View Full Version : Bloody Marys

My wife is gone for a week, and I've promised her that when she gets back, I will stop drinking entirely. I don't really drink that often - maybe 2-3 times a week; however, we've noticed that when I do drink, the amount I consume has increased dramatically over the past few months. Since I don't really mind too much, I plan on following through with the quitting.

Anyway, I plan on going out with a mini-bang. Before she gets back, I really want to try a lot of the things I've never had. One of those things is a Bloody Mary. I've always wanted to try one, but I'm not sure what the best "recipe" would be.

Any suggestions?

No more drink? Isn't that against the Michigan State Graduate Code of Conduct? I am pretty sure it is.

I mean, how are you going to drown your sorrows come this October 7?

German Chocolate cake, vanilla ice cream, and a large glass of milk? :(

Clamato juice. Vodka. Pepper. Tabasco. Stir with a celery stalk.

Don't stop drinking.

My wife loves 'em, so I'm somewhat familiar with them (even if I'd rather drink horse piss than anything with freakin' tomato juice in it).

Here's pretty much the standard recipe:
1 1/2 ounces (1 jigger) vodka
1/2 cup tomato juice
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
Worcestershire sauce to taste
Tabasco to taste
1 celery stick for garnish
1 lemon wedge for garnish

Combine the vodka, the tomato juice, the lemon juice, the Worcestershire sauce, the Tabasco, 1 cup ice cubes, and salt and pepper to taste, shake the mixture well, and strain it into a tall glass filled with ice cubes. Garnish the Bloody Mary with the celery stick and the lemon wedge.

Now, that said, best I can tell the "right" Bloody Mary is pretty much a personal thing. My wife hates celery, likes the rim salted, and a few olives thrown in for flavor. The lemon juice is optional, and she prefers a lime wedge for garnish. When I make them from scratch (as opposed to using one of the pre-mixed set ups) I usually do a little heavier on the worchestire than most people & a little lighter on the tabasco, adding some ground black pepper to make up for the missing kick. You can also subsitute one of the spicy tomato juices & ease up on the spicer stuff, or even the spicy V-8 instead of tomato.

You could probably take that basic recipe & adjust to your own tendencies toward preferences & get a passable idea of what you haven't tried before.

Ok, thanks for the suggestions.

Since the basic recipe sounds pretty set-in-stone, I'm off to the store. I'll report back on the taste later.

I'm going to have to try something different every day for the next week, so give me those suggestions too.

1 bunch English Protestants (a blend of social classes works best, but be sure there are plenty of nobles)
1 Catholic queen of England, preferably named Mary

Mix* and enjoy.

The best bloody right there imo. Try it with lime flavored vodka. Yum.

Just out of curiosity, why not just scale the drinking back to maybe just one night a week, or only on weekends, and try to moderate it?

Lady H_B and I recently implemented such a program. She's heading back to school and wanted to stop drinking while she studies for her math placement test (it's amazing how little algebra and pre-calculus one retains after not using it for 10+ years). I agreed to join her, but stipulated that I would still drink on the weekends. Seems reasonable enough. Besides, a fella could stand to stop consuming all those extra calories each night.

I prefer absolute Peppar or some Dave's Insanity in mine.

Nothing like waking up to eat breakfast at 8am with 3 or 4 Bloodys to start your Sunday. I love restaurants that do this.

I don't think I'd be much help here. I keep it simple, lots of vodka mixed into a little bit of any juice.

Don't drink so much you forget to stop by the Drunk Guy thread, Schmidty!

Two reasons:

1. I've tried that twice before when my drinking got a little heavy, but it only worked for a few months before the drinking slowly grew to excess again.

2. My biological dad is an alchoholic, and I sure as hell don't want to end up like him. I love my family too much to take that risk.

Now it's time to make that first Bloody Mary!!!!! :D

Hehe. Upon looking at that again, it is pretty funny. :)

Ok, I just made the drink.....and it's fantastic. I've already had two big ones. I mean really big ones. I'm making dinner right now, so I won't get too toasted.

Here's what I used (I veered a tiny bit from the suggestions):

V8 juice / Clamato
Cheap Vodka (Gordons)
Lemon juice
Worcestershire sauce
Salt / Pepper
Iguana Radioactive Sauce

The second time, I tried it with olives, and it was even better.

Woah, it's hitting me harder by the moment. I need to finish dinner and eat.

A well made Bloody Mary is a thing of beauty, and I'm in the JimG camp of tomota juice haters. Mine have gotta have liberal amounts of Worchestshire, Tobasco, olive, and lime...

I just eyeballed it, but it was about 3/4 juice, 1/4 vodka (probably too much). I added like a 3-4 dashes each of worcestershire sauce, and hotsauce, and juice squeezed a little lemon juice into it. I shook it up in a tupperware container with ice, and dumped it into a glass.

Oh so good. :)

Bloody Mary's are some of the best drinks ever...especially at 9 in the morning while watching football on Sunday. I like a lot of spice to mine, and I usually blend tobasco, worcestire sauce and horseradish together before adding it to the drink. Mmmmmmmmm.

It don't matter what proportions you use, as long as you don't waste and you try hard to keep gettin it right.

I had a friend when I was in grade 1 or 2 that believed this soooo much. He had a hook in his drawer and always told stories about how he got her a couple of times in the mouth already and needs to finish it off... he looked so convinced that he slightly convinced me that the whole thing was real. :D

I'm still ok. I've had one vodka and coke since, but I've also had 2 pork chops, mashed potatoes and gravy, and broccoli with melted cheese.

I'm just where I want to be. :)

I might have one more Bloody Mary or two tomorrow, but I'd really like some suggestions as to what type of drink I should have tomorrow, preferrably vodka-based. I'll have money on friday, and will be able to get more exotic then, but give me ideas for tomorrow now.

i harken back to the stories of David Crosby agreeing to go to treatment if he was allowed to cook up on the plane. One last hurrah. This is a bit less dramatic (as I see myself doing similar things) but sorta sad too? Perhaps it's the messload of Jameson I drank tonight. ;)

Please get it right. You just described a Bloody Caesar, not a Mary (difference being the Clamato over the tomato juice) Some Worestershire and celery salt should be added to this. And try a spicy, marinated green bean rather than a celery stalk.

I would agree that it by far better than a Bloody Mary. In most parts of Canada, it is by far more popular than the Bloody Mary. Invented by a bartender in Calgary some 30-40 years ago I think. Maybe longer?
