Ok, so in the data entry system we use there is a field for "Name" which has two sub-fields. One of our people was entering the first name in the first field so it looked like this:
JOHN/SMITH
So, I told her something like this: "Sorry, I guess nobody explained this to correctly. From here on out put the last name in the first column. It will make things easier for all of us."
This morning I come in to discover that she has been entering names like this:
SMITH/JOHN SMITH
I don't know whether to laugh or cry. And I REALLY don't know how to correct this with a straight face.

Please don't cause problems. :)
Man, that's a bit, um, slow.
Send a memo on the correct way to do it and let the co-workers call her/him out.

I thought sure this was going to be about something entirely different.

Wow...if she worked her, they make her a manager. They like to do that so she has no real day-to-day responsibilities and can screw up less things.

This is the funniest sentence I've read today.

Entry fields where you just have to know to enter it last name then first name? Seems kinda of odd... definitely leaves the system open to a user entering data in the way that you mentioned.

NO
Then I definately don't want her working me.

I agree, it's a bit of an odd system. And it's also possible that I'm really bad at explaining things. But I think this really takes a special kind of stupidity.

That was my thought too. If the fields aren't clearly labeled, it does leave things open for interpretation. I would presume that while Last Name before First Name is intuitive, data entry sheets aren't always ordered in that manner.

Nah.
The special kind is required when the fields are clearly labeled and they still do what yours did.

See, I would call that laziness. This is a case where she was presented with a puzzle, and had to solve it, and came up with something so silly that I'm actually worried about whether I will be able to talk to her without laughing.

If that's the kind of solution she comes up with, the humor will probably go over her head. If she's not hot, I'd fire her.

Bring it on JimGa.
By the way, I don't have hiring/firing power, at least officially, but ... she is fired. I didn't even realize but she was fired yesterday. Today the ad was in the paper and there has been a parade of attractive young latin women coming into my office with resumes.
It's been a good day.

I would, but the joke had nothing to do with you or the situation, but rather another situation that your comment reminded me of. And that would have sidetracked your thread sure as shootin'.

Sign spotted driving through the country today, along a highway with passing dashes and a solid line.
"Do not pass when the solid line is on your side"
Umm.....DUH.
