View Full Version : I hate rain

SirFozzie

We're not as bad off as the folks on the cape (some areas have gotten 4-5 inches of rain already)..

but god, this is the rainiest year I can remember.

May was the 2nd rainiest May in Massachusetts History as the middle of the month, we may have surpassed the record by the end of the month.

We average 3.5 inches of rain in June, that may be beaten by the end of today (1.26 inches so far today, the heaviest rain will be this afternoon, and getting close to 3 inches of rain on the month)

God. I'm tired of it.

I hate them with you. Seems like it rains every weekend around here, then we get a few partly sunny days (Monday-Wednesday) and it's forecasted to rain again from Thursday to Sunday with cold weather to boot. My son has a football game on Saturday and a soccer game on Sunday. Oh, he will have a blast, I'm sure of that. Daddy on the other hand is gonna freeze his ass off by the sideline... Oh well...

Please, please send some rain here. It has rained a total of about 10 minutes...FOR THE WHOLE YEAR. Most of the state is in high to very high fire danger with the NW part enacting an outright ban (the rest of the will like follow sometime, I think). The mountains are relatively better than the Front Range but that only shows that danger in the areas where there are high populations.

It's like alien weather here. On Memorial Day, it was 90 degrees. Only a week before, the temperature was barely cracking 50, if it even got that high. In between, it was raining every day. Then, last week, it started raining again. Now it's about 80 degrees and clear. It's all over the place. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some snowfall here within the next month.

I think I want to go back to Louisiana. Sure, it's hot, humid, and rainy every afternoon, but at least I know what to expect!

Yep, I've been here for 10 months, and I've really seen it all now. It was about 90 degrees with near 100% humidity on the day I got to Pennsylvania. Three months later, there was a day of snow. Then the weather warmed up long enough to get us to Thanksgiving, and then the snow got pretty heavy. It calmed down for a few weeks until February, and then we were still getting a little bit of snow in mid-April. I don't know how you guys handle it, but I'll learn.

At least I live in downtown Greensburg, so I don't have any grass to cut. The landlord dispatches a grounds crew to handle the small yard behind the house. :D

Somebody explain to me why it is that at any given time in this country, there is someplace in a drought, and some other place enjoying floods. Why is it that we can't move water around the way we do electricity? If New Mexico needs some extra power, Texas or somebody will sell it to us. But I'm pretty sure it's actually illegal for New Mexico to import water in the same way. Does anybody understand this topic?

I don't know what the legalities are, but mechanically speaking, water is a hell of a lot heavier than electricity.

Irrigation design for small farms is a major challenge and consequently big business. It's simply not as practical as moving electricity.

It's not the transportation and distribution of water that is the problem. Afterall, we have these massive water projects of dams, levees, canals, and pipes that transport and control water throughout the West (the East never needed water so very few projects of the kind were ever built). The problem is simply water rights, not only from the source but where water should/could end up.

It's not just how much you can take safely from the resevoirs and such.. it's the total strain on the system. You can't put that much through the pipes at anyone time without putting a huge stress on the system.

Aha!
A little research gave me the answer,

In response to a potential water shortage in the county, Howard County fire officials have drawn up emergency plans and shuffled staff and equipment in case of a large fire.
Utilities officials added that they would crack down on scofflaws who violate recently issued water restrictions by shutting off the violators' water and fining them $60 before restoring water service.
The departments' strategies come on the heels of an announcement by county officials last week that residents must use less water this summer thanks to an impaired water main in Baltimore County. The damage to that main has cut off one of Howard County's most significant water sources indefinitely.

At least here in MA, it's because so much more water is used on lawns and on pools and all that (not to mention kids in the sprinkler!)

Whomever sent the rain to Colorado this past week, thank you. In certain places, we went from 10% of average to close to 90%. Most of you could not have imagined how scary it was last month to have almost no measurable precipatation since last August. It seemed like the hot, dry and windy weather would never end and that a single moron throwing a cig out the window would send the whole state up in flames. It will be hot and dry later this week but as long as the monsoon rains have a chance of developing, we'll get some rain on a regular basis.
