Cold War Movies

I just got the movie "By Dawn's Early Life" about Nuclear War between USA na dUSSR. I haven't ever seen it but from the review on Amazon it sounded like I would like it. Any ever seen it. How about other old Cold War movies. Another fav of mine is the "Dr. Strangelove: How I Learned to Love the Bomb."

Ice Station Zebra (http://imdb.com/title/tt0063121/) is pretty much a classic Cold War era movie.

And I've always thought The Bedford Incident (http://imdb.com/title/tt0058962/) was an outstanding piece of film making.
(If you aren't familiar with it, avoid the spoilers completely & just watch it. A great tension building movie with a killer finish IMO)

I didn't *ask* about anything ;) Just pointing out that I thought that movie sucked, but I may have had my opinion clouded by the fact that I read the book. "Force 10 from Navarone" is in the same category (and from the same author). Alistair MacLean was one of my favorite authors growing up, and I hated how they butchered some of his movies.

Now, "The Golden Rendesvous" was well done, and one of these days I'll find a DVD of it. "Where Eagles Dare" and "Guns of Navarone" were classics as well.

Since I digressed on this, I might as well contribute to make amends. For Cold War-era movies, do you want military or spy? "Hunt for Red October" was pretty good. Avoid ANYTHING that was made-for-TV during the 80s/90s as they were just left-wing political nutjob anti-nuclear pieces of junk (you know, back when the "anti-nuclear" protestors would blast NATO and not say one word about all the weapons behind the Iron Curtain...)

Oops, digressing again. As I said, "Hunt for Red October" was pretty good. "Crimson Tide" was another decent sub movie, even if not truly Cold War. "Fail Safe" is an oldie-but-goodie. And of course, "Red Dawn" was awesome. If I can dredge up any others from the depth of my memories, I'll post them.

Spies like Us was a horrible turd of a movie, though the one Russian woman was nice.

"No Way Out" was a great movie about the Cold War, yes, a good Kevin Costner movie!

"Red Heat" the buddy movie with AH-nold and of all people, James Belushi.

Even "Predator" had some Cold War elements.

I do recall but never watched "Amerika" which seemed to be like Red Dawn but a tv miniseries.

Red Dawn was the first movie I ever bought on DVD. I wore out several VHS tapes back in junior high watching it. Me and my friends would plan out during the summer what we'd do if we got attacked like that. Our plan consisted basically gathering up all our camping equipment and firearms, and hightailing it to the mountains of northern New Mexico. We had the topo maps of the area, and spent time scouting out the best spots to set up shop. Good times.

LOL. We were pretty goofy too. We were Dungeons and Dragons freaks and would play D&D (with D&D rules) in a modern setting with all of us being our own player characters.

The first thing we did was steal this van owned by one kid's dad. Then we would run over a Soviet trooper (we lived in Germany at the time) and take his weapon and grenades, then we would drives to the hot chicks houses and make sure they were with us and then head to the mountains, fighting through Soviet check points along the way.
