to the greeting of a voice mail before leaving a message? I'm just curious because the idiots calling my cell phone don't.

A couple months ago, some tech support manager for a company was given a new cell phone and the best I can figure it was close enough to my number that this genius went around and gave my number mistakenly to everyone he knew. The first couple weeks, I was polite and informed everyone that called they had the wrong number and to ask them to inform the idiot to please let folks know his correct cell phone number. After a month, I even changed my voice mail to let people know this WAS NOT Idiot Boy and I have nothing to do with tech support for XXX Company. I've called the company multiple times and asked them to correct this as well. Despite all that, I still get a couple messages a day from people trying to contact this guy. What's worse is it's usually the same freaking people calling. Usually it's the freaking company that calls me from different offices in the area. I've gotten some priceless messages though. Once someone told me I needed to change my greeting because it sounded like I didn't work for the company! Another time I got a message saying "I don't know who this Bruce guy is, but Idiot Boy...I need you to do XXX". At least those people actually listened to the greeting I guess...

Add the repeat offenders to some special category where they will get directed to a different voicemail box than your normal one. And then try to find the verbal equivalent of tubgirl for that box.

LOL... damn, is there a way to get a new vmail message for certain phone numbers? If so, I can imagine that recording a fax machine transmitting data would be nice thing for them to hear.

I had the same problem with my home phone number a few years ago. I got a ton of calls for coffee machine warranty repair. I eventually added to my voicemail message that anyone calling for repair work had gotten an old number, but it was still over a year before those calls stopped coming, and I did get 2-3 people leaving messages for repair each week.

I have the same problem with my work cell phone. The people keep calling for Jose (who apparently speaks Spanish ... and I don't). So I get random calls saying in Spanish and of course they have no idea what I am saying and vice versa.

Apparently this guy Jose wasn't too great a person. I've gotten midnight collect call messages from prison, and I keep getting messags from financial institutions for Jose about not paying some fees/loans. Needless to say the bank people don't listen to the VM message either and actually note that it's not Jose's name on the message.

I would say that if you guys work for the same company but the name is different, it could just be that people think they got the name wrong. Plus, it's not as if voice mail always has the greatest crystal clear clarity. That said, some people are just lazy.

You're not going to be a very good loan collector if you hear a different name come up than what you're looking for, and hang up the phone automatically. :)

i get this with email. i politely emailed the guy with a very similar gmail account (his is "andrew" mine is "andy") and asked him to correct the problem or at least respond. he never responded to me. not even to say "k thanks".

so now i just delete all his messages, from his real estate broker, from his aunts/uncles, and from the organizations that want him to speak at their seminars.

Heh... at least with email it is easier to deal with. I know my vmail requires me to listen to the entire message before deleting.

I get this one too, except it's not Jose. It's people calling for "Jose" or "Pedro" or whatever. His friends or whatever. These people are probably in their 50s. They've called for the last 8 years, maybe once a month. One of these times I'm going to say "Pedro" died. And they leave messages on our answering machine, which by listening to the message you would easily tell you have not called "Pedro".

I also get it on my cell phone. I've gotten a few calls to "Javier" to come pick up my baby from the hospital. Woops. I should just tell them to keep it.

my mother does. despite knowing my schedule, she still thinks my schedule on my VM (which is 3 years old and completely changed now) is my schedule.

I get this with work email...I'm in Pittsburgh. Guy in Denver same name.

They now list our departments next to our names, but I still get a handful of his emails a week, and he gets mine.

Everytime I forward it to him, I copy the original sender...who always respnds "One of you should get a middle initial added!" Because, you know, they don't read PRIVATE WEALTH MGMT next to my name , but they would notice my middle initial.

I also get the email ones at work due to the same name issue. Apparently the guy works in some IT field location - can't quite figure out what he does. But I get requests to approve vacation and other stuff. A few weeks ago, I got a request to approve a plasma screen (why they would need a plasma screen I have no idea). But after months and months of replying, telling people they had the wrong email address, I finally gave in and responded with 'I have no issue with that'. So, I can only assume some field location now has a nice new plasma screen. :D

Bank people who are collecting probably are listening to the message and writing your name down as a possible alias for Jose. Heck, one day you might answer the door and find some collector looking for Jose.
