You've done your damage, they're done for the year.

5 Starters injured (Varitek, Wily Mo Pena, Trot Nixon, Manny, Papi)
2 Starting pitchers injured (Wakefield and Lester)

The scary thing is now Lester's being scanned for CANCER due to his enlarged lymph nodes...

Come on, whoever's doing this, enough is too much already :)

I just posted about Lester in the MLB thread. I had no clue he was on the DL for something like that.

it was originally for back injuries suffered in a car crash during the Yankees series apparently, but a scan found the enlarged lymph nodes

Roxbury MA (AP) - A seven-year-old boy was at the center of a Boston

courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who

should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by

his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in
keeping

with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be

maintained to the degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him

more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her.

When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the

boy cried out that they also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning

that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the

judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who

should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child

welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Boston

Red Sox, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

The starting lineup for the Sox yesterday was depressing:

K Youkilis LF
A Cora SS
M Loretta DH
M Lowell 3B
G Kapler CF
D Mirabelli C
E Hinske RF
D Pedroia 2B
C Pena 1B

$120 Million payroll, and that's what they were able to come up with.

I hope Lester is ok, Cancer is a terribly evil disease...as for the Red Sox losing...that can go on forever. Them and my Blue Jays can see who limps into second in the East.

Not sure if this is curse-related, but it's definitely Sox-related:

Charlie Wagner, one of the ambassadors of the game of baseball and for the Boston Red Sox, passed away Wednesday night at the age of 93.

Wagner first joined the Red Sox organization in 1935 and played with Boston from 1938 to 1946 compiling a 38-23 record with a 3.91 ERA.

Wagner was also a roommate of Hall of Famer Ted Williams and Wagner has a street named after him at the Red Sox Spring Training complex in Fort Myers, Florida.

He was a longtime coach and instructor with the Red Sox and received a World Series ring in 2004.

Wagner was at a minor league game in Reading, Pennsylvania Wednesday night. As per his custom, he went to his car in the 7th inning. It was there he passed away from natural causes.

Starting David Pauley, Kason Gabbard, Julian Tavarez back to back, with Mark Loretta as our 3-hitter and Javy Lopez featuring prominently, I am beginning to get a feeling what it's like to be a Royals fan.

Of course, Julian Tavarez did just start and beat Roy Halladay (due to a miracle gaffe from Alex Rios) so who knows anymore.

But the thing is, it costs a little more than $3.00 a box seat to see the Red Sox.

And Lester does have a version of cancer. *sighs*

BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox rookie pitcher Jon Lester has a form of lymphoma and will begin treatment within the week, the team said Friday.

The 22-year-old left-hander was placed on the disabled list Monday with back pain, but tests revealed enlarged lymph nodes. The team said Lester has a treatable form of anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

and the sidebar at ESPN explains it.

on-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is cancer of the cells of the lymphatic system. In non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, cells in the lymphatic system divide and grow without order or control, or old cells do not die as cells normally do. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma can start almost anywhere in the body. It may occur in a single lymph node, in a group of lymph nodes, or in an organ such as the spleen. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma can spread to almost any part of the body, including the liver, bone marrow, and spleen.

Over time, lymphoma cells replace the normal cells in the bone marrow. This causes bleeding problems and infections. As the lymphoma cells spread, the body becomes less and less able to produce blood cells that carry oxygen to other tissues or to protect itself from infection.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is different from Hodgkin's lymphoma and occurs about eight times more often.

Yes, because all of these teams who have been to World Series in the last 15 years are so hard up. Shouldn't someone take the curse off the Brewers, for instance? Or, again, the Cubs- they seem to have a smidge of futility going for (against) them.

It's not that. It's that many of the guys can't hit all of a sudden. Or the manager trading away a promising young pitcher for a washed-up "closer" who is apparently being paid by Steinbrenner. Or more of the freakish injuries, like Manny going down at exactly the wrong time.

Or just generally blowing big division leads in the fall which has been a bad habit of theirs for a long time.
