What is "Ambition"?

In the coming years, I believe my company may be expanding thus opening up duplicate positions in other areas that I deem "not too far from home" to rule out. However, should an opportunity arise it would boild down like this:

Initially a probable pay cut but instead of 100% commission it would be about 50-60% of today's pay in guaranteed salary (bonuses on top).

Probably LESS job security in that front line sales people are always needed and are paid only when revenue is generated.

Management positions that dont work out are usually fired and NOT demoted.

Possibly a future promotion or promotions to eventually make more guaranteed money but have 500% more pressure and responsibility and possibly less job security.

I would definitely have to move at least 2 hours from my comfort zone.

I would no longer be able to work 50/50 with my best friend and partner of 22 years....he may earn promotion as well but probably in another city in the same state.




Keeping in mind that nothing has been offered at all, is it ambitious to want to climb the corporate ladder OR is it ambitious to want to make more money NOW? Want more Job security?

ability to have an effect on the things that frustrate me at my current level

eventually more money which is important

eventually more status which is un-important (to me)

more responsibility

guaranteed pay

They're both ambitious. The important thing is to decide what is more important to you.

I don't think you're talking about ambition, anyway. You're talking about goals. Ambition is the energy, drive and mindset one uses (or doesn't) to achieve one's goals.

What's the more important goal to you? Being a more-or-less independent operator, with 100% of the risk, but 100% of the payout? Being more of a "power-broker", with a guaranteed salary, but the additional part of your salary more dependent on the performance of your team? Or even just inhabiting a job that is a means to an end for your life and/or lifestyle?

Ask yourself two questions:

1. How do you want to live your life?
2. How does a job fit into that?

Work up from there.

Do you feel like you are missing something currently? Would this move give you more satisfaction in your job and in your life? Are you in an economic situation that you don't like and do you think a move might help that?

It seems like you are not interested in advancement just for the sake of advancement, so you have to ask yourself if a move would really make things better. Consider quality of life from a financial standpiont, and time standpoint, and a stress-management standpoint. If you are comfortable with life now, a change may not be necessary. If you think a move could put you in that comfort zone, then go for it.
