View Full Version : Songs You're Embarrassed to Admit You Like...

Blatantly ripped from Mike & Mike the other morning, when Eric "I-always-misspell his last name" and Buster Olney were hosting.

What song comes up on your iPod that you're ashamed to admit you have on there but you totally love? For example, Buster Olney had The Carpenters on his iPod.

Me, I have a lot of music that isn't exactly "hip," but the song I'm listening to often lately that is sort of embarrassing is Scooter's Ramp! (The Logical Song)

It's not really embarrassing, but it's kind of out there and makes people roll their eyes when I say I'm listening to it...I'm sure I have something worse on there, but right now, I'm listening to Scooter...

haha I have both The Carpenters and Neil Diamond on my iPod and I'm not ashamed to admit I love them both. I don't really feel shame about listening to music. It's not as if one goofy pop song is worse than another. It's all entertainment.

As far as what I usually get the most crap about when I tell someone I like them, I guess that would be Barry Manilow.

Or Billy Joel :)

Unfortunately, there's no single song on my iPod I can point to that I'm ashamed to admit that I have on there. There is a pretty wide swath.

First, "archiving" is a bit of a hobby of mine. I have over the years worked on converting my entire music archive to a digital format, starting with my first 45 ("Physical" by Olivia Newton John. As an archivist, my collection must be complete -- nothing can be left out.

That said, despite a nerdy obsession with Sweedish pop, my most embarrassing songs come from my troubled teen years, when I was a confused dateless loner. Given that fragile emotional state, especially considering that no one should be held responsible musically for what they do when they are 16, I think we should overlook my bizarrely large collection of '80s teen pop, headed by the illustrious Debbie "Deborah" Gibson.

Not a thing wrong with Neil Diamond.

For me...there are a couple of Barry Manilow songs I like. Same with Air Supply.

My greatest shame is probably Boyz II Men's cover of "Hard for me to say I'm Sorry".

A close second is "Living Thing" by ELO.

Of course, most people would probably think I should be embarrassed about 80% of the prog-rock on my iPod... ;)

I used to be embarrased that I liked Radiohead's "Creep". For some reason, I thought they were quite popular with the pre-teen girl crowd, for a long time.

Now? I don't know ... Modest Mouse, maybe. Or, for the jazz guys, Bix Beiderbeck.

Wham! was new wave? I always considered them bubble gum pop...

Embarassing songs - selected cuts off the Britney Spears greatest hits CD (I love listening to it at the beach for some reason), tons of super cheesy 80's pop (including Debbie Gibson, who I actually saw in concert when I was in high school...), and the Chipmunks Christmas CD :)

If you had to pick a Radiohead song to be embarrassed by, that's a good one--but why on earth would you be embarrassed by Modest Mouse?

Don't you find it funny that someone can put out a couple of albums and have a greatest hits album? Can't Britney have a long career before she has a whole album of greatest hits?

As for songs I like, there's some Kenny G songs I like, and Informer by Snow. Although, I like In Living Color's version better.

I can't say that I'm embarrassed about any music I like. I would only be embarrassed if I liked some of the stuff other people like. And I assume the same could be said for what people would think of what I like. But as far as me judging my own tastes...it's all good.

I recently deleted those. But yes, I had a few from Les Mis on there.

I have quite a bit of 80's stuff, including one by Mitsou. The Canadian guys know who she is, trust me. At one point I had "Man in Motion", "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover", and some Milli Vanilli. I also download "We Built This City" just tonight, but haven't put it on the iPod yet.

I also have several theme songs from various computer games from my youth, including some that have since been remixed.

(including Debbie Gibson, who I actually saw in concert when I was in high school...)

I took my high school girlfriend to see her at Six Flags over Georgia. I had never been to a concert where people sat down, so when she started a ballad, I was the only person in the place still standing and my GF was desperately trying to get me to sit, and I kept arguing with her that we are at a concert, people don't sit at concerts, what the hell's wrong with everybody. I don't think the rest of the night went as I had hoped...

2. Happy Ending, by Avril Lavigne. the music and lyrics and overall performance is of a higher calibre than your standard teen pop fair. every time this song is on the radio i'll listen to it, which is a compliment.

L.E.O. is a power-pop-collective..a recording project that began as a tribute to the idiosyncratic genius of Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra. It has become a Traveling Wilburys-esque creative outlet for a gang of like-minded musician/producers...it was originally conceived by Bleu and includes the diverse talents of Andy Sturmer (Jellyfish), Mike Viola (The Candy Butchers), Jason Scheff (Chicago), Steve Gorman (The Black Crowes), Matt Mahaffey (Self), John Fields (big-time pop-producer), Tony Goddess (pApAs fritAs), Hanson, Eric Barao (The Cautions), Scott Simons (The Argument), and Paula Kelley, among others..

If you're a Journey fan (and even if you're not), you should read this Idiot's Guide to Journey from one of the best music blogs on the net:

http://jefitoblog.com/blog/?p=807#comments

Jefito posts about 90% of his own material, but on the Idiot's Guides, he usually gets help from others. Following Journey was a nice Idiots Guide to They Might Be Giants. I find his blog to be crucial reading, and he always has tons of rare/bootleg recordings for download on his site.

Uh....nothing embarrasing about the Rocky 4 soundtrack. That is one helluva soundtrack. War and Training Montage are my favorite tracks. I have a number of soundtrack CD from Gladiator to Lord of the Rings. I even have the theme music for the television show called "The Contender".

But okay, I don't get the fascination with the Karate Kid soundtrack.

I didnt think this thread would be filled with songs by Avril Lavigne and 80s hit songs. I was expecting Hanson or the Spice Girls or something else of the sort. I like most of the groups/songs listed. And props to Ryche for Shakespears sister, I havent thought about them in a long time but liked some of their songs.

You know, Hanson gets a ton of shit, but I don't find it to be deserved. Yeah, they annoyed the hell out of all of us as pre-teens, but they've since grown up and still play and write their own songs. They aren't great, but they're pretty good, and I'd rather listen to them than most of what's on radio these days. At least, their 2004 album, not the kid stuff.

Agreed. I like some of the music from both groups ( ducking tomatoes and insults ). Their image is what hurt both groups. Somehow MTV can still influence who is cool and who isnt, even without playing 1 single video anymore. The fact is even if you didnt like their music both groups sounded good together when they sang, their voices complemented eachother well, which cant be said about some groups today who are wildly popular.

Does it have anything to do with the first stanza?, Specifically "you say he loves you more than me" which infers he's bisexual and attracted to the voice of the song, i.e. a male.

or is it because of the first line, you come and ask me, girl, to set you free, girl. Innuendo is all I'll say.

Did they do a cover? If it was released in 1997, it was Az Yet, not Boyz II Men. I enjoy that song too.

Now THIS is the proper response to the question. How can you be embarrassed by it if you like it?! That's like admitting you have shitty/questionable tastes. It's only "embarrassing" by way of comparison to others' tastes - which don't (or shouldn't) matter to you.

Fine, be pedantic about it! ;) It's not really so much of "embarrassed by" (that was the wording I stole from Mike & Mike in the a.m.) but it's music that if anybody else heard it come up, you'd get a few eye rolls (at a minimum).

Meanwhile, I have a LOT of the songs listed here on my iPod, perhaps I should be more "embarrassed." :D

Or maybe I should be embarrassed that though it's not on my iPod, I know I could sing along with Cher's Believe.... ;)

See, I'm not sure. I have two versions on mp3 - one says it's by Boyz II Men, the other Az Yet. They are almost identical, but have a few differences. They one labeled Az Yet lacks the piano that the Boyz II Men labeled track has, and the bridge isn't sung as strongly. But listening to them now, the rest of the vocals sound identical. I think this might be a studio outtake or run-through or something that has been incorrectly labeled Boyz II Men.

Anna is the famous song in Married With Children that Al cannot remember. He keeps humming Hmm, Hmm, Him. Then he thinks it is Go With Him.

My daughter would say yes (if she had a clue there even was an older song), and you and I would say no. But hey, at least the song is bringing them some royalties.

Speaking of which...back in the early 90s, Jellyfish had a song called Baby's Coming Back (which is a huge hit for McFly in the UK right now), and on one of the bootlegs I have (I think it's on the box set as well), the lead singer talks about how they ran into Player on the road and the guys jokingly suggested that Jellyfish owed them for the inspiration for the JF song. So to pay them back, JF started each show with a brief cover of Baby Come Back so that Player would get some royalties for having their song performed.

But on the other hand, that song is the perfect embarassment song by this criteria: You're in the car with your friends and you're scanning the radio stations. No shame in liking TTD. Very underrated singer and songwriter, imo. Introducing the Hardline... is an excellent debut, and his later work was far more ambitious in scope and style. As musically brave as Prince, and similarly odd. I believe he has converted to Buddhism now and goes by Sananda Maitreya - still releasing very good stuff, just to a MUCH smaller audience.

Most of my music collection would bring shame to most people.

ABBA, Ace of Base, Aqua, Cascada, several hundred songs from DDR, Erasure, Fastball, and soundtracks for many music-themed video games.

I do have some more popular bands like Billy Joel, The Beatles, Green Day, Queen, and Weird Al.

ABBA would have to be my favorite group.

I bet almost everyone cringed when they read what I listen to every day :)

Eh, it's all good. I don't listen to most of that stuff, but a lot of the pop/rock I listen to clearly has those influences to it. I probably would never listen to ABBA or Bee Gees, for instance, but I could point to several songs I really like that have elements of their music woven into them. Mainly, I enjoy genre-hopping pop/rock, but I don't like most of the best examples of music from within each of the genres. I don't know if that makes sense.

It's very hard to help my street cred when I listen to Regina Spektor, Feist, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Yael Naim, Ingrid Michaelson, Imogen Heap, etc

I'll give you some street cred, Shorty. I'm down with the chick rock. That's a solid line-up right there. I've seen Sarah Mclachlan in concert 7 times and went to two "Lilith Fairs." It's all good! I just sort of dabble in music now (though Regina Spektor's "Fidelity" and "Samson" have been two of my favorite songs for months now).

Back in the glory of my college days, however, it was all Sarah Mclachlan, Tori Amos, Sinead O'Connor, Concrete Blonde, 10,000 Maniacs, PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, Belly, The Breeders, and the like. Those were good times... The Golden Era of Chick Rock.

If you guys like the chick rock, how can Metric not be included?

And for mellower listens, Pascale Picard is awesome too.

I'm not embarrassed to like them, but a group called Die Mannequin has a lead (chick) voice that I like.

I've never heard of Metric. I pretty much completely stopped following music right around 2001. A

nything I have since then I either randomly happened to hear on the radio one day (I only listen to music stations when there are commercials on sports talk radio or NPR is too dull to bear) or someone reccomended, which is also rare.

So, Metric is good? Can you reccomend a few of their songs?

Ohmygod! Metric is awesome. Give me a few minutes to figure out the names of the good songs (iPod has ruined me forever from remembering song names, what with Random play and the lack of a CD Jacket to stare at when bored).

Jen Trynin ("One Year Down", "Better Than Nothin'") has a book out about her experience in the Golden Era of Chick Rock, though she apparently did NOT want to be considered a chick rocker. It's an interesting read... I'd say a little bit better than the book by the drummer of Semisonic.

OK I have a meeting in 5 minutes. It might take me a couple hours to get that list of songs. You will enjoy them; it will be worth the wait.

Looking forward to it. No rush, I'm at work and will likely be here for another few hours...

Interesting. I will have to check that out. Was there any reason she didn't want to be considered a chick rocker? Did she just want to be considered a musician? A rocker? A chick?

Some of my favorites of theirs are Police and the Private; Live it Out; Poster of a Girl and another I can't remember right offhand........

She wanted to be a "rocker". She felt like the "chick rock" label would pigeonhole her. It's kind of fascinating to read about all the decisions she made that in essence kept her career from taking off like it should have.

Yes, those are all fantastic! Great picks. My wife listened to Police and the Private over and over for weeks!

I also really like Empty, it takes a bit to get going, but wow, the payoff. That whole album (Live It Out) is really, really strong.

Off their other albums, I recommend starting with:

Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?
Combat Baby
Succexy
Dead Disco

Grow Up and Blow Away
Rock Me Now
Raw Sugar
Soft Rock Star (second version; last song on disc)

There are more, but those are the best.

Yeah, Empty was the other one I was thinking of. That was one of those discs that I ended up downloading one song at a time until I realized I had half of the damn thing and should just get the rest. Glad I did.
