I just caught this movie on DVD and am scratching my head wondering if I just saw a remake of An officer and a Gentleman or just a complete rip-off?

I mean everything that I remember seeing in An officer... is here in Annapolis. The roomates, the obstacle cource, the hard ass commander, the suicide, and the fight with the commander is all here. Even the damn guy getting the girl ending is there. I would hate to think what I would of been watching if they had not completely copied An Officer....Gentleman.

I hope that the people who made An Officer and a Gentleman received some sort of financial compensation for Annapolis, because if they didn't they were completly ripped off.

I haven't seen Anapolis, but just the trailer for it made me think it was an exact copy of An Officer...

Yah, I just watched it last night, and thought the same thing. Same story, minus three important things:
* The poignant backstory of the chick... we get one line about how she's representing girls because guys think girls are weak or some such tripe, as opposed to Debra Winger's decent job portraying a girl with no options out of her current life other than Richard Gere.
* Any depth in the protagonist. Richard Gere > Harry Osbourne.
* --And this is the most important thing -- "I got nowhere else ta goooooo!" Great line, great timing, great delivery.

Oh, and honorable mention goes to the lack of Lou Gossett Jr.'s crotch-kick.
