I guess during a game of NCAA, my xbox decided to make a pretty nice scratch across the middle of the game (scratched across the disc through the hole about halfway across). Now the game does not play...not really sure what I can do about it or even how it happened, I didn't move the xbox during gameplay, so that's not it. Do I have to now go pay $60 for a new game, or is there anything I can do. When people exchange for dirty disc errors, do they look at the disc?

I've heard about this happening to a few people, though I'm not real sure what you can do about it...
Typically any open return is inspected at ebgames ect, so if there is a deep scratch across it I imagine they'll see. Although places like Wal-mart and such is the luck of the draw.

Apparently if your disc was scratched and you didn't move your system you can call 1-800-4MY-XBOX and get support, though I have no idea what they'll do... Just from some brief searching that seems to be what others say.

I don't doubt you, but how does this happen? Internal parts move the disc or the laser goes haywire...something to that effect?

You might try buying one of those disc repair machines that help repairs scratches. However, I've had mixed results with it (use it for older games, haven't used it for a 360 game.) It tends to work if the scratch isn't too deep.

Of course, in the video they are moving the system while it's on, but still gives you an idea.

Really I have no clue what happened to me. I'm not the only one who plays the game, but my roommates have both pled innocent to the scratch. All I know is that I finished playing a game, it froze, and now the game won't boot up. It's pretty weird.

That sucks man. I'd follow the advice that others gave...good luck.

This is why I like to buy my games from Walmart. While in Kansas City (fucking Chiefs), my NCAA 2007 game inexplicably cracked. I'm not talking about a scratch; I'm talking about a full-fledged crack in the disc. Fortunately I keep the receipt for all my games in the instruction manual and I took it to Walmart. They told me that they could only exchange it for the same game and I told them that that was fine. I got a new disc and new receipt.
FTR, I have no idea how it broke. I'm sure I didn't do it and I don't think the maid would've done it either.

I've used one of those scratch repair gadgets (disc doctor) and it does work pretty well depending on how deep the scratch is. i've really only ever used it on music cds, and the worst ones i have done it to still had some small skips after i repaired them...i dont know what that kind of result would translate to in a game.

Yeah, I bumped mine two days ago while I was playing NCAA and a holographic recording of Bill Gates appeared. Kinda like that scene in Star Wars with R2 and Obi-Wan. It was a video of him dry humping some poor bastard trying to buy a 360 at Best Buy. The image was disturbing, but it was the high pitched, maniacal laugh that seemed to haunt me the most.
Seriously though, I'd contact xbox support and complain. Hopefully they'll do something about it.

Well, a little post script...
I called the Xbox phone number and I got an Indian woman (can you call a major company without getting an Indian phone bank these days?) who was little to no help. She had me do troubleshooting which wasn't really pertinent and then tried to get me to send in the xbox for a repair for "only" $160. I did not do this.
Then I went to Game Stop who predicively told me that there was nothing they could do because it was over 7 days from purchase and I should have purchased the $3 warranty that was never offered to me.
So, then I went to Wal-Mart where I exchanged the game ever though customer service saw the crack, joked that I must have stepped on it, and I didn't have a reciept. So, now I have a crack-free game and it only cost me a trip to Wal-Mart and back.
