I'm considering getting this game because I'm looking toward a story driven single-player game (getting a little tired of WoW-after 1.5 yrs) but I am concerned about the fighting. I'm not a big fan of 1st person shooters and it looks similar to that. Can anyone who has played the game elaborate further for me?
Thanks

Capital, slightly off-topic, but if you haven't played KOTOR or KOTOR II, they're right what you're looking for. Very story driven, RPG's - only one's I play. If you have, ignore this post. :D

KOTOR 2's ending is severely lacking however. There is a restoration project which is about 80% done restoring the content.

As far as the original question, I'm not a big fan of First Person Shooters, but I do like Oblivion. I fight most effectively in 1st person mode, but the game also has a 3rd person view. Basically, there is a button to block attacks, and you can do a few different swings depending upon your skill with the weapon type you are using. You can also use bows for long range attacks as well as Magic for long range attacks. Not sure what else to elaborate on, but will be glad to answer specific questions.

I don't like most FPS style games, but I didn't mind Oblivion. The combat seemed pretty straightforward and while it was a little hectic at times, overall it wasn't too much of an overload for me (and I'm an old man).

The fighting is very easy compared to a normal FPS. It's First-Person perspective, but it's not nearly as intense as the typical FPS.

And I second the KOTOR suggestions for story-driven RPGs. Oblivion is very open ended and I wouldn't exactly call it "story driven".

Oblivion is massive in scope. You won't be sorry going with it.

Thanks for all of the responses. Bee and Sabotai's responses help. I was concerned that since it was a first-person perspective that the fighting would be like a normal FPS. The intensity of those is not my cup of tea.

I played the entire first KOTOR and thought it was great. I only played about 1/4 of KOTOR 2 and then I think WoW and other text based sports sims started calling.

I think Oblivion may be the game as I wait for the BBCF addition and Jim's new game. It doesn't appear that the fighting will be extremely strenuous.

damn good game...I'm level 10 right now and having a blast playing it, if you get the pc version, there are plenty of user made addons too...well worth the money.

KotOR was awesome. KotOR II, not so much.

Oblivion combat was, imho, way to easy unless there were 4 of them (them being whatever there was at the time) or something (maybe too much kick-ass magic going on). That said, it was still lots of fun.

One of the things I liked about Oblivion was the adjustable difficulty slider. The thing about Oblivion was that your character's skills play such a big role in determining how difficult or easy the game plays. I'm sure most people just played the game at one setting, but the option to adjust it worked well for me. My character was combat oriented, so every few levels I'd adjust the difficulty slider up a little and it kept the game challenging to me.

Oblivon is the best game I have played in years.

I just bought the game last night and played for about two hours. I am at the end of the sewer where I have to pick my character. I want to play a magic user/but I'm considering a magic/blade combo. Magic for distance and blade when then are close by. Does that seem like a reasonable character set?

So far the game looks extremely nice and I haven't even reached a city. Since I don't play many FPS, using the mouse in conjuction with the normal WASD keys will take some getting used to.

Save the game before you choose. That way if you want to restart with a different character, you don't have to go through the tutorial again - you can just reload that save game and pick a different character.

But the magic/blade combo is what I went with too and it has worked out well so far.

Is there a way to name your saves. It appears that it just selects a file name. I am running the latest patch with no mods.

KWhit...if you remember...what 7 skills did you pick?

There is a character leveling faq at gamefaqs.com that I recommend reading.

Since you level based on how quickly you increase your primary skills, it is a good idea to set you primary skills to those that you won't use very much. This way, you can control how you level. If you pick primaries that you don't use very much, you use them when you are ready to level up.

Each skill has a corresponding attribute. When you level, the attributes you can increase are based on the skills that you have increased since the last time you leveled. Every skill has a corresponding attribute. Every 2 times you increase a skill, you're allowed +1 for its corresponding attribute. There is a max of +5 for an attribute per level.

The faq can explain it much better than I can. I strongly recommend reading it. It will help you tremendously.

Hmmm.... If memory serves...

Blade
Destruction
Restoration
Armorer (I wouldn't choose this one next time though - it can cause you to level up too quickly)
Security
Block
Light Armor

Note that I am not a min/maxer. I'm sure there are better builds, but this has fit my play style pretty well.

Ditto on both points. The first character I beat the game with specialized in heavy armor, blade, and destruction magic along with some other things.

So far I picked a Breton for my race...since I wanted to primarily use magic. There didn't seem like a good magic/malee class (which I guess really makes sense).

The more I look at the FAQ...thanks Spleen...I should have taken Dark Elf because of the Destruction/Blade combo bonus. I wonder if I can change my class before leaving the sewer. I'm at work so I don't have it in front of me but I know it gave me the option to change quite a bit...but race may not be one of them.

Yes, I think you can change class/race etc. before leaving the sewer. And I went with Dark Elf for the same reasons you mention.

You can name your save by pulling up the console (hit ~) and typing "save <filename>" instead of using the menu system. At least I think that is the command.

I'm playing this now too. Picked that lizard race and a Thief as my sign and skill set...

Has anyone used a thief in this game? If so, what's the difficulty and fun level involved? :)

I had a thief character as my second character and it was very fun. There are some really great quests if you do an assassin type character and join the Dark Brotherhood. The only thing that annoyed me about my thief was what seemed to be the psychic ability of the guards, but there's a mod out there that reduces that down quite a bit.

I just started playing, and when I got to the city I tried killing a sleeping couple so that I could have their house (this IS how it works right? Or will they come back later?). Not only were they about to kill me (damn strong civilians!), but a guard came in to arrest me... I thought that was weird considering I was on the 2nd floor in their bedroom. Could the guard hear their screams or something from the outside?

My understanding on the guard thing is they have a chance to sense things within a certain radius (I think it's based on your sneak vs some ability they have to sense things..although I'm sure line of sight and things like come into play as well). The radius on default is quite large and the mod I mentioned earlier reduces that to some extent. At least that's the way I understood it worked...I could be wrong. Anyway, when I was playing the thief, I kept having guards discovering me when they shouldn't have. I installed the mod and it made it much better. That was a while ago, so I'm guessing they've improved the mod even more since then.

This is not how it works.

There is 1 house in each town that I believe you can buy. You need to talk to the right person to get them to sell it to you.

I believe there is a faq about it over at gamefaqs.com.
