<!-- begin text11 div --><!-- begin leftcol --> <!-- template inline --> ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=oak) signed Jeff George (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=812) to a contract Monday, bringing back a player who hasn't thrown an NFL pass in five seasons.
George, the No. 1 overall pick by Indianapolis in 1990, joined the team in time for Monday's afternoon practice. He previously played for the Raiders in 1997-98, starting 23 games and throwing 33 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
It is not immediately clear what his role will be on the Raiders, who already have Aaron Brooks (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4781), Andrew Walter (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7245) and Marques Tuiasosopo (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5506) on the roster.
George played with the Colts from 1990-93. He was in Atlanta from 1994-96, then spent two seasons with Oakland and one with Minnesota before joining the Redskins in 2000, first as a backup. He was signed by Seattle as insurance midway through the 2002 season, but didn't play. Chicago signed him late in the 2004 season, but he never played for the Bears either.
George, known for his strong arm and clashes with coaches, has a 46-78 career record as a starter and has never lasted longer than four years with any one team.
George hasn't played since 2001, when he was cut after two games with the Redskins. In his last two games with Washington, George had a quarterback rating of 34.6, completing 23 of 42 passes with three interceptions.
In his next-to-last game with Washington, he and coach Marty Schottenheimer had an animated sideline discussion after George committed four turnovers and was removed from the game.
George also had a sideline argument with coach June Jones when he was with the Atlanta Falcons (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=atl) in 1996, and the team suspended him and then cut him.
George played well his first season in Oakland, throwing for 3,917 yards and 29 touchdowns in 1997. He struggled with injuries the following season, starting only seven games, and was replaced the following season by Rich Gannon (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=430), who was a better fit in coach Jon Gruden's West Coast offense.

I can't think this is a good thing for the Raiders, but really I think George threw some pretty amazing balls. One of the best passes I've ever seen left his hand, flew fifty plus yards to Randy Moss, threading the needle between multiple defenders. The ball never got more than twelve, maybe fifteen, feet off the ground. It was a thing of beauty.

If only his mind was as beautiful as his arm.

It is not as if he has suddenly became an integral part of the Raiders. He most likely won't make the cut. Shell just said it would be nice to have someone be able to come in as insurance in case one of the qb's went down. I remember once when all three qb's went down in one game and punter Ray Guy actually took a few snaps at the very end of a game. I would much rather have the extreme remote possibillity of an aging vet with a cannon arm, than a punter taking snaps. He will never see the field, and if he did I don't think the earth would tilt on it's axis if he had to play a quarter or two because of an emergency.

Walter missed the last preseason game with a sore right shoulder, but practiced Monday and said he felt fine and should play this week. Shell said the main reason to sign George was to get him familiar with the system in case they needed him later this season.

"It's a precaution for us to bring a guy like that in because you can lose a quarterback," Shell said. "And then when you lose one you have to have somebody ready to go. Even if he doesn't stick with us, there'll be somebody out there that knows a little bit about our system."

Oh, jeez, you're right. He's doing all this in order to become a first-ballot Hall of Famer. If it looks like he's not going to get there on the first ballot, he'll come back. This just gets better and better!

I agree. I think that beyond his attitude, had he been with the same QB (not in Atlanta) for more than a few seasons, his stats would've been much more.

I don't know if I could say that. He put up some very nice numbers early in his career in Atlanta when he was the only playmaker on the team, which was impressive. But one thing held him back -- he was flippin' nuts.

I don't know if he was nuts early in his career or something just flipped when Left Eye burned his house down, but he worn out his welcome with his attitude and behavior at every stop along the way the rest of his career. He had a brief renaissance here in KC when he and Grbac connected on the field, but got run out of time following the Brock Middlebrook incident and the fact that he was bouncing checks and stealing stuff from people all over town.

His destructive tendencies keep me from saying he was gerat. He could have been great, but let his demons get to him.

Yeah, if he's on the roster opening day his entire 2006 salary is guaranteed. So we'll probably see him resigned a couple days after opening day.
