NEWPORT, Ky. -- Bengals guard Eric Steinbach was arrested and charged with boating under the influence on the Ohio River, becoming the fifth Cincinnati player in three months accused of breaking the law.
A Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources officer stopped Steinbach because he was violating an idle-only zone Saturday night, agency spokesman Mark Marraccini said.
Steinbach failed a series of field sobriety tests, Marraccini said.
The player was released from the Campbell County jail in Newport after posting bond and was to appear in court Tuesday, jail and court records show.
The Bengals had the day off Sunday, their first free time since they opened training camp in Georgetown, Ky. Steinbach practiced with the team Monday and declined comment about the case.
Steinbach was a first alternate for the Pro Bowl last season, when he started all 16 regular-season games and a playoff loss to Pittsburgh. He was part of a line that allowed only 21 sacks, a club record.
The Bengals generally do not comment on players' arrests.
The team has been on the defensive over the recent player arrests and a suspension. Receiver Chris Henry leads the list, with four arrests since December. He is to go on trial later this month in Orlando, Fla., on a gun charge.
The Bengals drafted defensive end Frostee Rucker and linebacker A.J. Nicholson in April despite their problems in college. Both were arrested before they began negotiating contracts -- Rucker for spousal battery, Nicholson for burglary and grand theft.
Cincinnati police used a stun gun on third-year defensive tackle Matthias Askew last month and charged him with resisting arrest.
Middle linebacker Odell Thurman is suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
I'd try and list all the Bengals with off the field issues but it'd be longer then the credits to a movie.
How can Bengals fans condone this? This team is just filled with headcases. I honestly think they're going to come unglued at the pace they're going on and it could be back to duldrums for the Bengals again.

What exactly would you have the fans do about this?

I'd show some outrage. As a Lions fan we know all about venting our displeasure. I'm not saying boycot the team or not go to the games but I mean come on, they're turning into a team full of thugs. And as a Bengals fan would you really want them to be considered the new Trailblazers?

Dola -- I'd like to think at some point the next big incident will mean that player is gone. People may argue that but who's to say this won't keep up? An example has to be set at some point.

The Bengals are really coming close to becoming a disgrace to Cincinnati.

I think it's the simple fact that they're just turning the corner from being NFL laughing stock and now all this. If they'd continued to be just another stomping ground week in and week out I am sure no one would care half as much, but this is what happens when it looks like you're turning the corner, and all these players ought to know that.

Everyone should go to home games dressed like this guy:

Unfortunately for Bengals fans, this is what Mike Brown does. He tries to sign/find the cheapest/best bargains available, regardless of character questions.
Bengals fans have spent years talking about what a crummy owner Mike Brown is. This is no surprise to those of us who have been paying attention for the last 25 years.

Perhaps this phone line shouldn't be limited to calling about people in the stands...

Bengals Fans Can Call 'Jerk' Hotline
CINCINNATI (AP) -- Cincinnati Bengals fans annoyed by bad behavior in the stands can now report it by cell phone. The hot line number should be easy to remember - (513) 381-JERK.
Fans using too much foul language will get a warning from stadium security. Those who continue could be ejected and have their season tickets and personal seat licenses taken away. More serious offenses could lead to arrest.
The team doesn't want to become the "curse police," but expects fans to behave themselves, said Bob Bedinghaus, the Bengals' director of development for Paul Brown Stadium.
"You need to understand you're coming to an NFL football game," Bedinghaus said. "On the other hand, we want to make sure that we're paying attention to those folks who are going over the line."

When callers report problems such as threats, fights or drunkenness, security officials will use the stadium's video cameras to focus on the offenders and then respond.
Fans have complained to team officials that beer is increasing the problem with misbehavior in the stands.
"They were complaints (of) excessive drunkenness. People that were kind of falling down drunk," Bedinghaus said. "And there were some fights last year. Whenever you put 65,000 people together, you're always going to have some fights. But there were a few more than normal."
Jeanie Dittrich of West Chester, a season ticket holder, said she was offended by drunken fans when she took her 12-year-old son, Austin, to a playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. A woman kept spilling beer on her, and a man next to her son was swearing and helped start a fight.
"We told him beforehand, 'You might see some drunk people, you might hear some ... swearing.' But at the game, I thought, 'Oh, my gosh, I'm going to mar my son for the rest of his life by having him come to this game,'" she said.
Season ticket holders will be notified about the hot line this week, as well as the consequences of bad behavior. The team will show a video promoting the hot line at home games.
Bedinghaus said the Bengals do expect some prank calls.
"If you get 6,000 people calling this line - 'Hey, (Steelers quarterback) Ben Roethlisberger is a jerk' - then it becomes less effective," he said. "The thing to remember is we have caller ID on this line."

LOL. This made me laugh. But as for the caller ID... can't they just call using a pay phone in the stadium (unless they don't exist...)?

Part of this Bengals problem is that Brown and/or Lewis have big egos that make them believe that they can control and keep these guys out of trouble.

I'm thinking (hoping) a message will be sent during cutdowns this year. I don't understand all the goings on and how they all happened so suddenly, but you have to remember, 2 of these guys aren't even "Bengals" yet.
I highly doubt the comment about Mike Brown being a guy who scrimps and saves at every turn any more, because he has gone and re-signed key players at the end of last season and all offseason for very large contracts- (C.Palmer, J.Johnson, Chad Johnson, Levi Jones) as well as bringing in Dexter Jackson and Sam Adams.
I do have a problem with his draft picks this past year though. I know he is the one that pulled the trigger on Brooks in the supplemental draft, and probably had the final decision when it came to A.J. Nicholson and Frostee Rucker becoming Bengals..
As far as the goings on with Odell Thurman and Chris Henry, I have faith that Marvin can bring them around with all thats going on.. If not, its just more Bengals luck.. I think the team is cursed.
Super Bowl year of 88-89, Stanley Wilson fucks around and Tim Krumrie gets hurt EARLY in the game. The team can't quite pull off the victory.
Paul Brown Dies.
15 years penalty for letting a legend die without a title.
Return to the playoffs last season, first pass of the game, and there goes not only Carson Palmer with a serious knee injury, but also Chris Henry with a similar, though not as severe injury.
Now the offseason, with every player and their mama getting arrested.
What gives?
Time for a new sig, Shorty..
"Bengals, please get smarter!"

From watching interviews, it is apparent that Lewis doesn't want these type of character guys on the team and that he doesn't have final say over the matter.

Pay phones still exist? I thought they had been phased out...I know the ones at my OG were removed about two years ago.

The handguns & bulletproof vest were just to make sure that he could get through the Cincinnati locker room with no problems.
