View Full Version : Goodbye Wake

Super Typhoon Ioke, packing 160 mph winds, is expected to storm across Wake Island in the middle of nowhere in the Pacific. Wake Island figured in the Pacific War in WW2 and has been used as an emergency and refueling landing site for military and commercial aircrafts since then. It's a thin atoll about 8 feet high and may be wiped clean by Ioke. It has been designated in the National Register of Historic Place so it's sad to see places like that go.

I saw this on weather.com and I'm pretty surprised it's not getting more press.

This seems from what I'm reading to be a MONSTER storm that is just going to, as Bucc says, whipe Wake off the face of the earth.

Does anyone know if there's a chance that this hits any major land areas?

My grandma told me at a parade this year that chances are nobody here will be alive in 100 years. Fuck that island.

I got nothing.

If you got nothing, then throwing up brick after brick isn't gonna build you anything but a shithouse.

In the western Pacific, Super Typhoon Ioke (http://www.weather.com/maps/news/atlstorm5/westpacsat_large.html) (160 mph) is foreast to swirl very close to or over Wake Island on Wednesday night (U.S. time). About 200 people have been evacuated from the island. Unfortunately, if it holds its course, Ioke will likely submerge and devastate much of the island.

From weather.com.

I feel bad for basically only knowing that island's name through that game.

I know this is only Wikipedia, but it's the most convenient source, and I think the history is worth reading:

Axis and Allies was the first thing that jumped in my mind, as well.

I sincerely doubt there's going to be any major structural damage. Wake Island's infrastructure is probably similar to the Philippines' (a majority of the houses are made with concrete rather than wood materials), which means strong winds and rain won't be much of a problem.

We've already had 11 typhoons (4 of them Super Typhoons) hit or pass by the Philippines this year, and so far most of the real damage has been in the lowlands... but nothing major or truly catastrophic in a wide scale.

edit:

This little super typhoon right here (Yoyong) was a bad boy back in Nov. 2004, practically engulfed the Philippines and blasted it with 150 mph winds. It was the 4th typhoon to hit the Philippines in a span of two weeks.

I know this is only Wikipedia, but it's the most convenient source, and I think the history is worth reading:I don't get why people say this. I can understand how Wikipedia is bad on politically charged topics, but on something relatively esoteric like this, it seems Wikipedia is often as good or better than most encyclopedias. EDIT - I mean, it already has information on the evacuation with links to weather reports. Also, uh oh -
Wake Island first received international attention with the wreck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipwreck) of the Libelle. On the night of March 4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_4), 1866 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1866) the barque (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barque) Libelle of Bremen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bremen_%28city%29), Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany) struck the eastern reef (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reef) of Wake Island during a gale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gale). The ship was under the command of Captain Tobias and en route from San Francisco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco) to Hong Kong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong). Among its passengers were the famous opera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera) singer Anna Bishop (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Anna_Bishop&action=edit), her husband Martin Schultz (a New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City) diamond merchant) and three other members of an English opera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera) troupe.
After 21 days, the 30 stranded passengers and crew set sail in a longboat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longboat) and a gig (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain%27s_Gig) for the Spanish island of Guam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guam). The longboat, containing the opera troupe, Mr. Schultz and other passengers, arrived on Guam April 8 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_8). The gig, commanded by the Libelle’s captain, was lost at sea. While stranded on Wake Island, Captain Tobias had buried valuable cargo including 1,000 flasks (34,500 kg) of mercury (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_%28element%29), coins and precious stones worth approximately $150,000 and at least five ships conducted salvage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvage) operations in their recovery. The plight of the Libelle, its passengers and cargo was reported by many newspapers.Too much of a coincidence?
