Today the NCAA annouces a new playoff format for college football. The post season will now consist of a 24 team tournament. Teams winning the top eight conferences will receive first-round byes.

What? Did you hear that honey?

Coach, you're retired.

I know honey, but how many times have you heard me moan about bowl games? I mean, this is what I've wanted for years.

Listen, you don't possibly have the time to even consider a coaching job with your current schedule. What about your company? What about US, the kids?

Well, even if I did consider making some phone calls, I wouldn't begin thinking about coaching again without my two best friends, Ardent and Blade. Those two guys were the only reason we won any games. (laughs)

After you quit on them and Missouri? (laughs) I don't think they'd be stupid enough to join you once again on your quest for greatness. (laughs louder)

Funny, funny.. ha-ha. Well smartypants, I did do some research and it just so happens there's a new conference called the Solecismic Eight.. and I'll have you know St. Louis now has a team.

(silence)

Oh brother... just remember, you won't be able to have as much involvement as you used to.

I know, and I have no idea what's going on with Ardent or Blade or if they would even entertain the idea of coaching with me and taking on major roles with a low prestige team like St. Louis. They'll probably laugh at me and that will be the end of this talk.

(wife turns around and leaves)

Now, where is my phone book?

I leave both of them messages.

Ardent - This will be YOUR offense. I have enough to worry about with my company to run and recruiting. My time is limited and coaching St. Louis would be much less time consuming than a Big 12 team. I know I quit on you, but I'm really excited about the new playoff format.

Blade - This is YOUR defense. Like I've told Ardent, my time is limited and I think coaching in the Sol 8 would be perfect for the three of us. Less time is a good thing as we'll be able to go slower than before.

Either way guys, I will NOT do this without the both of you, period. At least give me a call to let me know how things are going for both of you. Like I said, I can't believe I'm doing this, but you only live once.

Take care and tell your families hello for me.

I called a buddy of mine and he told me St. Louis has not yet found a head coach, but are definitly looking.

I submit my credentials to the AD at St. Louis and in a little over 8 hours I hear the news.

Official press release:

Today, we are proud to announce the new St. Louis head coach, Todd Volmert and his staff. We hope to provide our fans with an exciting brand of football as we believe we've picked a coach who exemplifies winning and sportsmanship.

I look at the printout that sits on my desk and see we are ranked dead last at #125 for the inaugural season in the Sol 8. Should be nothing but uphill from here on out.

You both know the drill. I want to show the AD who he's just signed to control the football team.

We need to know who to redshirt, who to start, who to cut. What offense and defense to run, etc.. I don't need to tell you what you already know how to do. I have some work of my own to do, so get back to me as soon as you can.

Thanks gentlemen! I look foward into building this team into a Sol 8 Champion!!

I press Print and the Print Screen comes up

I click okay and a box pops up that says Print to File and asks for an output file name.

I type in one and click okay.

You know me, I'm ball control most of the time. I'd like to see if Wilks could possibly move to guard. He might transition, drop, and still be better than Higginbotham. We're going to be fielding a few walk ons on the line, which isn't good.

Speaking of not good, our whole offense is not good. I'd suggest we implement the NTO, the No Talent Offense.

That means, Double Wing. We don't need a QB, we don't need a receiver, and we can run the clock out by running the ball most of the time.

I would suggest we adjust the game plan to run more...and by more about 98% of the time, win or lose. We simply don't have the ends or receivers to compete passing the ball.

I would like to see if Flannery can move to RB. He could definitely help us by taking the ball and heading upfield on a 26 Toss. See if we can move a receiver or two to the secondary, to tight end, running back, or to fullback...or they're just not going to see the field in the double wing. We'll need no more than 3 receivers if they stay healthy.

My bold players depict the moves I've suggested.

Sorry about that. Next time, though, add the directory and/or folder that you want the file to go to the file name. Example:

c:\TCYfiles\wk4boxscore.txt

That always does the trick for me.

By the way, nice to see another TCY dynasty up!

That's your problem. After you hit print, click the drop down and select Generic/Text as your printer, NOT DeltaSig. If you can't do that, then you set it up wrong. Add a printer and for the printer select Generic, the on the right side select generic/text.

I usually let my coaches handle the gameplan, but I'll intervene somewhat.

Next question then, thinking of the future of this team.. I guess recruiting is wide open? We need just about every position. :)

btw, we open against #6 Georgia. Our stadium holds 28,000 and the AD has told me they sold a whopping 1100 tickets. St. Louis welcomes college football. :o

Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate
Castillo, Troy 74 DE Jr 41 50
Hadley, Brian 99 DE Sr* 23 23
Stuart, Marty 78 DE Sr* 20 21
Latimer, Tommy 76 DE* Jr* 7 31
Walters, Edgar 75 DE* So* 2 9
* in eligibility - Player has been red-shirted. * in position - Player is
walk-on.
Outlook:Tony is our best player on the whole team right now. Hes also a junior, and will quite a weapon for us over the next 2 seasons. Thats where the good news ends. Hadley is the best of a bad bunch, but stuart is on his tail. Latimer will be counted on to develop quite a bit this offseason, but it doesnt look promising. Our pass rush will fall heavily onto castilo's shoulders. All 4 but castillo have been redshirted too, so we pretty much just praying tony doesnt get hurt.

Recruiting Need: Whatever we can get. We graduate 3 of the 5, but the other 2 staying withtony are terrible walk-ons. At least 1 should be required, but as you will see at every position, we need whatever we can get.

Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate
Rivera, Roosevelt 98 DT Jr 14 14
McCray, Kirk 94 DT Sr 9 19
Dyson, Shaun 90 DT* Fr 3 3
Raymond, Courtney 70 DT* So* 0 0
* in eligibility - Player has been red-shirted. * in position - Player is
walk-on.
Outlook: DE makes this group looks like little girls. Rivera is the starter, but basically this position can be summed up as i pray every team we play likes to pass the ball. This might indicate a need for a 3-4, but we have to check out the LB talent first.

Courtney Raymond deserves his own line...he is a 0-0...it takes real skill to be THAT bad. Bravo courtney

Recruiting Need: We dont need bodies like DE, but we need talent worse here then DE. This is a major weakpoint for us.

Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate
Grant, Gerald 55 ILB Sr 19 19
Pauley, Jamal 44 ILB* So* 4 4
Rose, Darnell 57 ILB* So* 4 4
Yamada, Brad 40 ILB* Fr 4 18
* in eligibility - Player has been red-shirted. * in position - Player is
walk-on.
Outlook: Its like seeing DT all over again...this is going to be a very long season im thinking. Grant obviously starts, and we let the other platoon behind in in the 4-3 we have to run now. Yamada will most likely redshit.

Recruiting Outlook: Just 1 kid, but like everywhere anyone going to be an upgrade over this sorry bunch.

Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate
Thrasher, Matt 93 OLB Sr 34 51
Banks, Tito 58 OLB Jr* 12 12
Williamson, Ed 59 OLB Fr 7 37
Hackett, Jared 42 OLB Jr* 3 4
Burns, Leo 56 OLB* Fr 3 19
* in eligibility - Player has been red-shirted. * in position - Player is
walk-on.
Outlook: Finally, another player who can play. Thrasher will be counted on to live up to his namesake. Tito will start as well, and im starting to hope other teams dont even have offenses or were screwed.

Recruiting Need:Were far more set here then other positions. Williamson has future and burns can be average. Will prob. need 1 body, but not desperate.

Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate
Rose, William 20 CB Sr 21 21
Whitfield, Austin 26 CB Sr* 11 36
Woodson, Joel 27 CB So* 11 11
Strong, Edgar 24 CB* Fr 3 3
Ward, Burt 34 CB* Fr 0 7
* in eligibility - Player has been red-shirted. * in position - Player is
walk-on.
Outlook: Well, Rose will start for better or worse. And i think whitfield should pair with him as we hope he develops over his senior season. Woodson is a better back-up then we have at some other positions, though the future looks grim here.

Recruiting Need:We need 2 prob. as the only two talented ones graduate. More pressing need for sure here then some others, though DT should still be priority #1

Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate
Martin, Harry 49 S Sr 21 25
Spann, Antonio 36 S So* 21 49
King, Brandon 48 S So 13 37
Collins, Fred 22 S Fr 4 31

* in eligibility - Player has been red-shirted. * in position - Player is
walk-on.
Outlook: Martin starts, as well as spann. This position is by far our best looking. We have 3 young players with potential to be solid starters for us. I guess the AD decided to let me see the best last, and im happy to go off on such a note. This will be a key for the team in years to come.

Recruiting Need:We need 1 body, but not a pressing need. We are far mroe set here then anywhere else. This is the one position im happy with. Those youngsters look really good.

Team Outlook: 4-3 is the most fitting with our lack of depth at ILB. We might consider putting castillo and thrasher on opposite sides of the field to balance out our talent. If you want to stack them both on the strongside for example, that might work as well, but id reccoment splitting them up. Our secondary, for now, is a little weak, but not terrible like DE and ILB. Our middle is just terrible, and most of the damage done to our D should come right up the middle. We need help at those 2 positions badly.

Redshirts:

Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate
Yamada, Brad 40 ILB* Fr 4 18
Burns, Leo 56 OLB* Fr 3 19 (after willaimson)
Williamson, Ed 59 OLB Fr 7 37
Collins, Fred 22 S Fr 4 31

Other players could be red-shirted, but i dont see a need to keep around some of them longer. I expect our recruits to out-class these "studs" soon enough, so this group should be good enough for now. Burns is only to be red-shirted if we can red-shirt more OLBs after williamson.

Thanks D Coach!!

Outstanding from the both of you and it's time for me to start earning my money. I'll setup everything, make the necessary changes per your posts and get this team ready for practice.

From there, TCY helper will give me some guidance on time allotments and I believe our AD has this year's schedule printed up.

I'm a little disappointed in the ticket sales, but I would think everything from this point on can only get better.

See you both at practice!

I think a 5-6 season would be pretty good for us..im expecting more along the lines of a 3-8 season though.

I'm with you. We'll lost to whom we are supposed to, and sneak about 3 wins in our conference.

I predict 3-8 as well.

#6 Georgia welcomes us into the NCAA with the worst loss I've ever experienced in TCY. We did stop them on their first drive! They had 92,100 fans at the game. That's 91,000 more than we sold season tickets.

Well, I've talked with you offline already, but I need to go on the record as to we're throwing too much. This is the NTO. We're not very talented on offense. I don't know how we are on defense because I worry too much about the offense.

I do know that if we run the ball 3 times and punt, we eat up nearly 2 minutes of the clock. An incomplete pass stops the clock. An interception is the worst thing imagineable. We're not talented offensively. We can't put the defense in situations that are bad for the team. Interceptions do that. How do we stop interceptions and incomplete passes? We don't throw the ball.

Recruiting: Don't RECRUIT A QB!!! Stop that right now. Likewise, don't recruit receivers. Recruit run blocking linemen and run blocking tight ends. You recruit a quarterback and he won't learn to pass from me. He's going to learn the chop block and the lead block. He'll be on the sled with the rest of the team. Basically, right now our quarterback only needs to breathe and lob the ball on a corner route to the tight end. 5 times a game, max.

Receivers? We don't need receivers. Receivers are wimps who refuse steroids, anyways.Use our recruiting budget on backs and linemen. I include tight ends with our linement, just like ol' Don Warren.

Recruit for the defense first.

Defense wins championships. I'm trying to not lose the game for us.Give me some big ol' country boys on the line and someone who wants the rock 30 times. That's all I want.Glad we got that first win. Hopefully we impressed some recruits.

Recruit a kid with a 4.0 GPA, then. Pitch the ball, hand the ball off, and block.

By the way, I don't want the option run in our offense.

Coach, I've come up with a new play that we can use whenever we're down by 42 again.

I call it the "we won't lose by more than 49" play.

Here's what I need to make it work, besides your cooperation.

First, we'll try to get as many first downs as we can, but to ensure we don't fumble, we'll only run quarterback sneaks.

On fourth down is where my new play will come into effect.

We'll line up in a tight, really tight punt formation. We'll run the clock down as far as we can. We snap the ball to our fastest player, who is back there acting like our punter. Our fastest man takes the ball and runs to our endzone and waits.

Everyone else will tackle an opponent. This is critical. We must not let any of their players get to our fastest guy. We must tackle, tackle, tackle. Hold that man down. Don't let him get up. Don't let him get to our man with the ball.

Imagine how much time we can take off the clock like that!

I know, we can't hope to keep them on the ground forever. I understand that. When they get near our guy, he can run to the other side of the endzone, and then take a safety.

What if they call holding or some other lame penalty? Well, the other team will probably decline it, since they're getting the ball anyway and 2 points.

Let's say, for grins, they accept the penalty. Sweet. Run the ""we won't lose by more than 49" play again. I'd say we can't lose, but in reality, if we're running this play, we're already losing.

I bet we won't allow 80 points again with this sound strategy. What do you think?

As I went out onto the field to shake the UWV's head coach, I whispered in his ear.. "I won't forget this game".. he kind of looked at me with a surprise and I said, "You know what I'm talking about".. I know in college football, teams like to run up the score, but they were relentless when it was clear going into the 4th quarter down 45-0, who was going to win this one. I was just a little perturbed I guess.

Most of those were late in the game as our defense had a lapse. I've been tweaking the carries up, I guess I need to keep going.

I'd rather we just run out the clock if we get too far behind. We don't have the horses or the carriage for a passing game.

Unfortunetly, you can't call plays in TCY.. but I'll see what I can do with the gameplan.

Edit: honestly, there's not a lot within the gameplan to do things like this.. I have running mostly on 97% for a lot of the downs and yardage.

:D I've never used that program. I always just let the assistants handle the time management... adds an extra layer of challenge and reduces a TON of the headache from the game.

Well, we were down 31, it's hard to stop the passing even if it's at 99. The only other suggestion I could make is to make sure our passing plays are for moderate to long distance plays. If we're in a situation to pass, a screen pass for 3 or an out pattern for 5 yards won't do us much good.

It's true, though. He's not going to help us academically. I hope we can keep him eligible. I usually filter out any recruit not getting a 1000 on the test score. That way I don't have to worry about anyone but the walkons staying eligible.

I did like that we came back at the end to make it close...It's unfortunate we kept throwing the ball to try and get it that way, though. Wright was 5 of 7 and 2 TDs? Start that man!

After their final touchdown, I doubt the game was in doubt again until those final seconds, which makes me feel the final two scores were more cosmetic than anything.

I stopped that when one of my instructors glared at me and asked how old I was during Vietnam. I felt about an inch tall.

Actually, yes! I'd sacrifice quarterbacks and receiver scholarships to give you, say 8 new bodies on defense. No sweat at all.

I love you guys. When I get home tomorrow, I'm going to play TCY like no other. I'm going to mow the lawn and finish this season. :)

Defense is coming, believe me. I still LOVE offense... and even though you want smash mouth football, I want a QB who can at least make a pass when it counts and on OL who can block for a good HB.

Me and a couple of my friends are going to make the road trip down to Joplin. It would be nice to knock those guys out of the playoff hunt. We also heard if you bring a can of food they will let you into the game! Know of any good strip clubs in the area?

(It's been a fun read so far, unfortunatly it looks like it might take you 20 years to become respectable. Let's at least try and get a home and home with Mizzou!)

Even after the disappointment, I can definitly see some positives from this teams first year. Recruiting seems to be going well and there are some standouts from this year. I will follow the playoffs as this season finishes with us and looks for the 2004 National Champion.

AE and Blade - name your players of the year!

Troy Castillo was every bit the leader we needed him to be, though a few more sacks would have been nice. He still easily lead the team in tackles, TFL, and assists. He is the Defensive MVP.

S Antonio Spann was the suprise player of the year, picking off 6 passes and deflecting 3 more from his #2 safety spot.

Dissapointment of the year was LB Matt Thrasher. Expected to carry the LB core, he turned out to be just average and didnt play up to his ability.

I'd like more information on my recruits, please. Like everything you can give me. Like strength, weakness, HT, WT, HS stats. The whole ball of wax.

Outside looking in, I'm fairly disappointed our best player coming in offensively is a quarterback. Personally, I'd rather our best player have been a linemen.

Beating the dead horse, I know, but please recruit closer to home and don't recruit a quarterback or receiver this upcoming season. Please.

Personally, my goal right now is to get the best players in the state of Missouri. Lock the borders down. If you're All-State in Missouri, then you're going to be a Billiken. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. I don't even care if they idolize Cape or not. Unless of course, you're a quarterback or receiver. Heck, I'd even bend on that if you recruited them from MO instead of Moose Lake, Minnesota, or Chula Vista, CA. We'll have a much better chance at recruits that are looking to be close to home than anything else right now. We can work on Illinois as well. Right across the river, so a lot of schools are close. CLOSE.

If we can beat the other Sol 8 schools to the recruits in state then we're going to hammer them. Physically. Mentally. Make THEM work for recruits out of state and use those recruiting points (I forget what they're called) to travel to California, Kansas, wherever. They won't get the All State players in a state they don't play in. It won't happen. They'll end up with some retreads from New Jersey or Wyoming. Remember, every time we travel out of state for a recruit, a kitten dies.

Once we control Missouri, we can take the battle outside the state.

Focus on next season:

Depth.

We need two running backs in this next class. We need at least two tight ends, two tackles, and a guard. Add another fullback and center as well. I'm not high on Winters.

Once again, I wouldn't bother with quarterback, wide receiver, or for that matter, a kicker. Give our walk ons the chance to dream.

That may be asking too much, since we'll only have 16 scholarships available for the year, right? If we split the scholarships evenly, give me what I requested above, just one running back instead.

Taking away the seniors I expect to lose, here's who we have left on offense.

QB J.T. McWilliams (Calhoun, GA) (56+)
Wright, Freddie 4 QB Jr* 13 13
Hawkins, Scott 7 QB Fr 7 7
Linquist, Kennedy 16 QB Jr* 7 29

Our spring game won't be pretty. Hopefully your boy looks good this summer. Otherwise, maybe Linquist does a little bit better.

RB Skip Wilson (Souderton, PA) (49-)
Kaplan, Jeff 46 RB Jr 15 35
Lane, Jim 39 RB So 14 39
Morton, Gary 38 RB Jr 14 14
Doran, Jumbo 30 RB Fr 7 29

We lost both starters. Wilson may start as well, which doesn't say much for our backs. If Doran redshirted and improves enough, he and Kaplan may be 1 and 2.

FB Ethan Grant (Lansing, IL) (47+)
Hayes, Thurman 32 FB So 12 13
Pritchett, Chad 41 FB Fr 8 28
Moorman, Kendall 29 FB Fr 2 14

We were really weak at FB last year, moving our de facto FB to RB. Pritchett may beat out Hayes, but he'll have to hold off Grant. Maybe Grant hates his HS coach for not letting him play RB? Maybe we could give him a shot?

Villasenor, Claude 91 TE Fr 18 32
Lucas, Bennie 92 TE So 15 38
Keefe, Don 96 TE Fr 8 8

We are super hurting here. No incoming help, and I think we may have gained a walk on here that I don't know about. Maybe we could move one of our 9,000 receivers, one of our bigger boys, to tight end.

We need two recruits at this position this year.

WR Dave Valle (Highland Park, IL) (49-)
Blackwell, R.J. 84 WR Jr 17 17
Bitkowski, Gary 80 WR So 16 20
Manning, Jeremy 87 WR Jr* 11 29
Hastings, Bernie 8 WR So* 6 24
Flowers, Jesse 5 WR* Fr 7 10
Cash, Juan 9 WR* Fr 5 14
Dillon, Malcolm 82 WR* So* 2 30

No starters in this group, technically. We don't need em. Move em somewhere, take away their scholarships if they ain't smart. Something. That said, Manning and Valle will probably be our first options when we're behind by a bunch.

C Juan Winters (St. Louis, MO) (43-)
Reese, Ricky 54 C So* 9 46

No depth. No returning starter. We're young here, though, so we may get away without recruiting a center. Not sure who will win this battle.

G Adam Finley (Crestwood, KY) (46+)
G Bernard Talley (Sterling, VA) (55+)
Higginbotham, Roger 68 G Fr 9 15
Talley, Nicky 64 G Jr* 8 17
Horner, Wally 72 G Fr 6 35

Another group with no returning starter. Both freshmen could make an impact.

T Cornell Meyer (Carthage, MO) (35++)
Thomas, Juan 71 T So 37 69
Covington, Norbert 60 T So* 10 10

Our only returning starter and an obvious lack of depth. We need two tackles this season. NEED. Meyer is going to step in at right tackle immediately.

P Mercury Graveson (San Francisco, CA) (79-)
Gerhardt, Karl 1 P So* 20 20
Cochrane, Leonard 12 K Jr* 37 37
Gaines, Devin 13 K Jr 25 51

Well, we can ignore special teams for a while.

Maybe you could impress me and tell me that Skip ran for 2000 yards last year.

IE, I'd like to see the stats of our new recruits, even if it's just "9 games played". I like to use that, based solely on my own belief, to see if a recruit may be injury prone for me.

Poli

I wonder if ol' McWilliams ran the ball much in Georgia. I could modify the playbook if he does. Of course, we'd be one injury away from a hurt locker.

Well, given our running back situation, we're already in a hurt locker. :)

Thank god my D carries this squad...shame my counterpart on offense cant work the same magic with his unit. I think those 10 extra games i got in made all the difference in ability :)

I can see two a days already.

I'm telling our freshmen linemen who are pressed into starting to be more physical and explaining they need to block down, block down, block down. Backside linemen need to pull on that toss!

I'm making the receivers run a mile, just to get them out of my way.

I'm telling the fullback to block out our defensive end. Eat him alive!

I'm making the whole offense hit the blocking sleds, including the quarterbacks. Make that the whole offense except the receivers, who are running another mile.

I'm telling McWilliams that he is never to call an audible.

I'm praying Skip and McWilliams stay healthy all season.

I'm hoping Blade will take a receiver or three over to defense.

I'm going to enjoy two a days.

Coach, I took the liberty to mail out information packets to potential recruits within the Missouri area. Well, except players that project to be quarterbacks or receivers. I even mailed them out to defensive players; no need to thank me, blade. :)

I was thinking we needed to run a running game camp as well as a defense camp. We could run a passing game camp, but well, you know. We could invite a number of our potential recruits for free.

We could also hold a coaching clinic. Bring in a few guest speakers and such. Invite all the local coaches for free. Any PR is good PR, no what I mean?
