Gentoo seems to be more bleeding edge than Debian and has a more customizable (i.e., difficult) installation process. Once everything is set up, it seems to be faster than Debian. I'm leaning toward Debian since I'd like to get up and running ASAP with minimal hassles.

Personally, I use Mandrake, but I'm not a Linux expert, at all. I just have it in a 10 GB partition on my HD, in case Windows dies... Some of my friends, who are "hardcore" Linux users, always say that Debian is the best. Obviously, it's not for the average user.

I also use, especially to recover data on other people's PCs, live versions like Knoppix (best live IMO) and Ubuntu.

Gentoo user here. Switched over 3 years ago after a friend recommended it.

Used RedHat before that, but I found that I'd started compiling all of my packages and had started creating rpms from them. Also, it was a pain to get the dependencies for some of them. Gentoo solved both of those problems, so I'm happy with it.

much agreed. If youre looking for a linux desktop, Ubuntu or kUbuntu (my pref, the KDE version) are the cream of the crop. If you want a linux server, Debian all the way.

I "use" Redhat the most at work, but I like Ubuntu for personal use.

I'm running Ubuntu. I was impressed by the ease of installation. On the very first attempt, it correctly identified all of my hardware and network settings. After a few clicks of the mouse to confirm my language, keyboard and time zone, everything installed automatically, including finding the partition I reserved for it. I spent four hours with Gentoo without success but Ubuntu only took about 20-30 minutes to install.
