The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees have a tentative deal to send Phillies right fiedler Bobby Abreu and pitcher Cory Lidle to New York ESPN.com's Jayson Stark and ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reported Sunday.

Stark reported the Yankees will send 18-year-old minor-league shrotstop C.J. Henry -- their No. 1 pick in 2005 -- and 27-year-old left-handed reliever Matt Smith. The Phillies will also pick one other minor-leauge player from an agreed-upon list, while the Yankees will take on responsibility for Abreu and Lidle's contracts. Abreu is owed $15 million for 2007 alone.

Abreu is hitting .277 with 8 home runs and 65 RBI in 99 games. He has a career batting average of .301 with 198 home runs and 841 RBI over 10 seasons.

Lidle, a right-hander, is 8-7 with a 4.74 ERA in 21 starts in 2006. In eight seasons he has a career mark of 78-69 with a 4.54 ERA.

Abreu was in the Phillies' starting lineup Sunday but was pulled for Shane Victorino 10 minutes before their game with the Florida Marlins.

They also had league spelled leauge at one point.

An intern breathlessly trying to scoop the world.

fiedler is in there, too.

I'd say any trade that gets you Bobby Abreu, Lidle AND Jay Fiedler is a great deal.

Considering this is a salary dump, I'm actually a bit happy that the Phillies are at least getting one good prospect.

And at some point, the Phillies will overpay him, too, leading to another salary dump!

Though you have to wonder about what the Yanks are thinking. They are 2nd in the majors in runs scored and they deal their biggest prospect for... a hitter?

Definitely looks like a done deal. Abreu is in the dugout and not in uniform and was going around to every player looking like he was saying his goodbyes.

They want to be 1st in scoring? Also, Lidle will at least eat up some innings.

Seems like there is still is big obstacle to overcome though. Abreu has a no-trade clause and wants his 2008 option picked up for $16 million to waive it.

"However, the Yankees are taking Abreu under the expectation that they will be paying only the $22 million still owed on his deal through 2007, and have told the Phillies to negotiate any deal required to waive the no-trade clause. It could be that Abreu receives a lump payment of $1 million to $1.5 million from the Phillies to accept the deal. "

It seems like a stretch to just assume that $1.5 million will make him give up a $16 million option.

This one seems oh so similar to the Carlos Lee trade. Obviously, it's not gonna hurt the team and will make them better, but is another bat really what the Yankees needed?

If you look at the caption under the picture of Abreu on the front page of ESPN.com, you'll see that Abreu must "wave" bye-bye to his no-trade clause in order to make the deal happen.

It's a done deal, no reason to speculate about no trade clauses at this point. He has already said his goodbyes to his teammates in the dugout and he wouldn't be doing that if he wasn't waving the clause.

Henry is not the best Yankee prospect, but Baseball America said that he was the best athlete in the system. It also sounds like he is not a great SS, so a position change may be in his future. Right now he is playing DH in rookie ball.

I agree it's probably a done deal. But if you were Abreu wouldn't you make the Yankees sweat a day to try and get them to pay that option? What's another $16 million to them?

He's probably more like their 5th-7th best prospect (conservative guess). Hughes and Tabata are considered #1 and #2.

DISCLOSURE STATEMENT: I am a Met fan, and know that the following discussion would apply to my team, as well as the Yankees.

These are the types of deals that bother me, because it's the kind that only about 3 teams in the league could afford to do. And when I say "this type," I mean where one team will get the player, and in exchange for paying his entire salary won't have to cough up anything of high value. It's screwing over other teams on two fronts:

1. The high-revenue team can add the all-star, without any concern as to the financials of the deal.
2. As a result of complying with (1), they do not have to give up their best and brightest young players.

If anyone outside of the usual big spenders wanted Abreu, you can be sure that they would have had to give up one or two of their top guys, as it just wouldn't be financially feasible to acquire him in the manner that the Yankees did.

I thought Phillip Hughes was their biggest prospect? Anyways, I'm happy....seems like a solid trade for the phils.

Definitely a done deal, they just announced it on the Phillies local broadcast.

Coming from a Philliesfan (obviously), this deal isn't that great. Sure they dumped Abreu, but they should have dumped Lieber instead of Lidle. Lidle right now has more marketability, and they would have been able to get a legit prospect for him.

I'm happy that the salary is free - but I'm wondering who even wants to come here anymore. I think its also proven now that the way to win in today's MLB is to build through the farm, and the Phillies aren't getting the chips they need to do that.

how did the phils let abreu go and not get one of the yanks top 2-3 prospects? that just seems foolish

3 starters, young catcher, 3bman, now another corner OF. Also probably another closer. And a longterm solution at CF.

I don't see how ANYONE would take Burrell, outside of us picking up like 60% of the remaining contract. Either way, this team needs major changes, so I'd almost cut my losses and pay what they want.

I'd send Rowand back to CHI if they wanted him back. He's a class act, but a marginal player. He doesn't have any long term future here.

I would assume that it was because of the fact that he is owed so much money in the future and realistically only the Sox or Yanks could afford him.

A good utility IF would be nice as well. I'm not sure if Victorino is the long term answer in CF (if Rowand isn't re-signed).

Whats the story with Burrell?? I don't know all that much about him, except he destroys the Mets, but I thought he was a solid .280, 30-40 HR, 100+ RBI kind of guy, and still pretty young. Why has Philly given up on this guy already?

but i feel like (and maybe this is just me being biased) that if the Sox wanted him they would have had to give up a better prospect than the Yankees did. But maybe that's just me misreading the situation. Could the Sox really have gotten Abreu AND Lidle for a rookie-ball player and a MR plus a couple other midlevel guys?

just seems like a kind of..."gift" trade to me. *shrug*

It was a salary dump. They probably had no intentions at all of getting anything decent back, just looking to get his salary off their books.

Burrell is pretty soft mentally. He has periods where he looks like the guy back at Miami crushing the ball, then he has long stretches of futility where he bats .200 for a month at a time.

Like most Phillies, they aren't bad pieces, but they will never be the "go to guy". Abreu was a classic example of this, and Burrell is like this as well. Honestly, when Burrell is right, he's one of the better hitters in the game. Maybe he just needs a change of scenery.

He's also very underrated in the OF. His range is average, but his arm is great.

Burrell's guilty of making so much money and having unrealistic expectations set for him.

He is a career .258 hitter, averaging about 26 homeruns and 150 strikeouts per year, with no speed and little range in the outfield, making $10 million a year.

He also leads the league in strikeouts looking this season.

Oh, well then, now it all makes sense.

With you being a Mets fan, I can see how you may think he is a better player than he actually is, especially early in his career. Maybe that's what he needs, to play for the Mets. Maybe just being on the same field as them makes him better. Now if only that were true for the rest of the team (Phillies)....

At least the Braves won't be winning the division this season, so there is a VERY positive side to this season.

**** changed to hopefully clear up that I wasn't taking a shot at the Mets, but at my team instead
