I made a really bad decision in 1985--I decided this CD thing would go the way of the 8-track. Now my tape collection is starting to really show its age. So I'm talking with the wife about how I want to start replacing my favorite tapes with CDs.

Her response was, "I don't want you to make the same mistake again--find out some more about MP3's and the like before you decide."

Good advice--but I have little clue about what iPods and MP3's are. I'm not a technophobe, but I'm not good with technology. (hell, I'm still trying to beat Yoshii's Island on the Super NES).

What looks to be the best route to go for replacing an worn out collection of 70's and 80's music?

cds are the best route. unless you do the allofmp3.com thing, you are gonna probably pay more for an itunes mp3 versus a used cd of what you have.

not to mention...dollar for dollar, the mp3s you purchase aren't gonna sound as good as a cd.

aside from digital tape technology (DATs), it has been proven that backwards compatibility isn't something to worry about. that was a big worry.

if you aren't an audiophile and don't care about the latest hi-def audio trends, your cds will be around and will be able to be played for many, many years.

This reminded me of my family's decision to go with Betamax over VHS.

funny. sounded like my friends decision to go with the saturn over the playstation.

i remember my friends dad bought a DAT player about 6 months after they were introduced. payed several thousand dollars. bought a few releases that some labels put out. ended up selling the thing for about 1/5 of what he paid for it a year or so later.

No offense to SelzShoes, but if he's made it this far on tapes, sound quality is probably not high on his list. Still, I would always go with CD format. If you don't even know what an iPod is, chances are you won't be making much use of MP3s.

My Ratt - Out of the Cellar tape still sounds fabulous.

he'll find out that Roth's voice doesn't vary in pitch that much...it's the warped tape doing that.

I've still got a handful tapes, most of which are either out of print (Dan Reed Network's Breathless EP) or signed (Pantera's Cowboys From Hell). Other than that, I wouldn't give a squirt of piss for tapes. I hated the hissing and the rewinding and fast-forwarding back before there was a viable replacement.

That part isn't; I can't score 100 on all the levels, so I've never seen 5 or 6 of the "Extra" levels. But I still keep trying. :)

On the sound quality tip, I think since my tapes have been gradually deteriorating, I didn't notice it until I finally broke down and bought some recent (ok--early to mid-90's) stuff on CD. The quality has become more grating as some old favs (Learning to Crawl, Electric Warrior and New Traditionalist especially) are just wearing out.
