choose your leader and play your turn. You can have email notifications sent to you when a new turn comes up if you want, but you don't have to. Simply log on every day and play the next turn. If there's someone else on at the same time as you, you can even chat with them, but again, this is in every way like a PBEM game, only you don't have to wait your turn. Give it a try.

Right now, there's 23 hours left on it. The game gives you a clock timer right on the Civ 4 screen.

Anyway, I'll check in tonight when I get a chance and will take a spot if there is one left. But I go home, eat dinner, give the kids baths, put the kids to bed, then I have an online gaming match at 8, so it'll be 9 eastern or so before I check in.

Doubtful. There'll probably be room. If there isn't, and there's enough people interested, I can start a second Pitboss game.
To the active players -- make sure you have set a password when you entered the game for the first time. Otherwise, anyone can log in and play as you.

Yeah, it'll do that when I respond from Pitboss -- it saves the "announcements" I put out for all the players until the end of the turn.

WVU, what does being the Pitboss entail?
was there a mod you have to download, and is your computer the persistant server, therfore having to be running the game at all times?
just wondering....depending on the details, i might be able to set a game up on my desktop

It's actually really easy. Download the Pitboss client (it's on the Firaxis site -- I'll see if I can't get the link for you if you want, and upzip it into your Civ4 Folder. Insert your original CD, and start up the Pitboss.exe file. The program is made and released by Firaxis, so it's completely compatable.
You actually set up the game from the Pitboss screen, from entering in your SMTP server info to how the game is set up. If you have an existing PBEM game, you can convert it to Pitboss, but otherwise, just follow the instructions on the screen.
The Pitboss file has to remain open at all times, so your CPU in essense becomes the server the game is hosted on, but it's a miniscule file, so for me it's no problem.
Like i said, if you're interested, I can get you the file. If I can set it up, anyone can.

So far with only one or two exceptions, everyone is interested in restarting, so that's what we're gonna do.
Now we're gonna be set for 12 players, so if there's other people that are interested, please sign up, as there will be 3 more slots available now.
EVERYONE WILL NEED TO RETAKE A CIVILIZATION.
To do so:
Open Civ4
Click "Multiplayer"
Click "Direct IP game"
Fill in the correct info. The IP for the game is 24.239.76.92.
The name for the new game is "FOFC Global"
Enter a password for the game.
Password is -- fofc
Select your Civ and enjoy!
So, if you haven't tried this out, take your civ. If you're in the old game, take a new civ.
Enjoy!

Dude... not cool. We should re-start. It's pretty weak having that sort of starting location.
Runtheball
05-26-2006, 12:24 PM
Well there couldn't be a worse starting location, could there? I can't believe the game would allow that, and I've never had that happen in single player.
I'd have no problem restarting because of this, but I'd hope that a map that has huge land masses would avoid this kind of setup.

But then you are hosting the server till the end of time? Can you host another one, or is your PitBoss program dedicated to this?
It's not a good idea to try and host two games from the same IP. I tried a test and it didn't turn out well.
Just because I get eliminated doesn't mean the game ends. It's really no big deal for me to host the game, and I have another PBEM game I'm active in.
Hell, if push comes to shove, I'll retire the Japs and grab an open Civ, since I think the only one that hasn't retaken their civ is Gstelmack, and I'm making sure there's a spot open for him.

We're not behind a firewall or anything... it's like I can connect fine, as long as certain other peers aren't connected before me.

It's rough and would be a challenge, but he hasn't settled, and can move south, so it's technically not a no-win. Certainly a challenge, though. I wonder if someone out there is so confident that they think they can take Germany to victory?

I'm using Zonealarm, but have given the program (and the packet-thingy) all available permissions. I'm sure the problem of connecting is not with me, as I've connected and chatted with several other players on each run of this game so far. In fact, I was connected and chatting before I went in and gave those progams all available permissions, so that step was apparently unnecessary.

Another great idea for pitboss is do a succession game.
You guys just pick one civ you agree on and play against the ai CIVS.
Then each person on your team take 20 turns per person all sharing the same Civ.

I am wondering if the pitboss program has trouble with two of the participants in a game being from the same IP (especially with ICS). Then it wouldn't matter if you were on at the same time or not. Just trying to think through the problem, and WVUFAN said that the program had trouble running two games at the same time (which it shouldn't) and I notice that all of the sync problems mentioned so far either have been you guys having trouble, or others gagging when syncing with you.

That seems to be a part of Pitboss. Occasionally, it does what it calls a "grace period" of between 15 minutes to an hour when everyone does their turn or when the 24 hour clock expires. I dunno who they're giving the grace period to if everyone's turn is up, and it doesn't seem to do that every turn, but it does happen. I appreciate your patience, Gtelmack and everyone.

Tell Sharon I'm sorry about that -- when I set the game for "Take over AI" -- which I have to do in order to reset players for password issues -- when someone retires, instead of eliminating the Civ, it set it as an AI civ. I have a 2.4 mhz P4 with less than a gig of memory, and I'm able to run multiple things with no problem. Plus it's really easy to set up.
I can send you the email notification program if you like. That runs concurrently with Pitboss. Both mimimize to your tray when not in use.
You can close it down anytime. It'll put a save file on your desktop (or whereever), so save it before shutting it down and then start it up like any other program. I honestly rarely notice it unless I'm actually on it... and it doesn't feel like anything else I do on the computer is affected by it.
You do have to have .NET extentions on your CPU for it to work, though.

I have another solution for this -- everyone let me know what you think. I will take control of the Germans. I will research NOTHING. Build NOTHING. Sharon can build the warrior and come over and kill them, and I won't stop it. It's a backhanded method of eliminating the civ, but again, Sharon shouldn't have to be in a race like this, since it's not fair to her.
The only thing I would ask is for her to raze the city, not conquer it. That way it remains fairer -- she'll get bonus points for destroying a civ, but that's to be expected.

Well, I think I'm in a good place. I'm at the end of a large pennisula, with a fair amount of space to work with, a nice river running through it, and it's got a mountain range protecting me from the other civs. So, it seems the only access the other civs will have to Japan will be through boats, and that's a good thing.
Has anyone made contact with other civs yet?

I'm gonna toss out an idea here to pick up the pace a bit, just for the next few turns. Not suggesting we do this regularly, just right now since we all have only one or two units to move anyway, and turns take only a couple minutes. If we could all arrange to be online at the same time for even just a half hour, we could probably get through at least 5-10 turns, maybe more. If we had an hour, even better. I know there's little chance that 11 people can coordinate to be online at the same time, and if its not all 11 of us it won't work. But maybe if we could post the times we'd be available and willing to play, we'd find some overlap. Again, its not likely to work, but I want to give it a try.
I have a very flexible schedule, and can arrange to be online at virtually any time everyone else agrees upon. But I'll suggest friday, saturday, or sunday evening June 9, 10, 11 from 8pm to 1am EST.

With kids and the like, I can sometimes check quickly in the morning before work (around 7-8 AM Eastern), but that'll go away once the turns start taking longer. Otherwise I'm usually checking between 8:30 and 10:00 PM Eastern; I'm putting the kids to bed before then, and getting ready for bed myself afterward.
Unless there's a playoff hockey game on involving the 'Canes. Then I'll check between periods or maybe commercials.

A pale orange hue hangs over the landscape of what appears to be a primitive band of ape-like beings... They introduce their leader, the Great Big Rude Despot, who our scout refers to by the acronym "G.B.R.D"

Eric,
I've downloaded the pitboss.exe and put it in the CIV4 folder, but when I try to run it it says some python (blah blah).dll file is missing. Is it necessary to download anything besides pitboss to get pitboss to run (like SDK)? I have the game on full install and the CD in the drive.

I had that issue, and I'm trying to remember how I fixed it...
I'm PRETTY sure that it was because I didn't have the Pitboss .exe in the Civ4 folder. Have you run a google search on the file? I think that's how I figured out the problem...

I do have pitboss in the Civ4 folder. In fact I've deleted it and re-installed it there several times now. I put the zip file there and unzip it into that directory just to be sure. I ran a google search and found only 2 references to that file...one was a guy asking the same question as me (with no respones) and another is to a very long thread where the question was asked and the answer was 'put pitboss in your civ4 folder'.

I'm assuming you're getting this message:
"This application has failed to start because boost_python-vc71-mt-1_32.dll was not found."
And you've said that you have Pitboss.exe in the same folder as your Civ4.exe file, right? A couple of questions:
- Do you have a modded Civ4.exe file?
- Do you have .Net extensions installed?
- You said there wasn't a Firaxis folder on your desktop .. how do you have yours set up? The default setup is Firaxis/Civilization4/. That very well may be the trigger right there.

That is the exact error message I'm getting.
I don't have any mods for Civ4.
I don't have .net installed (not to my knowledge anyway)
I believe the install defaulted to "my documents/my games/Sid Meier's Civ 4"; at least I don't think I would have selected that location myself...I have my own "games" folder on the C drive.
I recall reading something a long time ago about .net, that it was a very insecure and subject to hacking. I don't recall the details, and know very little about network security, but I've always avoided installing it. Can anyone enlighten me about the security aspect of the .net thing?

Ahhh ... there's the problem.
Civ4 installs in two places on your CPU -- the save files go to My Documents, the main files go to Program Files.
There actually should be a Firaxis folder. Go to My Computer, then click on Program Files, and look for "Firaxis Games". Install Pitboss there, and try to run it from there.
Don't worry about .Net -- that's only needed for the turn notification. I have to run turn notification because I use GMail, which has a wierd port it uses for SMTP.
Runtheball
06-15-2006, 08:29 PM
I checked Program Files, even using the Search utility in XP, and using the File Options menu to 'show hidden files'. There is no Firaxis folder, and Civ4 is only residing in My Documents. Again it's odd that I'd allow it to install there, or choose to put it there, since I always install games into my C:/games directory. Anyway, that's where it is. I suppose Pitboss doesn't look there for the files it needs, but I don't see a way to direct the Pitboss.exe to look anywhere else.
I appreciate the help, and wish I could get it to work. But I'm already beyond my frustration tolerance level, so unless someone has a magic bullet for this issue I've given up.
