Keanu Santiago seeks fame in new Menudo.
Once more, with feeling.
A nationwide talent search to revive the bilingual boy group Menudo kicked off in Harlem yesterday.
"I want to be a singer when I grow up," said Rick Morrero, 15, a 10th-grader from the Bronx and one of about two dozen aspiring teen idols who auditioned at the 116th Street Festival in East Harlem.
"If I wind up the next Ricky Martin or Marc Anthony, that would be great!" he said with a winning smile.
Menudo, which had a perpetually revolving membership, sold more than 40 million records in the 1980s and early 1990s, and launched Ricky Martin's solo career.
Members of the troupe were replaced when they reached their 16th birthday or when their voice changed.
Barry Solomon, a partner with Menudo Entertainment, which owns the merchandising and property rights to the group for teenyboppers, said five new members would be chosen by next June. They will perform urban/Latin crossover music in both English and Spanish.
"The last time Menudo performed live was in 1991, so we're going to bring them back," Solomon said.
In the group's prime, the pop medical term "Menuditis" was coined for girls who needed medical attention after attending Menudo concerts.
