I've just awoken to the idea that podcasts might make for some interesting listening on my hour-each-way journey to work. I've spent the past few hours listening to various podcasts, trying to find one that interests me, but there are just so many out there.
Has anyone got any recommendations? What I'm after is a podcast covering international news, and a podcast covering sports - basketball in particular.

I have found this site to be extremely helpful, though I generally only listen to TWIT

I find most 'personality' based podcasts annyong. I just can't listen for an hour to some random dude (or dudette) going on and on about their personal life.
I listen to the Board Game Geek (http://www.boardgamespeak.com/) podcast which is almost 'finished' but has a great archive if you like boardgames.
I also listen to Escape Pod (http://escapepod.org/) which is a great show where they read out one Sci Fi short story per week. The hit to miss ratio is pretty high on this show for me.
ESPN has a variety of choices. Not sure how much there is specific to basketball though.

I'm bumping this...but how come some podcasts I have to use a Podcast player (I dowloaded Doppler??) and some I can just click on the Podcast and it opens and plays in a new window? Also, if I download these to my computer, I can just put them on my ipod for use on the bus?
I like Doppler ok, but I clicked on a podcast I wanted to test out (I retreived it or whatever) and it kept downloading all their episodes to my computer non-stop, even after I deleted it.

Good site to use is www.podcast.net. While I don't use the site to actually play the podcasts, it's an excellent place to search for topic-specific podcasts. Once I search and find one that I like, I then just use a search engine like Google to search for the podcast's home website and then download the episodes there.

If you play poker, I find the Circuit Podcast to be pretty entertaining. Available on Itunes or at cardplayer.com. Unfortunately, I think they're dark until the next major tournament, but some of the back episodes during the WSOP are worth listening to.

PTI is podcasted in its entirety (it's usually uploaded around midnight of the day the show airs). I used to d/l a ton of podcasts that I never listened to, so I narrowed it down to a few. These are the only ones that I really listen to.
- Ebert & Roeper
- PTI
- Slate
- The Onion Radio News

Two soccer podcasts I can suggest (both dailies)
World Soccer Daily
2-hour daily show. This is also broadcast on Sirius… it’s a pretty in-depth look at stuff every weekday. These guys are total MLS haters as well. OneLiverpool fan
The 2 Gs (Graham Bell and Gary Richards)<O:p</O:p
1 hour daily show. This show is certainly more from a fan perspective I would say and these two guys are definitely more MLS-friendly, they actually talk about it a fair amount although they also realize it needs a lot of work.
World Soccer Daily is definitely the “better” of the two shows, although they’re a bit different in style I would say. They each kind of have their own charms. World Soccer Daily is more caller driven as well and they’ll have guests on pretty frequently. They really have no problem filling 2 hours every day. A friend of mine turned me on to both shows, I’d suggest you check them out.

Yes! A total regular for me, a great show and you really miss nothing by hearing just the audio. It's been interesting to hear Roeper with the guest hosts recently too (Jay Leno, Kevin Smith).

The other things I podcast are really just radio shows that I like to listen to that throw up highlights and I listen when I miss them the first time around:
The Don and Mike Show
The Junkies
Then I have some other things for fun now and then like the Onion Radio News, Vintage Cartoons, and Dan Cook's Tourgasm.

I know you're looking for basketball specifically, but my personal favorites is
Tips From The Top Floor (http://podcastalley.com/podcast_details.php?pod_id=3526) a podcast for digital photography for advanced and novice photographers. This won the #1 Educational Podcast last year, I highly recommend it if you're interested in photography.

On the international news side, the BBC has a number of regular podcasts which are very good, including their 'Today' program, 'NewsPod' and 'World Today Select'.
