View Full Version : What is you Ideal Home Arcade?

I'm curious as to what people would put in a home arcade, if they could afford one.
So, the scenario is:
You've just bought a new house, and have thought that it would be cool to have an Arcade Room. You can put a few of your favourite arcade games in the room, but it's not a gigantic room. I'm not setting any sort of minimums or maximums on the number of arcade machines you can put in the room, but keep it reasonable please. :)
As for my choices... right now I would put in:
The Simpsons
X-Men (the one where you can have a bunch of people playing)
Raiden 2 (or some sort of similar shooter)
WWF Wrestlefest
That baseball pinball game with ramps that come up in certain situations, and you can win cards... I loved that game

That;s a great list. One game I'd add is the NFL Blitz/NBA Showdown all in 1 set with the huge screen. Also SF Rush 2049.

South Park pinball machine
The OLD Atari football game with the trackball on each end
Kangaroo (most probably don't remember this, it was Atari's answer to Donkey Kong. I played the hell out of that game at the arcade. In fact, I had the nationwide high score on it for a month. I'll have to dig out the old copy of Electonic Games magazine)
A Red White and Blue vegas slot machine

NBA Jam - the original, when Charles Barkley and Dan Majerle were on the Suns
Star Wars (the old-school sit-inside-and-shoot-the-Asteroid-esque-Death-Star model)
Black Knight (old pinball game - must have played it a billion times at the Wisp Ski Resort in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. My brothers and I were very competitive on that).
AfterBurner II
I'd also go for an air hockey table and maybe a skee-ball lane.

Same here. I think I've played Tron more than any other arcade game. It was great, though I think I only ever got to "Level 4" once. The difficulty curve on that game was insane. First level, painfully easy. Second level, a bit trickier, but still quite doable. Level Three? Near insanely difficult. Level Four? Forget it.

- Cyberball Tournament Edition (the multiplayer one)
- NBA Showtime/NFL Blitz combo
- Battle Zone
- I can't think of the name, but there was a baseball arcade game in the late '80's that featured spring-mounted joystick for batting (pull back and release at the right time) and a side-mounted joystick for pitching (pull back for velocity, angle it for the amount and direction of curve)
- Addams Family pinball machine
- at least four flatscreen TV's with individual Xbox360's networked together for mulitplayer goodness
- a Wii when it comes out with many classic Nintendo games downloaded from their online service
- air hockey table
- classic foosball table

Could be - I don't remember the name, just the physical setup of the game. I thought the joystick thing worked really well, especially the pitching portion.

Sounds like world series baseball to me. Here is the link with the description.
A baseball game that offered many more play options than previous video baseball games. The game used analog joysticks for precise control of swings and pitches.

Ah, I kinda remember World Series Baseball. I don't remember the analog joysticks being spring-mounted like dawgfan mentioned, but I could be wrong.
Another question for dawgfan about this game: Were the "joysticks" actually about as thin as a paper clip? Just small little silver metal pieces, rather than a whole joystick?

Wonder if it was the same baseball game I was trying to remember. There were 2 modes - HR Derby and regular game. .25 cents usually bought you 2 innings and the game kept track of your stats so, you could come back, log back on and start playing again....

ESPNZone in Times Square, NYC has this exact game. too lazy to confirm, but i remember loving that swingable joystick and the MLB rosters (from like the early-to-mid 90's).

Wrestlefest -- that game was just awesome
TWA Wrestling -- The one with Koko Savege and The Piranha

Cyberball -- Naturally
Blades of Steel -- That damn trackball made my hands bleed
Two with names I can't remember:
- The baseball game that had real MLB players and the all-star rosters from like 1991. The AL had Cecil Fielder and Canseco.
- The one-on-one hockey game with the blue guy vs the red guy.

I think that was a two-on-two, NBA Jam type game. I remember playing it in college. You're apparently a lot younger than me.
Now that I think back, I think the one I'm thinking of was called Hat Trick. It was cool because the players left little lines in the ice.

I have a couple of friends with air hockey and foozball tables and they get old really fast. So do most video games. I think you need either pinball or some sort of sports game to make it worth the investment. Journey is a great memory, but that could end up sucking after about 5 minutes.

I'm batting .000 right now. :(
The next additions would be the USSR / USA hockey game, Track & Field, Super Off Road, skeeball, and a downhill ski game where you actually stood on skis and slid left and right (can't remember the name, but we used to always play it at a bar).
I've gone to one of the video game auctions in Milwaukee. My wife let me go to check one out, but not buy anything. They actually did have a working APB, but the accelerator tended to stick. Who needs brakes anyway?

Gauntlet was one of the ones I'd seriously thought about adding in, especially one of the newer versions, but then I realized with as much room as Derby Owner's Club would take up in this moderately sized room, I might only have space for one more game and that my friend, is Golden Axe hands down. :D
I remember my elementary years being consumed by this game, especially on vacations to the Dells. Finally, one night the babysitter who always sat for me whenever we were at the Dells and my parents were out for the evening (she was this incredibly hot blonde girl who was the hotel owner's daughter) said, "Why don't we just keep playing until we beat this game?"
And we did. It didn't take us all that much money as by that time, both of us were pretty damn good at it. The final boss is what took up most of our money because he was one tough badass.
That was a sweet, sweet feeling beating that game. And the different animals you could ride and the spells you could cast made the game a hell of a lot of fun. For some reason I always took the dwarf. She always took the Amazon.
