View Full Version : Don't get out much

So my wife and I have a pretty hectic life - full time jobs, high school football coach, 4 kids (one is a baby)

so to say the least we don't get out much and when we do it tends to be to see a movie where an animated animal of some sort dances and sings a lot.

My mother (who lives a couple of hours away) is coming down Saturday to watch the kids and give my wife and I a night out. Now she doesn't want to see a movie since that is just her and I sitting and not really interacting.

So my question and point of my post is what is it you guys do on the weekends? (that is the ones that are married, I know what single guys do and I don't think my wife would go for me trying to go out and get laid) I spent about an hour looking for things to do online and didn't really come up with anything - all the museums are closed, I don't really care for the theatre (I looked anyway, but didn't see anything remotely interesting) we live about an hour outside of San Francisco - but I am not really looking for something specific, just more of what you generally do on a free Saturday and maybe some websites that list places to go.

I'm fond of saying that my wife and I are kids at heart. We do silly stuff like go to Dave & Buster's to play in the game room, or we'll go miniature golfing or bowling, or perhaps we'll just walk around a shopping area. Basically, we go out and "play." I don't know what the more "grown-up" adults do.

Oh, I almost forgot. Occasionally, I stand in the backyard and just let my wife hit me with a tennis racquet, but that's just to entertain the neighbors.

my old man spends a typical weekend afternoon at home depot, not so sure mom enjoys it but he always seems to have a blast.

The Saturday before Memorial Day, we went out with my wife's hot aunt to a Pirates game that lasted for 18 innings. Earlier that day, my wife's aunt got shoved in a store by Corbin Bernsen. I think he was mad at us for something that had happened earlier in the day, but that's another story.

Anyway, sporting events can be fun, too.

Dinner, followed by a bar, live music, a lot of alcohol, and then get freaky with her in the back of a Volkswagon.

We usually are too tired to go out on Fridays from work to stay out all night, so we end up grabbing dinner and maybe a bottle of wine and stay in.

Saturdays, if there are a group of people or so going out, we will go out and get plastered, and then pay for it in the morning, but that doesn't happen too often.

If there aren't a group of people going out though, I'd rather stay in with the wife and drink with her than pay more money to drink with a bunch of strangers. Now unless my wife guaranteed a threesome with some hot chick at the bar, that would be a different story (with pix).

My wife and I would get a hotel.

And use it to sleep.

OK, i misread that as "shaved", not shoved. and it made for a pretty crazy story.

Dinner. There are a few bars we like. Sometimes, we'll go somewhere we haven't been and just spend 2 or 3 days there. Last trip was to a beach in Alabama a few months ago. Of course, we also spend a lot of quiet cozy nights at home.

Despite what Pumpy thinks, bowling isn't just for kids.

Go bowling!

Absofreakinglutely!! Dave & Busters is the place... where else can you have dinner, drink and play arcade games?

How about having a picnic? I love nature and having a picnic in the mountains surrounded by trees, birds, peace and quiet is amazing.

Well, I didn't mean to suggest that I think bowling is just for kids. It's just that when my wife and I go bowling, it's "playing." I guess I get the general impression that a lot of other adults really aren't looking to go out and play games. If they are, great.

I overdid the bowling so much last weekend that I pretty much shredded one side of my thumb. I've been bowling for less than a year, but I think it's great. I bowled my first 200 game last Thursday. That was a proud moment for me. :)

We've got a six week old daughter and we just recently had the oppurtunity to go out on a date and we didn't want to do the usual dinner and a movie for the same reason your wife didn't want to go and see a movie. So, we went out for a bite to eat and then drove down to the river valley and just walked and talked for a couple of hours. Probably not my favorite thing to do, but the wife really appreciated it......and that appreciation went a long way later on that night...if ya know what I mean!! Wink, wink.

Other suggestions would include going to the beach, as I'm sure you're probably pretty close to a plethra of them...go on your own little pub crawl...just head to several bars, best if you go to a variety of bars, and have a drink and just take in the atmosphere of each one and then move on to the next one...hop in the car and just drive, doesn't matter where, but preferably somewhere you've never been before and just see what there is to see, maybe stop for dinner somewhere or take a picnic with you, doesn't matter.

Most importantly, have fun and enjoy yourselves!!

wow - thanks guys for the various suggestions

a couple thoughts

bookstores - we are both avid readers and use to go to bookstores all the time before the kids, but we did that last time my mom came down to watch the kids, so I figured I need something new

My wife and I would get a hotel.

And use it to sleep.

This is probably the best one in here and believe me one I have considered - the baby is teething and any period of sleep beyond three hours in a row is a distant memory.

Bowling - this might work, again something we use to do a lot of pre-kids.

Sporting Events - great suggestion, but not so sure my wife would go for this. I tend to watch a lot of sports on TV and there is literally not a month in the year that I am not coaching either high school sports or one of my kids youth sports - I think if I suggest taking in a game she might have be shot.

Dave & Busters is not bad - I think I will run that one by her.

Beach, Walk, Romantic stuff - yeah I could probably swing that - Most married guys tend to complain about their wives, but outside of the occasional female emotional outburst she is a pretty great gal - I don't mind spending quality time together.

Dinner, followed by a bar, live music, a lot of alcohol, and then get freaky with her in the back of a Volkswagon.

we are BOTH too fat to get freaky in a volkswagen, but we do have a monster SUV - so I will think about this one.

Thanks again guys and keep em coming

How about a comedy club?

I thought about that - problem is Jon Lovitz is playing at the club in the city and although he can be funny at times - I am not sure I see him being the central point of a night out.

Now if Ron White or Bryan Reagan was playing I would be all over that.

Yeah, if the mother is going to be spending the night, definitely just get a nice hotel room, take her out for a good dinner, and bring a bottle of wine back to the room. It'll give you guys some time alone to just relax, enjoy each other's company, and dent the headboard.

Not all picnics end that well. :D

Seriously though, a two-person picnic is usually a good time.

thanks again for all the suggestions and I am sure you are all hanging on the edge of your seats to find out what we are doing (heavy sarcasm intended)

we, well mostly my wife, decided to go to dinner and then down to this small little wine store that has wine tasting "parties" on the weekend.

now I don't mind a little wine with dinner, but prefer beer or gin - but my wife LOVES wine - so that is the plan.

well, no sooner did I post this then I had a great idea and I have upgraded our plans (and my wife has no idea) from the local wins store to the wine train in Napa.

a little pricey - but she will be thrilled.

I don't know if you guys are Radiohead fans, but they're playing at the greek theatre in Berkeley on Saturday.

Also, an evening of just walking around the city of SF and having dinner at a nice place is really romantic, if your wife digs that kind of stuff.

so the wine train was a BIG hit - my wife was on cloud 9 all night (and a little hammered) and remarked it was one of her favorite nights of her life. I am pleased she enjoyed it so much.

I thought it was nice, but since I had an hour drive home I only drank 2 glasses of wine, the food was "foofy" food which she loves and I don't AND I knew how much it all cost (close to $400) so it wasn't as good for me.

But, she certainly showed her appreciation when we got home and I was very happy to see her enjoy herself so much.

If any of you guys are from the bay area, or get out this way - I highly suggest it.

oh and thanks again for all the suggestions - I really appreciate all the input.
