My name is Bea and I am a FM addict..
I have gone from knowing nothing about professional "soccer" (and laughing at anyone who called themselves a fan) to a hardcore junkie. Because of this game I have:
1.) Subscribed to 442 magazine.
2.) Paying my current cable company an extra $10.00 a month so I can get the "sports package" that includes GOL TV and Fox Soccer Channel.
3.) Passed on going to a MLB game just to watch England Vs Ecuador (Tivo).
4.) Was excited to wear my Celtic FC shirt to a Highlander Games festival just to see how many Ranger fans I could piss off.
I am ready to add a #5 which is the Direct Kick package. I have watched MLS over the past 2 years and while at first I was more attracted to the English and Scottish Leagues, I have acquired a better respect for our League and know that if it is going to go anywhere it needs support from fans like me.
What I am asking for from my fellow FOF FM fans is to help me decide what team to call my own.
I live just outside Detroit, so obviously no local team, so I have narrowed down the list:
Chicago - Close to me & I like Rolfe
Columbus - Close to me & I like Hedjuk
New England - Twellman is my favorite player in the League
New York - I enjoy watching Buddle.
Please vote and explain why . Also, feel free to give your opinoin on the MLS and if you enjoy following.

If it has to be one of the four, I say Columbus.

Columbus because I heard the Fire are a bunch of nazis, New England is busy making love with Sir Fozzie, and New York.. well, fuck New York.

Ditto, I wouldn't pick a team because of one player as he may move on and then what? With that said between Chicago and Columbus I have always preferred Columbus.
FYI - I'm a Revs fan.

Revs also have Clint Dempsey :)

Somewhat related question - I'm not going to be able to get to the Celtic FC - DC United match on July 12th, but will likely be in Boston for when they play the Revs on 7/19. Anyone from here going? What's the best way to get to Foxborough without a car? (I'll be staying on the green line downtown, most likely).

Yes, after he was one of the few who showed up at the WC and played with some kind of passion. I am now a Dempsey fan.

I voted Columbus. That isn't a horrible drive from detroit and with the new stadium you don't have to put up with as much OSU stuff (which I am assuming you wouldn't want to). I like having the option of seeing the team I like live even if you are only going to make it to one or two games a year. Hedjuk - meh IMO but players are going to come and go.

Here is a map of the commuter rail for Massachusetts. In the lower left area you can see a stop for Foxboro, which conncts to Mansfield on the Attleboro/Providence line. Unfortunetly this stop only runs for Pats games and some major concerts.
If you can not find a ride but still want to go the best bet would be to get on the Attleboro/Providence commuter rail either at South Station or Back Bay Station in Boston. Then get off at Mansfield and take a cab.
There may also be bus routes from Mansfield to Foxboro.

Found a better on for you.
$12.50 from South Station to Foxboro

The bus station is 5.6 miles from Gillette Stadium and you can take a cab from there

New York. Then you can suffer as all true soccer fans do (yes, I am a Newcastle fan, why do you ask?) ;).

Or find someone (like myself) who lives near three T stations and is willing to take folks to the game :)

2007, Toronto FC, not all that far from Detroit. You can experience the joys of an expansion team.

Not Columbus. Anything but Columbus. Nothing good comes from there. It's a dark, dirty bad place.

You know, that's probably a decent option. Toronto or Columbus would be closest. With Toronto though you get to come in on the ground floor.

Columbus. They had the first soccer specific stadium in the league.
And the DK package is worth it. I signed up for it this year for the first time and have no regrets.
edit to add one regret i just remembered - The Chivas AT Dallas match a few weeks back was broadcast via the Chivas Spanish station feed... As an English-speaking FCD fan, that was a little kick in the pants...

After this great HD coverage of the WC, I don't think I can go back to standard definition EPL, MLS, La Liga, etc broadcasts :(.

And that I don't have (I have INHD instead). Though with ESPN now having to pay rights fees for the MLS, maybe we'll get a slicker presentation and more games. That would be nice.
It would be nice if Fox Soccer Channel can get a clearer feed as well (I find GolTV's feed of Spain to be absolutely wonderful for a SD picture).

Columbus! The Crew haven't won anything yet, but I think they're actually headed in the right direction... so you can say you kind of got in on the ground floor.
