Nascar returns to Daytona Beach today for the annual July Firecracker 400 race. I'm looking forward to a great race and am anticipating how the new bump drafting rules will affect the race. I hope yesterday's race isnt an indication of how today will be (Earnhardt Jr lead 88/100 with 3 lead changes). Here's to a grat race kicking off what I hope is a great holiday weekend.:)

I don't follow Nascar very closely, so I hadn't heard about the new bump drafting rules. Can you give a brief run-down?

Brian - as I understand it, they've declared the entire Daytona track a "no zone", meaning bump drafting will be penalized. Back in February, there were certain areas where it was okay (the back straightaway IIRC) and the rest where it was verboten.

Carl Edwards ran afoul of the rule last night & was penalized one lap after causing Micheal Waltrip to crash.

edit to add: based on some of the comments from the announcers, I'm guessing that I misunderstood a discussion on one of the talking head shows earlier in the weekend & that the bump drafting is still allowed away from the turns.

This race should always be ran on the 4th, during daylight. That is all.

Oh, and Buddy Baker should always have to drive this car in the race:

Why? I like the new scheduling. On July 4th during the day, I'm out and about. Plus, these guys (and the crews) will usually get it off as well (so they spend time with the family and kids).

Because you should always watch the race while cooking on the grill on an extremely hot day. That is just right.

This car would do, too:

Seems like DEI spent all their test time and R&D money on the Busch series car.

Speaking of R&D cars ... Greg Sacks should always be allowed to drive an R&D car in the Firecracker 400.

Boris Said may actually win this one!

Said winning this would be pretty close to the upset that Sacks victory was too, so it'd be appropriate to have it happen in this race.

Come on Boris.

Kurt Busch needs to pick someone and stay behind them.

Why not let them run to the finish line?

True.

And yet another anti-climatic finish because of the damn frozen field rule :(

Congrats to Boris Said, who has gotten a ton of mileage out of the "Sell more cases, run more races" comment he made yesterday.

Why was the caution brought out anyways?

Wanna bet that NASCAR makes a "don't go in the crowd" rule after this?

And whoever has been giving PR lessons to Said has done a great job.

I see Jeff Gordon to getting married again. Hope he gets a pre-nup this time.
