So apparently this chick from CNN had a Frank Drebin moment in the bathroom during President Bush's speech yesterday. What I find hard to believe is not that she left he mic on, but that no one at CNN noticed and the entire thing was broadcast. Was everyone asleep??!!
Kyra Phillips: ""assholes.Yeah, I'm very lucky in that regard with my husband. My husband is handsome and he is genuinely a loving, you know, no ego.[unintelligible] you know what I'm saying. Just a really passionate, compassionate great, great human being. And they exist. They do exist. They're hard to find. Yup. But they are out there."
[unidentified woman]: "We'll see. He's going to come, you know, he's set for an extended visit.[unintelligible]"
Phillips: "I mean, that's, that's how you figure it all out, those extended visits. [laughter]"
[unidentified woman]: "Yeah, but my mom, I think she really likes him."
Phillips: "Mom's got a good vibe? Good."
[unidentified woman]: "Yeah, my brother's the one that.[unintelligible]"
Phillips: "Brother-of course, brothers have to be, you know, protective. Except for mine. I've got to be protective of him."
[unidentified woman [unintelligible]
Phillips: "Yeah. He's married, three kids, but his wife is just a control freak."
[unidentified woman #2]: "Kyra."
Phillips: "Yeah, baby?"
[unidentified woman #2]: "Your mic is on. Turn it off. It's been on the air."

I heard this clip today, and I was wondering how nobody managed to shut her mic off remotely. That's got to be possible. Anyway, I was really hoping that she would've said something far more interesting or funny. It's still amusing, though.

Could have been much worse for her (and better for us)

Yeah, it was embarrassing (you can hear the zip, for instance) but otherwise boring until the mention of the sister-in-law.

You have to be pretty happy if you're her husband, though. That will get you flowers every time.

Agreed. I actually sort of like that the fact that the first bit about her husband got on the air. It's nice to hear that kind of thing from people about their spouses. I have no idea Kyra Phillips or her husband is, but I like 'em already.
Kyra also seemed to be giving the woman she was talking to some good advice or at least encouragment.
Kudos to you, Mrs. Phillips.

Yeah, if it wasn't for that one remark about her sister-in-law, this would be 100% beneficial for her. I don't know who she is, but I have a positive opinion of her now.

Having run live mics a number of times, somebody in the control room should have killed the mic when Phillips left the studio. Maybe CNN runs a system where its up to the anchor, but that's unbelievably stupid.

Dola:
She's made some interesting on-air statements before:
Objectivity
Professional journalists are trained to follow certain journalism ethics. Kyra Phillips has been accused by peers for not maintaining proper objectivity and holding a conservative political bias.
Some examples of this are:
Phillips appeared unobjective by introducing a personal opinion into a round table discussion on July 12, 2005. On air, her statement that there was "definitely a major smear campaign going on" against White House adviser Karl Rove.[2]
While interviewing House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Phillips was accused by Pelosi of repeating the views of the Bush administration. Pelosi said "if you want to make a case for the White House, you should go on their payroll."[3]
Discussing Wikipedia on Live From... on December 5, 2005, Phillips said that the site gave an inaccurate impression of her as "a right-wing commie" because it included criticisms of her alleged conversative bias.[4]
Referring to the 2006 labor protests in France in which no one was killed, she said that the images of the demonstrations "Sort of brings back memories of Tiananmen Square, when you saw these activists in front of tanks."[5] CNN's Chris Burns told French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy that her comments were "regrettable".[6]

For the truly degenerate gamblers out there:
You can bet on whether or not Kyra Phillips is going to get the axe. (http://www.eog.com/news/industry-news.aspx?id=4790)

She might get "canned" (har har), but at least she's enjoying the moment...
NEW YORK (AP) -- CNN anchor Kyra Phillips, whose ladies room chatter found its way onto her newscast, bounced back two days later with a "Top 10 List" of excuses on the "Late Show with David Letterman."
The mishap had happened Tuesday when Phillips, still wearing her wireless microphone, visited the loo while CNN aired President Bush's speech from New Orleans. For a minute or so her voice commingled with his, as she was heard telling an unidentified woman how great her husband is, then mentioned that her sister-in-law is "a control freak." Only then was she alerted that her mike was live.
How could such a thing happen? A game but still embarrassed-looking Phillips set Letterman (and his CBS audience) straight -- or at least, left them laughing.
Top Ten Kyra Phillips Excuses Presented by CNN Anchor Kyra Phillips:
10. "Still haven't mastered complicated On/Off switch."
9. "Larry King told me he does this all the time."
8. "How was I supposed to know we had a reporter embedded in the bathroom?"
7. "I honestly never knew this sort of thing was frowned upon."
6. "Couldn't resist chance to win $10,000 on 'America's Funniest Home Videos."'
5. "I was set up by those bastards at Fox News."
4. "Oh, like YOU'VE never gone to the bathroom and had it broadcast on national television!"
3. "I just wanted that hunky Lou Dobbs to notice me."
2. "OK, so I was drunk and couldn't think straight."
1. "You have to admit, it made the speech a lot more interesting."
