View Full Version : Tattoo or Piercing?
Farrah Whitworth-Rahn

The She-Rahn is turning 30 in September.
To mark this momentous occassion I have been contemplating getting a tattoo or getting something pierced. Inspired by MacroGuru's new tat thread, I thought I would see what all you FOFC folks think. Should I get a tattoo? A piercing? Both? And where?
I currently only have my ears pierced. I don't have any tattoos. And unfortunately, my profession frowns upon visible intentional body mutilations so everything must be restricted to my torso.
So what do you think?

Piercings on women? Way.

A tat is more permanent but IMO means much more and is much more customizable. If you have something specific in mind I say get the tat.

Agreed completely. My bosses would wet their pants if I came in with a nose ring. I'm considering a nipple piercing or the belly button. But like Rizon said, I'm not sure I have the stomach to show it off.
What does Arlie think?
Arlie, quite frankly, thinks I'm nuts. He doesn't understand why I feel the need to do this to my body. I think he's kind of used to the way it looks now.
He is very much anti-nipple piercings. But, I was very much anti-kids until I got pregnant. I think he might change his mind if it's done the right way.

Please don't take what I'm about to say the wrong way - you asked for opinions, so I'll give you mine.
I think disregarding your husband's opinion on this is a major mistake. Personally, I find pierced nipples to be suggestive of a certain type of woman, and my wife doesn't fit that mold. Is it her body and can she do what she wants with it? Sure. But every time I see that nipple ring I'm going to mentally wrinkle my nose in disgust because of my personal sentiments about it.
I take it you would feel comfortable with Arlie getting something/anything of his own? Say, a mohawk?

I don't know... It's her body, so she should ultimately choose what to do with it, husband-be-damned. Obviously if it's something permanent like a tattoo than I could see where the hubby's view would carry a little more weight.
But for something like a nipple ring? Where's the harm? Maybe Arlie doesn't like them now or doesn't like them on other women, but once his wife gets one he thinks "Wow, that's kinda cool" and everyone's happy. Or, he thinks "Eh, not my favorite thing in the world, but I can live with it." Again, She Rahn is happy with her 30th birthday gift to herself and Arlie keeps on keepin' on. If it turns out that Arlie is all "I can't look at you! You're hideous with that metal loop through your nipple!" , then the solution is easy: remove the nipple ring.

It's not that I'm disregarding his opinion, I just think he'll change his mind. But I understand your point. Besides, after a certain amount of time I could take the piercings out if he ever wanted to see me topless.
I am perfectly fine with most anything Arlie could possibly want to do to his body. If he wanted a nipple piercing, I'll help pick out the body jewelery. If he wanted breast implants...then we'd need to talk.

There is the ideas I don't hear enough of. Instead of permanently marking your body, get a temp like what you want. He can tell you if he likes it, and you can always change it. I can't comprehend why anybody would want permanent marking on their bodies when there are good alternatives available.

No risk? There is almost always at least a miniscule amount of risk even at a cleanly place unless the place is using a quality autoclave or using fresh equipment every single time (which I've honestly never heard of a tattoo place doing either of those things.)

The doctor will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that nipple piercings have been linked to increased risk of breast cancer, and tattoos have been connected to the spread of prions. Whether everything is clean or not makes no difference, as regards those risks.

There has been some evidence about nipple piercings and breast cancer, but it's still under some debate. As far as Prions, those bastards have even survived Autoclaving! Scary thought actually, and yes, they could potentially be spread by the equipment Tattoo artists used.

So, being opened minded means you cannot have an opinion? We must conform to your non-conformity or we are "too conservative?" If something is ugly, it is ugly. If you want to be ugly, more power to you. If my wife wanted a tat, I'd tell her what I thought about (and she'd tell me if I were to want one). That's not "conservative" it is "communication."

farrah, i say go to town. if you want it, absolutely do it. a piercing can be taken out. and even tattoos can be removed (its a pain, sure, but its still fixable).

i openly admit my conservatism as far as this topic goes....i voted firmly for neither one....i used to work with a girl that had like 6 tats and 13 piercings...nose, lip, eyebrow, and various places that were not visible...my personal opinion was that she always looked a bit trashy, and was basically detracting from her otherwise rather nice physicaly attrativeness....she showed up a wedding one night with all the piercings taken out and was all dolled up, and myself and the rest of the guys from work all basically stood there with out mouths open at how hot she looked...i just think a natural/untatooed/unpierced woman is much more attractive.

I will speak up here...
I am a professional trainer, have been Director of IT and Senior Systems Analyst for several companies...All my tats are covered by work clothes, if I was in my work clothes and you ran into me, you would not even know I had them.
I for one, am a big fan of individuality and of people expressing it. I think Tattoos are part of that, and as long as you get something that truly means something to you, and isn't a design picked out of one of their books, then by all means get it.
Where you get is your own decision. I have chosen my Calf and my left arm..my wife, chose the bullseye spot on the back, I at first was going your putting it where?
I have to truly say, it looks amazing there, and I don't think it would fit anywhere else on her body and look as good as she has it.
Oh, and she is starting to run her own real estate business, and has to look professional constantly....

She turns 30 this year, and you know what, she is so into working out and hitting the gym constantly, I don't think it will be any different 20 years from now...it will be when she can't do the gym anymore that I think it will be the problem, mine will be the same way at that point to...so I honestly do not care. :)

Only a select few are allowed admittance,
You weren't supposed to tell. ;)
Schmidty, the Emperor of Coolness, would get all over me if I state my opinion. But as usual, I agree with my fellow geriatric, WSUCoug. As what to do, I go along with a snatch patch or a mohawk. That would be cool (literally and figuratively).

But that's a just a guess. I may be wrong.

By the way, I am the furthest thing from cool that I can think of. I even wear socks with sandals.

I have 3 small tats on my ankle and feet, and I love all of them...they are very inconspicuous and most people don't notice them at all, even when I have sandals on.
I got a belly ring for my 30th b'day...kept it for about 4 months and then got tired of it always hurting and getting infected...unless you wear low rise jeans, your waistband is going to be rubbing against it, and if Jackson is anything like Anthony was at that age, full on contact during playing and hugs is very frequent and will not help the piercing heal.
I voted for a tat...what about one on the small of your back? That to me is even more "hidden" than your shoulder, which could show when you were wearing a tank top or a halter type top. Find a tattoo parlor in your area and go in once or twice before you make up your mind...look through their design books and talk to the artists about customizing something for you.

I haven't read this entire thread. I don't know how you feel about tattoos, them being very permanent. I hestitate to say to get a tattoo unless you have a design in mind already. Not that there's anything REALLY wrong with flash, but I've always been of the mind that if you're going to put something permanent on your body, you should have a say in how it's designed. My 2 tats (so far, more in work) were designed by my brother for me (with my input...suffice it to say that drawing a stick figure is tough for me). Do you have an idea in mind for a design?
As for piercings, they're almost as addictive as ink. I've had multiple holes in each ear (now I have two holes in each lobe and one cartilage piercing in my right upper ear), a nipple piercing, and a tongue piercing. The nipple and tongue are now gone, for their own reasons:
1. The nipple piercing...well, the consensus amongst piercing afficianados is that most people eventually LOSE sensitivity in their pierced nipple, after experiencing a bit of time with heightened sensitivity. Some people continually get more and more sensitive. I fell into the latter category, where my nipple would be hard walking from the bathroom back to my room after a shower. Eventually I got to a point (I guess it was about 4.5 years after I had it done) where it was hard all the time, to a point of being painful. Of course, at about the time I took it out, I cracked a rib because I'd been on crutches and managed to fall chest-first into a movie theater arm-rest (some parent let their kid sit in the aisle on the stairs, and I didn't see the kid, so my crutching and percocet'd self didn't see the kid, fell over him into the arm-rest), and before I'd known I'd actually cracked the rib, I thought the pain might have been coming from my nipple being constantly hard.
Of course, I loved the damn thing, I mostly regret taking it out.
2. Tongue piercing...that was not out by my choice. I had an anesthesiologist give me a drug I'm allergic to. I took out my tongue stud for the surgery, and after the surgery, I didn't regain consciousness until the next day more or less, and I was still having some breathing problems, and oddly enough, the hospitals are kind of silly about allowing you to put things back in your mouth that they think can interfere with your breathing (it doesn't).
I loved both piercings, and I especially miss the tonue piercing. I had it for just over 6 years when I had to take it out. Neither hurt per se. The tongue, they make you swish Listerine for like 60 seconds, that numbs you up pretty well. The nip, well, I think I was just on such an adrenaline rush. My piercer and I did some rhythmic breathing, the entire experience was actually sort of meditative. The biggest problem I ran into (literally) with my nip was that the night after I had it done, I somehow managed to walk breast-first into my bunk bed (I was in undergrad) and WOW did that hurt on a fresh piercing.
EDIT TO ADD: If you get a tongue piercing far enough back on your tongue, it's not noticeable unless you make it so. My folks didn't notice that I had my tongue done until I'd had it for over a year, and it turned out that the "easiest" way for them to see it was if I was standing and they were sitting (i.e. they were on a "lower" level than I was). Just saying that if you want to be professional, it IS possible to hide these things. An advantage of putting it farther back on your tongue is that it also doesn't mess with your talking as much. I didn't even have a pseudo-lisp. /edit
So yeah.
If you have a plan for a tattoo, and are ok with the permanancy, I'd go with that.
But piercings are great fun, too. Go for both, hell, you only turn 30 once!!! :)

Ummmmm wow....I am not weirded out by the fact that you have piercings and tats. I was just surprised on how much detail you gave over the nipple piercings. I felt like I was reading an erotic letter or something.
But I feel really bad when I read that you fell down and cracked a rib on a movie theater arm rest. I just never heard of that before. And with you other recent bumps and bruises, I keep imagine a tall, clumsy, bandaged rocket scientist with a very hard nipple and a tongue ring caught between her teeth. I'm sorry, but I can't help it. :D

The image of a tall, clumsy, bandage rocket scientist isn't far off (though happily, right now, I have no splints or braces or casts or crutches or anything).
I am neither embarassed nor ashamed of anything I've done to my body, in terms of piercings and tattoos. Before I took out my nip ring, I used to show it to anybody who asked. Just was trying to give Farrah an opinion of someone who's done more than most people usually do... :)

Reminded of a song that starts like this...
So long ago, I don't remember when
That's when they say I lost my only friend
Well they said she died easy of a broken heart disease
As I listened through the cemetery trees
I seen the sun comin' up at the funeral at dawn
The long broken arm of human law
Now it always seemed such a waste
She always had a pretty face
So I wondered how she hung around this place

Oh, and TK, I know way more about you than I ever thought I would. :p
Thinking about this over the weekend, I think I'm going to go with the trout option at this point. I'd like to nurse my next baby, and a nipple piercing will get in the way of that. And I really am torn on a tattoo. I don't think I should get one unless I feel strongly about doing so. Indecision would only lead to regret later, IMHO.
