Breast isn't best: readers tell US parenting magazine

<!-- END HEADLINE --> <!-- BEGIN STORY BODY --> by Jocelyne Zablit
Thu Aug 3, 10:39 PM ET

<img src="http://d.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/afp/20060804/capt.sge.brl67.040806083645.photo00.photo.default-384x512.jpg" align="right" vspace="5" hspace="5">WASHINGTON (AFP) - Readers of a US parenting magazine are crying foul over the publication's latest cover depicting a woman breastfeeding, with some calling the photo offensive and disgusting.

"I was SHOCKED to see a giant breast on the cover of your magazine," one woman from Kansas wrote in reaction to the picture in Babytalk, a free magazine that caters to young mothers. "I was offended and it made my husband very uncomfortable when I left the magazine on the coffee table."
Her reaction was part of some 5,000 letters the magazine has received in response to a poll to gage reader sentiment about Babytalk's August cover photo, which shows a baby nursing.

Several readers said they were "embarrassed" or "offended" by the Babytalk photo and one woman from Nevada said she "immediately turned the magazine face down" when she saw the photo.

"Gross, I am sick of seeing a baby attached to a boob," the mother of a four-month-old said.

Another reader said she was "horrified" when she received the magazine and hoped that her husband hadn't laid eyes on it.

"I had to rip off the cover since I didn't want it laying around the house," she said.

A national television program also ran a segment on the controversy, interviewing several people in New York who expressed disgust over the cover photo.

The picture in Babytalk was aimed at illustrating the controversy surrounding breastfeeding in the United States, where a national survey by the American Dietetic Association found that 57 percent of those polled are opposed to women breastfeeding in public and 72 percent think it is inappropriate to show a woman breastfeeding on television programs.
Babytalk executive editor Lisa Moran said though most of those who responded to the poll about the cover photo gave the magazine a thumbs up, she was surprised that some 25 percent expressed outrage.
"There is a real puritanical streak in America," Moran told AFP. "You see celebrities practically baring their breasts all the time and no one seems to mind in this sort of sexual context.

"But in this very natural context of feeding your child, a lot of Americans are very uncomfortable with it."

She said the controversy is all the more surprising in light of concerted efforts by the US government and health professionals to encourage women to breastfeed.

"Everyone is saying that breastfeeding is best for baby but there is so little support for it in public," Moran said.

She said the Babytalk cover photo marks the first time a major parenting magazine in the United States dares to break the taboo about showing a woman's breast and the outrage it has prompted is not about to discourage editors from doing it again.

"This hasn't scared us off at all," Moran said. "We're thrilled and hopefully this will help women get more support for nursing."

but vanity fair has demi moore and maxim has half a breast on their cover every month and no one gives a crap?!...these people that are complaining or "tearing the cover off" need to go see a doctor to have their rectal-cranial inversion syndrome treated.

What kills me about this is not that it's normal and natural and healthy, it's that it could just as easily be a fat person's elbow or a knee. Without seeing nipples (which of course, the baby is suckling), it could be many a body part. HOW OFFENSIVE!

I was offended and it made my husband very uncomfortable when I left the magazine on the coffee table because he knew I would chop off his penis if I caught him masturbating in the bathroom while looking at the picture.

I'll agree with this. I'll also add that while I have NO trouble with a mother breast feeding an infant in public, I do get more than an uneasy feeling when I see some toddler(eithteen months plus) walk over and attach him/herself to their mother's breast. I've seen mothers breast feed up to four year olds, and that just ain't right.

Am I the only person who thinks that breast feeding should be private and not put on the cover? I mean people who are walking past the magazine rack shouldnt have to see it. Would people be ok with a male hand wrapped around a stiff penis for the magazine Sexual Health?

Or shouldn't I ask that here?

Yes, or so it would seem.

I mean people who are walking past the magazine rack shouldnt have to see it.

Why not? Why can't they look at something else? why can't they look at a magazine they'd rather read? Why the hell must every individual cowtow to the few, the ignorant, the people who can't get a grip on their sexuality and thereby take it out on the rest of us with inane demands like "I shouldn't have to see that"?

Would people be ok with a male hand wrapped around a stiff penis for the magazine Sexual Health?

Or shouldn't I ask that here?

I personally wouldn't give a shit less what was on the cover, thats the whole problem, far too many people with FAR too much time on their hands feel they have some right to force their views and social requirements on everyone else.

If you honestly think your comparison makes ANY real sense whatsoever, then perhaps you need to start studying pregnancy, birth and babies, because there is nothing on that cover that should be offending ANYONE.

People need to grow the hell up and show some maturity about sexuality in this country.

Interesting... Considering your name.

I think that breastfeeding shouldd be in private, but if a woman uses a cover in public it is fine. I also think a baby breastfeeding is a beautiful and natural thing. The fact that people have hangups about it is strange.

For a magazine of this format, I find absolutly nothing wrong with this. Look at that baby's eyes staring at (presumably) its mother. There is something there that is what life is all about.

With all that said, I have to say that the first thing I wanted to post was "Got Milk?" :D

For SOME people, a breast is a sexual organ as is the male penis. Just because you guys are liberal and interested in seeing boobies on a cover doesn't mean that it isn't as offensive to some people as seeing the male thingy. Some people don't get off on semi-pornographic material.

You're missing the point.

There is NOTHING sexual about breastfeeding, its the single most NATURAL thing a woman can do. If YOU have a problem with a BREAST then perhaps you YOU should get some counseling about YOUR sexual hangups.

Equating a breastfeeding babe to a penis and pornography is pathetic. Grow the Fuck UP.

As for your "liberal" comment, good god, does everything have to have some political connotation? this isn't about politics, this is about SOME people trying to foist their personal hangups off on others.

As I've said many other times, YOU control what YOU stare at, if you can't see someone breastfeding and CHOOSE to look in another direction, who's problem is that? Yours.

Its the same for me, I can't stand all the religious rhetoric that is plastered over the entire freaking universe. I can't go 2 blocks around my home without having to see some "gGod can save you" arrogance hanging in a window or on a wall or on a bumper sticker. *I* personally would love to see THAT banned. however, everyone has the right to say their peice, so I CHOOSE to ignore the tripe when I see it.

The other problem with what you posted, Noddadrop, is that your'e completely missing this thing called etiquette.

You'll find that we're generally a good group here, but we gotta get to know you first, before we feel like listening to you (or anybody new) "preach." Your first (as far as I can tell without looking too hard) 10 posts here have been in this thread where you've basically told us that you think you're better than all of us because you don't drink and because you think it's reprehensible for having a breast on a magazine. A breast, mind you, that we've already established looks like an elbow.

There are threads where things can get heated and people can be found attacking eachother and eachother's beliefs. You'll find them labedl "POL" for politics and you'll notice that most of the bantering is done by well-established members of the community, people who are well known and though it might look like they are personal attacks (ok, sometimes they are), generally it's known that they're expressing a very charged feeling and it can be let go.

For anybody to do that in their first posts on the board suggest to everybody that they're a troll. Hence you've been labeled as such. There's nothing wrong with what you or anybody else believing what you want to believe, but don't give us the "holier than thou" attitude when we barely know you, it's really not a good way to start off and a fast and sure way to get labeled, fairly or not.

1) Why is it called "preaching" when I express a different viewpoint that happens to be a bit more conservative? I didn't ram my values down your throat, I just said why I don't want to see breastfeeding on a cover of a magazine. From the responses, which varied from personally insulting to downright vulgar and profane, I guess my viewpoint isn't a common one around here. That's fine, but at least have the ETIQUETTE to listen to a different viewpoint without resorting to insults and vulgarity.

2) I never said I was better than anyone because I don't drink. People were making comments about my name so I said where it comes from. Why are you so sensitive about the topic of drinking? Do you drink too much? Do you feel bad about it deep down and is that why you see me "judging" you even though I just explained my own name?

3) Do I have to be accepted by your group and be here for a long time before my opinions can be expressed? You said that people who have been around here are free to express their opinions because people know them. So, I ask you, am I a "troll" because I wanted to start jumping into the community right away instead of tucking my tail between my legs for a few months (or years), or am I a "troll" because you disagree with my opinion? I can gaurantee that if I made a comment about how I just LOVE to see breasts on magazine covers many of you wouldn't be jumping on me for expressing my opinion so quickly.

In a "Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!" way, yes it would be.

And the breast is not a sex organ. This is not an opinion or a belief. It's a basic, biological fact. The breast plays no part in sexual reproduction, hence, it is not a sex organ. Its natural function is that of feeding young. That's it.

Now, I ain't saying playing with a nice set of boobies isn't fun. It is, in fact, a nice way to pass some time. But to say that the breast is a "sex organ"? And people try and say that sex education is a bad thing.

EDIT: Honestly, I don't see much of a difference between this guy (and the people in the article) complaining about a breast being offensive compared to 99% of eveything else that gets complained about for being offensive. If he finds public displays of breasts to be offensive, then fine. Be offended by whatever you want, I don't care. (It's when you want government to create and enforce laws based purely on being offended that crosses the line for me.).

Because conservatism has nothing at all with what you're talking about. I find it curious that some people look at the cover of a magazine devoted to babies, see a woman nursing her child and think that's somehow perverted. Anyone who looked at that and thought "sex" really needs to reevaluate.

So, what is it in that picture that you find offensive? (btw, the breast may be used in sexual situations, but it's not a "sexual" organ in the fashion you're implying)

2) I never said I was better than anyone because I don't drink. People were making comments about my name so I said where it comes from. Why are you so sensitive about the topic of drinking? Do you drink too much? Do you feel bad about it deep down and is that why you see me "judging" you even though I just explained my own name?
I don't drink, but I don't go screaming to the heavens that I don't. When you make what you do public, you invite public scrutany for that act. You don't want people to give you hell over it, keep it to yourself.

No one is saying you shouldn't express your opinions, but (and trust me on this, I KNOW), if your opinion is unpopular, expect people to respond. If you can't take that, don't post. This is a community, for sure, and it's one that will call you to task if they think you're being an idiot.

From my experience, if you're expressing a rather idiotic point, people here will let you know. Again, I'm someone who have expressed on numerous occasions idiotic opinions, and I got what I deserved when I said them. Welcome to the club, kid.

As it seems most people think that breastfeeding should be something private, so it kinda makes sense to say it's wrong on a certain level. But you did send out a message of not even having the slightest clue about what all the organs of a human body are 'designed' for.

2) I never said I was better than anyone because I don't drink. People were making comments about my name so I said where it comes from. Why are you so sensitive about the topic of drinking? You don't want to be judged on saying you don't drink alcohol, then don't judge others based on where they come from.

Actually that's perfectly alright and falls within the worldwide norm. Certainly not the American norm, but as the interviewee in the article mentions, there's a blatant Puritanical streak in the USA.

The World Health Organization recommends continuing breastfeeding through at least 2 years of age, breastmilk being the only recommended nourishment through the first 6 months of life.

Under NDP's standard, apparently the mouth and ears are also sex organs and should never be seen in public or on a magazine cover. What I really find offensive is NDP's attitude on this issue. With that said, I would not shut him up for speaking it. But if he does speak it, he ought to be prepared for the other viewpoint.

I get a kick out of the U.S.'s puritanical views on not so much the sex thing, but nudity. It's really hilarious. Allowing kids access to movies, tv shows, and video games where countless acts of violence (realistic violence at that) is bypassed right over instead to outrage over a bum or a boob. Simply hilarious. For those bible scholars, you do know that Adam and Eve arrived on this planet completely nude, right?

Polygamist gets 45 days for sex with teen bride
Investigator fears sentence sends wrong message
By Harriet Ryan
Court TV

Friday, August 4, 2006; Posted: 11:04 a.m. EDT (15:04 GMT)

(Court TV) -- An Arizona judge has sentenced a polygamist to 45 days in county jail for having sex with a teenager he took as his third wife.

The sentence disappointed authorities in Kingman, Arizona, who had hoped a harsher punishment for defendant Kelly Fischer would discourage others in the church from taking teenage wives.

Fischer was the first of seven members of the Fundamentalist Latter-day Saints (FLDS) to be tried for plural marriages to minors.

"I don't know if we've sent a strong enough message to these people," said Gary Engels, an investigator with the Mohave County Attorney's office.

About 7,000 FLDS members live in the twin border towns of Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale, Utah.

Members of the group, which broke with mainstream Mormons in the 1890s over polygamy, believe that only those in plural marriages can reach the highest level of heaven.

Warren Jeffs, the church leader or "prophet," is a federal fugitive from charges in both states stemming from his alleged arrangement of "celestial marriages" between teenage girls and older, married men.

The county prosecutor, Matt Smith, had asked Judge Steven Conn to sentence Fischer, 39, to some prison time. Fischer faced a minimum sentence of probation and a maximum of four years in prison.

As part of the sentence, Fischer must complete three years probation and register as a sex offender. He must report to jail by November 1.

Although polygamy is unconstitutional in Arizona, it is not a crime. Law enforcement largely left the FLDS alone until about 18 months ago, when Mohave County began investigating allegations of sex with underage girls.

Relying on birth certificates and testimony of former church members, a jury convicted Fischer last month of sexual contact with a minor and conspiracy for having sex with a 16-year-old.

The woman, now 21 and the mother of three children by Fischer, refused to cooperate with the prosecution and was among 130 people to send letters vouching for his character to the judge.

"We have a beautiful family together. I love my husband. He loves us and takes very good care of us. The children adore their father ... I don't need to explain my personal life to anyone," she wrote in the letter.

Fischer addressed the court for about a half hour, telling the judge that there was no coercion or abuse in his household.

"I can say for my life and my family that there's no one that's been pressured into doing anything they didn't want to do," the Las Vegas Review-Journal quoted Fischer as saying. "Every single person is very happy. There's no pain."

According to the paper, the judge told Fischer his religious beliefs did not justify breaking the law.

"There is no reason why people in Colorado City, simply because they subscribe to a different religious belief, should believe that they have the right to do something that everyone else in society cannot do," the judge said.

A day after the sentencing, Smith, the county prosecutor, was circumspect about the possible impact of any punishment handed down by an authority outside the insular community.

"I would've like to have seen him get more time, not so much that he needed to get it, but more along the lines of a deterrent factor," Smith said.

But, he said, "Does what we say really matter to them? It's what Warren Jeffs says that matters, and if he says marry a 16-year-old, then they are going to do that."

Another FLDS member, Donald Barlow, goes on trial on August 15.

and btw, the standard you set was in calling a breast a sexual organ, when it in no way has anything to do with sex, but only in stimulation...therefore, mouths and ears, which are also not sex organs, but are involved in stimulation, are also offensive....its called the transitive property i believe.

If you guys are saying that there are sexual nerves in the mouth and ears, I really don't know what else to say. Ask any doctor, nurse, nursing assistant, hospital custodian, or any junior high student currently taking health and they'll confirm the lack of sexual nerves in the mouth and ears.

Just because you can USE your mouth for sex, and you can HEAR sex, doesn't mean there are sexual nerves inside those organs. I honestly can't believe I have to explain this to adults. But then again, there are still adults who call their genitals "hoo-hoos" and "ding-dongs."

1) I'm not going to answer any of those questions. They are none of your business and have little to do with the topic at hand. My OPINION is that I don't want to see breastfeeding on the cover of a magazine. I'm entitled to my opinion as are you. Instead of maturely allowing me to disagree you have decided to immaturely ridicule my beliefs and inquire as to my sexual history.

2) Considering the immature, insulting, and vulgar responses to my beliefs, I find it hard to believe that out of all the posts in this topic, I'M considered a troll. If you think I'm a troll, I won't lose sleep. However I think you need to look at yourself before you start slinging accusations my way.

3) Sexual nerves and which organs they are present in is not up for debate, nor does my experience with women change the simple facts of biology. I don't need to convince you that your ears do not have sexual nerves in them. If you want to believe that your mouth and ears are wired in the same way as your genitals, more power to you.

3) Sexual nerves and which organs they are present in is not up for debate, nor does my experience with women change the simple facts of biology. I don't need to convince you that your ears do not have sexual nerves in them. If you want to believe that your mouth and ears are wired in the same way as your genitals, more power to you.

How about you define what a "sexual nerve" is and link to sources of that definition.

I've searched Biology-Online (http://www.biology-online.org/dictionary.asp), BioTech's Life Science Dictionary (http://biotech.icmb.utexas.edu/search/dict-search.html), The Dictionary of Cell and Molecular Biology(http://www.mblab.gla.ac.uk/~julian/Dict.html), I even checked Dictionary.com and Merriam-Webster Online. None of them have an entry for "sexual nerve" or "sex nerve".

No, they aren't wired the same as genitals - neither are breasts. But they all are erogenous zones, and stimulation of all of those areas can produce sexual excitement. Stimulation of all of them does not necessarily produce the same results, and effects vary from person to person, but saying the breast is sexual in the same way as a penis is incorrect, as is asserting that the breast is sexual and yet the mouth and ears are not.

You either got a lousy education in human sexuality or you're being willfully ignorant. Doesn't really matter to me either way - I'm not the one who's wildly misinformed on this topic.

Then don't look. Simple solution.

You control what makes you comfortable or not, not some magazine publisher. If you're uncomfortable, be an adult and remove yourself from the situation. Stop trying to push your hang up with breastfeeding onto the rest of us.

Since when is simply disagreeing "pushing my hangup with breastfeeding onto the rest of you?"

The fact that many of you cannot tolerate a single differing opinion without calling it "preaching" or "pushing your hangups on us" is profoundly disturbing. You have different values than I do and I accept that. I don't think you're "pushing" them on me or shoving them down my throat. They're just different and I don't have a problem with you expressing them.

If there is intolerance here, it is coming from your direction, not mine.

Yeah, I'm leaving this debate, now that I heard NDP come up with new biology terms and no clue about human sexuality. Nothing but empty arguments, which on the surface appeal to the ignorant but yet have no basis in fact (and which I am convinced were foisted upon him at an early age), simply thrown out there to justify prudish behavior sought to be enforced against the general public who aren't scared of boobs and nudity in general. As crazy as it may sound, naked boobs (on the cover of a magazine or otherwise) will not bring down civilization. In fact, it enhances it.

Then I've got a hangup too. Seriously, if a kid can walk up to his mother lift up her shirt, manipulate the breast feeding bra, and latch on, he is well beyond the point of maturity where he should be weaned. As for the bit about the WHO. I think that is fine for most of the world, but they don't have Starbucks, Vons, or McDonalds. Here in the US, there are plenty of alternative nutrition options for toddlers.

I have never heard of "sexual nerves" before and would like to be educated on how they are wired. I am also curious to find out if these sexual nerves run along the inner thigh as well.

I am curious how uncomfortable he would feel about a shirtless baby girl on the cover of a magazine clad only in a diaper. Would that be offensive or does age and development have a factor?

I agree. Are they like other nerves where there are clusters for important areas, but not others... or are they just for sex? What are the other sexual nerve areas?

Also... Why do we have these "sexual nerves?" Is it so that sex will supposedly feel good and the human species will get together and stimulate each other's "sexual nerves" resulting in offspring that must be bottle-fed a triple-venti white mocha?

Eagles, what are you talkin' about? As NDP said, any 7th grader can tell you that there are such sexual nerves and they reside in the breast and sex organs.

A very sad commentary that NDP actually believes this and credits the public school system with teaching him it. As I said before, clearly it was health ed. in Texas, or perhaps Miss.

No one is attacking your beliefs or your opinions. No one gives a shit if you don't want to see a breast in public. It is your facts (or lack of), it is your absurd anaolgies that people are "attacking". The very first thing you analogized breastfeeding on the cover of a magazine to was showing a man masturbating on a magazine cover. A completely absurd anology, and many people tried to explain why to you. And then you start talking about the breast being a "sex organ" and it having "sexual nerves" in it. It is these things people are responding to, not your opinion.

Yet, you start whining about people attacking you and name-calling (while throwing out plenty of name-calling and attacks yourself) and cry about people disagreeing with your opinions.

Here's a 2 step program that will make you a better member of this community, and the rest of society for that matter.

1) Learn to tell the difference between someone attacking your opinion and someone objecting to/disagreeing with your analogies/facts.
2) Grow a thicker skin, or in your case, any kind of skin

Why? His "sexual nerves" are bit too big and exposed for? Is that?!?! Come on! The kid can't help it. Just look at him. . .

http://www.adhurl.com/uploads/fat_baby-thumb.jpg

Poor, little Hercules.

He's just a toddler who's been sucking from the teet, I mean "sexual nerves" of Frappucinos and Big Macs and bears an eerily striking resemblence to a young Claude Lemieux.

(Thanks for that last bit, Pumpy. It made my day. :))

I will never know happiness :(

I highly recommend anyone to try and catch the movie "Busting Out" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419615/ if you are interested in the fact that breasts are non sexual in most societies. I saw it on Showtime last night with the wife. I just had to post about it here since we were just talking about this.

Why? Because you can only dish it out? Just relax. People were changing my name WAY earlier in this thread. I didn't get ticked.

Just smile and have fun. That's the best way to live anyways. Not spreading around negativity and trying to bring others down.

I think she's cute, but a bit young for me. But I have a soft spot for asian women.

What do you think of Debrah Messing?

Garbage. I bet her sexual nerves droop so low that they're practically touching her other sexual nerves.

Nice to see that Bubba Wheels and Anne Coulter got fucked up on wine coolers, had Gilligan-style sex, then spawned a demon love child 666 minutes later.
