You should be able to copy everything in your public_html folder over to the new hosting site. Just copy everything within the directory to your hard drive and move it to your new host. As long as you kept the same name, the links should work properly.

so i need to wait until the old host gets their shit together to "pull" everything off of their server before transferring domain to the new host? I think I have it all but I dont want to risk if it is a matter of waiting just a few days. I couldnt put a transfer through and have both up at the same time, it doesnt make sense...so Ill wait a few days to grab everything in a huge dump to my hard drive then shoot it over via FTP in the same form?
When I grab everything off the old server will it download to my HD with the same extensions, trees, links or do I need to do all of that manually?

Pull everything down, save it on your PC, load it all into your new webspace, using the IP/local address for the new space make sure everything works, THEN transfer your domain name, that way everything in the old site is there and working right up to the time internic gets the domain connected to the new site.
Seemless tranferance.

i dont think i understand 1and1's site in regards to this. I bought a hosting package with no domain, thinking I would then move mine over, but I cant seem to login anywhere. Tis very confusing for a website moron.

You have my sympathies Flasch, its difficult at times for those of us with a clue. I wish you luck!
make sure you do a backup of the message board

Yes, if your message board uses MySQL you'll need to export your tables with data so you can re-import them on 1and1.
They should have given you a cPanel login and FTP login even without a domain. You should also get an IP address to use with your domain registration to point there. Search around on 1and1's site for instructions or FAQs. Cuckoo may have more info, as he uses 1and1 I believe.

okay, so im in...but there is a weird DNS:
s161417.onlinehome.us
is this where I send stuff over first to make sure it works? Than transfer the USFL name over to match this, which has already been created?

do you know how to do that MySQL transfer? is it easy? Could you do it for us when things settle down?
Im afraid of myself.
when I transferred my message board to my new site, I had to have my hosting company restore it for me, since the database was too big to do through the phpbb software, and kept getting errors. In the control pannel under general admin, you go to backup database, then click on full backup. On the forum on the new site you will go to the same place but click on restore database instead.

i think i get it. When you click on "full backup" is it backing it up on their servers, or is it backing it up on my HD? When I hit restore is it doing it from ther server(s) or from the back up copy on my HD?
BTW - right now Blazernetwork cant even login so perhaps their building burnt down.

it makes a backup on your PC - goes to the desktop. when you hit restore on the new site you will search for the folder on your machine and it restores it from there.

This is where you access the database. It most likely supports PHP if it has MySQL. So you should be able to transfer the data here.

By the way, that was good advice.

I use 1and1 for our FBCB league, if you have any questions as you're doing things, feel free to ask. I think you found most of what you're looking for already though, the mySQL Administration link is where you would go to restore things for a phpBB database.

thanks for the invitation for help, With Render's, Joe's and your's advice and help I may succeed in this transition. First Im hoping that Blazernetwork.com gets back up so I can do the whole copy thing....I think I have it all backed up but it has been so long I would be nervous moving without doing another one.
Is this the temp DNS direct IP thing that Render mentioned:
s161417.onlinehome.us
and I can upload to there now and have the URL USFL-FOF.com assigned to that IP when I officially do the transfer?

If I understand what you're asking, then yes :) You can use http://s161417.onlinehome.us to access your new 1and1 site. That address is permanent and will always be available, and until you point USFL-FOF.com to it, that's the address you'll use to do the transfer.

ahhhh, so I can tell USFL-fof.com to point at that particular IP After the fact...nice. That was confusing me a bit but if I can get it to work then thats where Render's Seamless comment comes in....nothing I do seems seamless anymore :)

unbelieveably they are still crashed today...I guess they took memorial day off too (cant blame them) but it is frustrating that they dont update anyone ever on what is happening. They could have packed up their offices and moved since even their own homepage has crashed.

My experience with 1and1 has been largely positive. There are rarely errors, and the packages are quite a bit better than most hosts.
However, and this may be very big to some people, their support is absolutely horrible. And I'm not even exaggerating when I say that. The people on the phone know very little, e-mails often take an insanely long time to be answered and I don't get a real feeling from them that they really care much about the "customer."
All of that said, I stick with them because overall they're very reliable and the prices are great. In the interest of honesty, though, they're well below average in the area of support.
