I'm in need of some advice. First of all, I need some software that can convert DVR-MS files (the ones that windows media center records off of TV) to a usable file type like avi or mpeg or whatever. I also need said software that is easy to use to edit out commercials and such. Anyone have something to suggest?

Not sure on the first one. For an easy editor, you can try the Microsoft Movie Maker that is probably free on your computer, or I sugest you try the demos (free download) for:

Uulead
Pinnacle
Sony Movie Maker

They're all fairly straightforward and run $50-100. If you need more features than what they provide you're looking at Vegas or Adobe Pro which are much more expensive and have much more difficult learning curves.

thanks for the links. those programs didnt work for me, but led me to a program called VideoReDo, which loads the dvr-ms file, scans for commercials and marks them so I can easily cut, then saves to mpg. whoooo

yeah, meant to say that when i was playing around with that format it didn't work for me either, but they work for my sister's computer (go figure). Thankfully my HTPC saves in MPEG then autoconverts to avi.
