Calling All FOFC'ers - Battlefield 1942

With the talk of Battlefield 1942 recently, Travis and I thought that we should start an FOFC clan. Anyone who has played Battlefield knows that the key to the game is teamwork. As such, we are looking for anyone who owns the game, and wants to start a team of FOFC'ers.

Depending on the interest, we could have a team of 12 or 16, or maybe two teams of 8. We could get some practice in during certain agreed upon times, and learn to play as a team...then maybe participate in some clan battles.

btw, if you want, when/if ;) you sign up, mention what your preference is as far as what kind of character you prefer to use (sniper, mechanic, infantry, etc) so everybody can get a feel for what the group would be made up of, thanks.

As many of you folkers know by now, I own an internet cafe. This is of course my lead into the following: I can set up servers and gather up dozens of children at a time. If we get enough interest here, I can set up scrimmages between just about anyone. And dont let the smooth taste fool you. I will blast your ass at this game for it is my favorite shooter. I love this game, and I LOVE FREEDOM FORCE!!

I play as a scout, unless its a close combat map.

This is why I'm buying the expansion tonight...but I've read not to download the new patch...it's got a lot of problems (1.3) either stick with 1.2 or 1.25 (road to rome is 1.25).

Sound clippings, a big cheat (not that any of us would use it) can be enabled by the console, and if you downloaded 1.3 before adding on Road to Rome, you may have to reinstall everything...

It's pretty much a WWII game with a co-op mode that is fantastic. You pick from I believe 5 character types (scout, infantry, etc) and play on a map (not sure how many are out there now, there are quite a few) on either the Allied side or for the Axis. With the full version of the game, there are different multiplayer games (conquest, capture the flag, etc) as well. It's a 1st person shooter that also lets you control a wide variety of weapons, vehicles and other assorted goodies (land mines is a fun one).

If you're interested, head over to eagames.com and check out the Battlefield 1942 demo's. I tried the multiplayer one (you're limited to playing one map/conquest style) but it gives you a good feel for what the game is about.

I would love to be apart of a clan... I just recently purchased the game and I am still feeling my way around... I mostly go as a medic or engineer and often fly fighters on the maps that utilize them...

and I have upgraded to 1.3

maybe the cheat it allows is why I keep getting my arse kicked...

I'm playing on 1.3 too, but haven't even done multiplayer with it yet, been too busy playing the new maps on the single player campaign.

We could go with the mutliplayer demo for practise until everybody has the same version running as well (is everybody getting the Road to Rome expansion?)

Not sure, biggest problem is getting a server that will either hold all of us, or one we can use ourselves, if I find something, I'll post it here, if not, until we get one to ourselves, we can always just try to find one big enough so that we can just get on and play for now. Once I'm done dinner (hour or so), I'll be ready to play.

Just to let you guys know, I'm in right now on Weedkiller's server (think the full name is something like Weedkiller's Uberserver V1.3 or something similar). It's a Stalingrad map and when I went it, there was just me on a good server. I'm Delta in the game.

Still on, and it's called WeedKillers Uberserver 1.3, it's on the Wake map right now, though it was on Stalingrad before, so I don't know how often it switches maps.

Damn, I didn’t get to play last night until 10:00 (Pacific Time). Anywho… DO you guys know why ½ the servers I fail to get in? It gets pretty frustrating when it takes about 5 min for the game to restart and then I cross my fingers and hope I’m able to get in the next server. I spent close to an hour trying to get in a server.

Do you have the newest patch?
Do you have the expansion, you will be kicked if you don't have the new maps and the server you are on has them?
Did you try to get into a slow server or one that was near maximum, sometimes I get kicked from those because someone beats me into the game quicker.

I have V1.3 but don’t have the expansion (yet). I was trying to play maps that were on the original (Midway, Omaha, ect.) and there was plenty of room for more players (10 players out of 32). If I remember the pings were pretty low.

I did get on a server and finished a game but then it kicked me off after playing only 1 game. I thought after a game is finished it would just reload another game?

Hopefully I will figure out which servers are “good” and which ones I can’t attempt to play.

What would be great is if we can get an FOFC server up and going so that we all have a place to meet, and we will not have to run to the board and put up posts of "I am in here" all the time.

This sounds like a lot of fun, and I'd definetly be interested in joining but for some reason I cannot find the demo to this game. I went on the EAgames site and found downloads for the patches but no demo.

Any help guys? If I like the game enough I'm not hesitant to go out tonight and buy it.

Let me hunt for a server, the NVIDIA's are big, we should go for something more in the 12 to 24 range, not the 32 to 64...I usually play the big ones...I liked that Weedkiller but I don't thin it has RtR maps...

I'll be back on that site at 8, and it's moderated, no language, but it's a good trusty server...I recommend it...It popped up when I put weedkiller in the server filter...hope you guys find it, see you at eight..

remember, no language or tk (i don't think you'd guys do this) or you get banned...

I was playing on a sniper's only board...Clefan, do you have cable modem, I have cable, I could try to set up a game, I couldn't find yours...otherwise it's my recommendation for everyone to find a public server, that has decent pings...and go there, we can play as a team, and protect from cheats and tk's...I'll be back later tonight...sorry this isn't going so well...

I'll get the dedicated server going again. If it doesn't work for some reason we can pick another "dedicated" server for us to play on.. Sound Good??

I'm on the FOFC server... I dedicated it so you don't have to go to gamespy and use the Battlefield 1942 servers.

That qould be 10:00 Est time. I have a flag football game at 4:00 (my time) and should be done by 5:00. But then I have to do a couple errons so that's why I'm thinking 7:00. BUT I may be dont by 6:00 or 6:30...

Couldn't get it to work -

I found a couple decent servers:

1) MidgetFarm
2)epldt-vitro

Try the first one and if that's full try the second one.

If you do get the server going, try doing a co-op game (4 allies [or however many FoF'ers we're going to have] against 8 axis or some such number) on Market Garden, very good map.

I was on MidgetFarm for about an hour and 1/2. It was lag free and had 10-15 people on it at all times. I'm wondering why you guys couldn't find it :confused:

I got on teh MidgetFarm server right after you posted it last night and I ran around for 15 minutes with noone else on the server. I then went back to my usual server "Lightspeed dual 1.3 amd" 64 player server.

We need to find a place to be the official FOFC server, so we do not have to run here to post the different server names every night!

The bad thing is we need a dedicated machine to be a server, and according to the Battlefield web site, you need a pretty good machine to be a dedicated server.


How many users can I have on my server? How big of a connection do I need?
These are rough estimates, err on the high side, and aim for best performance (sure you could get more on less but that's when you get laggy/crummy servers):

'How big' primarily depends on bandwidth. A *good* DSL connection (1.5/768) can handle about 8-10 players MAX. Slower DSL (such as residential 1.5/256) would only be able to support about 4 players at best (same for cable as that is usually 256 to 384 on the upload). If you have a 1 MB SDSL connection (or 1 MB on your cable upload) you should be able to support a 12 player server

As a rough rule of thumb, each player requires anywhere from 50 to 80 KB/sec. You need a *minimum* of a T1 to support a 16 player server, dual T1 (3 MB) for a 32 player server, and just over 6 MB for a 64 player server (although that can hit up to 7 MB/sec depending on how many people are connecting and downloading maps). Basically you need some serious bandwidth for anything over a 16 player server and it should be dedicated hardware (i.e. it's only a server, no GUI or other apps running on it).

As far as the hardware, here is my rough estimate/guide based upon my actual experiences:
16 Players = 1 GHz/128 MB RAM
32 Players = 1.5+ GHz/256 MB RAM
48+ Players = 2+ GHz/512 MB RAM

Anybody still interested, I think if we do buddy lists through AIM, ICQ or MSN, we can get things organzied a little quicker. However, I notice that I'm still the only one to post, so I'm assuming that you all just hate me and such ;)

I think that the problem some of us have (at least myself) is that I often don't know when I will be on until I am on...if that makes any sense...

In the absence of having an actual dedicated FOFC server, maybe we should have a list of two or three servers that we can usually be found on, so that we do not always have to coordinate here.
