Post your game and release date predictions in the thread. Here's the pertinent info from http://www.solecismic.com
While the last two years have been more family-focused, with no new products seeing release, 2006 will mark several changes for the company. We will release a fully updated version of one of our football games this year. We will also move our office (and home) to Michigan at the start of 2007 to be closer to family.

New FOF will be just fine, too, though. :)

Yeah, I thought threads like these were usually posted by new members, which inevitably turns into to an argument and then skydog locks the thread or it is deleted?
But I still answered the poll:rolleyes:
So does full version release of one, mean a patch or update release of the other?

I'm still holding out hope that the game is a merge of the TCY/FOF franchises into a single football game, ala CM/FM.

Actually, I believe I post one of these every year.
That being said, I've NEVER understand the new-member-post-asking-about-the-new-game phenomena. I'd presume that a new member who is familiar with past versions of FOF got here by linking from solecismic.com, where there is information that none of them seem to know about. Strange.

I'm thinking FOF6. I think that the more Jim sees multiplayer play out, the more he sees ways to make it really, really good. And he does not want to wait to do that.
I'm hoping, however, for TCY2

Yeah, I think some people forget that the TCY has not undergone the morphing that FOF has. FOF has gone through the Fourth Edition and 2004 since TCY was released (what, like 5 years ago?)
If TCY2 were the new game, it would likely borrow of what Jim did in FOF 2004
Translation: Whatever game it is, it will have a better than average shot of being good.

I hope that its FOF6...if I want a college game than Bowl Bound is more than satisfactory. That being said, Jim's quote was numerous months ago and things could change. IMO, no one has to hold Jim, or Jim himself, to his quote. That was just his thoughts/opinions a while ago.

I'm surprised SD did this poll, because I would expect him to be one of the first to know which game it's going to be (besides Jim & his crack 3-person beta team, of course).
Since our favorite game designer has moved on to Mr. Gindin's Dream House, I haven't much cared what he does. When the game comes out, I'll evaluate its merits and demerits then.

I was also surprised that Skydog posted this poll. If anyone has inside info, it would be him. This was encouraging.

At this point, my only real interest is in the historical leagues, and things are running just fine. i can't really think of anything that I need in a new version that wouldn't probably have a poor trade-off in terms of existing data, so I would vote for "irrelevant".
I voted October 2006, FOF6 and i really hope it is, i need a pro game way more than a college one as BBCF is fun enought for me.
About Skydog starting this thread... i think and it's only a guess that he knows more than that he wants us to know, probably he knows that a release is comming and just wants some fun and to create a bit of hype in the community, to put us on a good mood. One of the proofs for me is that i haven't seen him voting, the other is that he usually hates this kind of threads so why to start one himself? did jbmagic wash Skydog's brain finally? Of course it's just a guess and he won't tell us what we would like to know.

The last FOF game is much, much closer to something that could stand out in the 2006/2007 text game market, while TCY would take a huge overhall. Considering how uninterested in programming games Jim seems to have been in recent years, it just seems like FOF would be the faster project, and best bet.

I wouldn't say he's been uninterested, but other more important things (i.e. raising a family, building a house, etc) have his life tied up. I applaud him for putting those interests ahead of us who "want a new game".
But seriously Jim, release the game.......anytime now........we're not waiting or anything...

I would say he's been uninterested. It's not intended as a criticism when I say it, and I don't think molson meant it as one either, but with all of the things you listed I do think that Jim simply has felt the need to be programming.

I'm thinking FOF6. I think that the more Jim sees multiplayer play out, the more he sees ways to make it really, really good. And he does not want to wait to do that.
My thinking too. I think IHOF has given Jim a ton of insight into multiplayer and its potential.

OK. Did I miss what you thought was striking?
I guess so. And I actually thought you got what I meant & was just kidding about it being the time thing, so we were really off.
What jumped out at me was the date on the previous poll, which sort of provided a stark reminder that the conversation is the same now as it was two years ago.

I'm guessing most likely November, and most likely a new TCY. For the same reasons others have mentioned (TCY's age, integrating some of FOF's advances) TCY seems to make the most sense. But I'll buy anything, and I'll probably even buy two copies so I can have it on my work computer. :)

If the next release is TCY, and it merely brings TCY up to the level of FOF 2K4, I will be hugely bummed. When you look at the other text sims that have come out in the last two years, FOF 2k4 really starts to show its age. Does it make more sense to bring TCY up to a level that is already somewhat obsolete, or to bring FOF up to a cutting-edge level?
To be honest, I am far from certain that I'll ever see TCY2 during my lifetime.

It has been my perceptions that time spent working on graphics is time that should have been spent on gameplay and game engine issues.
I personally find that graphics are the kiss of death to text-sims. It's pretty, it gets folks excited, it gets people buying the game in pre-order fashion. And it usually results in bland/blah/ho-hum reviews. I don't buy games just to buy them. I buy them to play them.
I'm not saying it should be ugly, I just want functionality. With graphics as an enhancement. I have grown increasingly annoyed by the graphic first text-based games. Who gives a shit about graphics if the game engine underneath is buggy?
FOF2k4 gets more playing-time on my laptop than every other game combined. And on my office PC, it get's more playing time than all the other text-sims combined.

I don't mind the ability to customize logos, but to add graphics to a text-based game only succeeds in annoying the heck out of me.

Even if they are on the level of Champman\EHM? I agree with you to a point, but I really believe the graphics of some of the SI games really help the immersion factor, with player pictures and the match engine. A little time spent on some eye candy might actually help sales of his game, perhaps.

I think Jim Jensen's next game will have him starting as a kicker in the GEFL.
That's what ardent enthusiest told me anyway...
Jim Jensen says it will be TCY 2.
Adapted from a Justin Harrell/Chuck Norris bit I saw a day or two ago.
--Life doesn't give Jime Jensen lemons. Life asks him which fruit he wants.
--Jim Jensen's calender goes from March 31st to April 2nd, no one fools with Jim Jensen.
--If it tastes like chicken, looks like chicken, and feels like chicken, but Jim Jensen says its beef, then it's f'ing beef.
--Jim Jensen once won a game of Connect 4 in 3 moves.
--It's no use crying over spilled milk... Unless that was Jim Jensen's milk. Oh you are so screwed.
--Superman's only weakness is Kryptonite. Jim Jensen laughs at Superman for having a weakness.
--The truth may hurt, but it doesn't hurt as much as Jim Jensen.
--Jim Jensen once arm wrestled Superman. The stipulations were the loser had to wear his underwear on the outside of his pants.
--Jim Jensen wasn't born, he was unleashed.
--Jim Jensen once visited the Virgin Islands. They are now The Islands.
--"Simon Says" should be renamed "Jim Jensen Says" because if Jim Jensen says something then you better fricking do it.
--Every mathematical inequality officially ends with "< Jim Jensen"
--When you open a can of whoop-ass, Jim Jensen jumps out.
--When Batman is in trouble, he turns on the Jim Jensen signal.
--When Jim Jensen pees into the wind, the wind changes direction.
--You can lead a horse to water. Jim Jensen can make him drink.
--The Incredible Hulk once got so angry that it turned into Jim Jensen.
--Jim Jensen went out to the desert, and was bitten by a rattlesnake. The snake died.
--Your attraction to Jim Jensen in no way affects your sexual orientation.
--Jim Jensen tells Bob Barker when the price is right.
--It is a known fact that when Time magazine awards "The Man of Year*", there is fine print on the bottom of the cover that says, " *besides Jim Jensen."
--Jim Jensen doesn't make threats. He makes facts.
--Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Franklin D. Roosevelt never met Jim Jensen.
--When Jim Jensen turns on an Xbox the screen just says "You Win" and turns itself off again.
--G.I. Joe has Jim Jensen action figures.
and of course,
--Superman wears Jim Jensen pajamas.

If the graphics are what makes EHM and ChampMan so slow, then no, I wouldn't want that type of immersion. If it takes 2 hours to run an FOF season (without any input from me) I will severely be disappointed.

Well, personally, I think your motive is to feign lack of knowledge in the flavor and date of the upcoming release.
You and Jim are just going to have to live with the fact that you being in this position means people assume you are an unofficial part of Solecismic software. It's not personal, people would assume that no matter who ran this site. The worst part for you, if you (for some reason that eludes me) don't want that believed by this site's patrons is that denials only reinforce the concept.

The thing to watch, however, is not the depth or timing of the secrecy but in the control of the negative vibes that will come out when the games is announced or released. Such negative vibes permeate every single game that has been released in the internet era and nowhere is it more evident than here at FOFC where we discuss a lot of new games (unlike most sites that focus on one game/series). Of course it's always a minority (except in the case of M-F) but there will be something else going on. There are some animosity built up at other sites against FOFC, perhaps just waiting to pounce on whatever Sol does. We have always let such things run its course but I do wonder if they will be more harsh this time? Look at the effort to pounce on and quash rumors when all game have rumors and false perceptions.

exactly.
i think in Bucc's fairy tale of a convoluted post he was trying to say that there will be a massive grass roots campaign to defecate on the next Solecismic game. how he came to that conclusion is beyond me. what, cuz of the MF thread? that thread stopped being about MF a long time ago and devolved into "how can i be the funniest person in this thread". even in that thread people were willing to give the game a shot, and someone even bought it and tested it out. FOFC may not be a lot of things, but at the very least there's an eagerness to talk about other games and if they got something good going for them we give props. to say that there's forums out there that are secretly plotting to get their revenge on FOFC or Solecismic, like we're all a bunch of fraternity forums looking to one-up the other is crap thinking. when has this been done before first of all, and where is the evidence that we should expect anything out of the oridnary? or is Bucc in-tune with the Force and can sense the mounting aggression?

I was a bit thrown by Bucc's post, but I thought maybe one of the other text sim boards had animosity towards FOFC, since I don't read those.
The only two places I can think of are sportsdigs and M-F. And ifyou look at the activity there, I don't see how there could be any organized effort to make any sort of attack on Sol or FOFC when a game is announced. I have no doubt that there are people with the desire there, but just not the manpower.

I got to remember not to post right before I have to leave for work without editing or at least, proof-read. However it was written, one could not conclude anything that 1) was factual since it's all speculation or 2) assume there will be a massive grassroots efforts. There will, however, be some posts saying that the game is boring or unplayable or stupid just like we see in every single review/impression of all of the games here. I was just commenting on the nature of internet gaming forums and the hype and/or high expectation that goes with the territory. It seems that the critical time is right after release where word of mouth can make or break some sales. Why do you think Jim and Arlie do not play the hype game anymore?

Before anyone stupidly speculate, for the past couple of years, I have strongly advocated the philosophy of: if you don't like the game or it does not meet your expectations, shut up and move on to something else. The ravings and rantings about "unplayable" games here really are annoying.

Sometimes its good to speak up.
If you don't they might not think there anything wrong with the game.
I think developer like to hear the negatives also about the game. If everyone is quiet, nothing will get improve or fix.

Delays? Things don't always come out as scheduled/planned and (sorry if I speak for all who have voted 2007) I just have a feeling it will be bumped back.
Its also a way to be pleasantly surprised. Rather than believe it will be out in the next month and it doesn't and get more anxious, I choose to believe in my mind that it will be out in 2007. That way if it comes out earlier, it will be a nice gift for the holidays. Kind of like reverse psychology on myself:D

I can't tell for sure but that looks like a "confused" type smiley.
Or an "umm ..." smiley.
If so, I figure that there's a certain percentage of people who just don't believe they're going to see a game this calendar year. And, as we sorta discussed earlier, after speculating for 2 years without a release, that seems like a pretty reasonable guess.
Personally, I think a game is finished & has been for at least a while, it's just being held up to hit a release targeted for X date (for whatever reason). But I can certainly understand people having their doubts at this point too.

While I can understand not hyping a game, there's a difference in Jim and Arlie that most developers don't have in that they have an established record of games and/or franchises and a sizeable core fanbase.
For a new developer, or one who's pedigree isn't established, hype is necessary to build brand image and awareness before the game releases.

jbmagic is beta tester, use reverse sykology. Can you imagine the collaborative efforts of Jim and jbmagic on the manual? The possibilities stagger the mind:
Zone defense say that pass defenders is responsible for there area of the field and not cover a specific receiver.
2-deep zone mean there only two zone far downfield (usually covered by the safeties), the rest of the zone start at the line of scrimmage.
4-deep zone mean there four zones downfield.
you want to know what better, 2 deep zone, 3 deep zone or 4 deep zone?
that for you to figure out

I also can't see it coming out this year regardless of the website. Jim may have had great intentions to have it out this year when he wrote that and maybe life has gotten in the way.
Of course it also could be that there has been so little buzz in recent months/year/decades :D that may be I have both forgotten Jim's M.O., and the anticipation I felt in the past when I knew there was a new version forthcoming.

I find it amazing the number of people that think Jim is somehow being dishonest or disengenuous when he says there will be an update before the end of the year. Like they have some secret insight or that Jim has renigged on deadlines in the past.
To my knowledge, Jim has always delivered when (or very close to when?) he said he would. I have no doubt that if he says there will be something by the end of the year, that there will be something by the end of the year. If this was Daivd Winter or Blizzard or some other company that is known for moving dates, ok... but to my knowledge Jim has not done this.

Although, "early next year" could mean April or May, it's really hard to say. I just know if I was going to undertake something like a pretty large scale move that I would want to have all my ducks in a row, have my product pretty well finished at that point.
Unless the codename for the next product is Maximum Front Office. ;)

What if the move and family responsibilities were more than you initially expected and over time you realized you had to put more effort into those than the product you are developing? Especially if you knew that if you released it months after you intially planned, the same "market" and consumers were likely to buy the product?
I think we are (ok, I am) reading way too much into comments. Can I change my vote to a release year in 1993?

I don't think anyone feels Jim is being dishonest, but delays happen all the time and I'd think it's especially difficult for a one man developer who has a lot of other things going on in his life. I know I certainly am not going to hold Jim to a higher standard than everyone else in the industry. The statement that everyone seems to be throwing around has been on the website for a long time and we all know Jim doesn't give out much info nor does he update his website all that often so if a delay had happened it's very possible that info would not have leaked out. I think a lot of folks are just trying to temper their expectations especially after last year's "announcement" that many expected to be about a game release and were disappointed. In the end, it doesn't really matter to me when his next game gets released, I'll most likely buy it.

I think that it has been rare in the past that Jim has given any sort of long term date for a release. When he has said, the game is ready, It'll be out in two days, he has delivered. I think there was one blurb on his website in the past indicating that a new game would be out in a certain year, (2004?, 2005?) the only time I remember a long term projection from him, and later announced he had abandoned it.
I think it is possible to have doubts about a release being ready without doubting Jim's honesty. We all know that putting long term dates on huge projects is largely speculative, and that often things pop up to delay them and things often take longer than we think. The only things we know for sure is that Jim is working on an update to at least one of his franchises and that he won't release it until it meets his high standards for quality. If it doesn't meet them by the end of the year, it won't be released, of that I am confident.
I have personally given up waiting with baited breath for an announcement. It'll be released when its released, and I'll buy TCY on release day, and FOF6 if and when IHOF requires the upgrade, and I'm sure I'll consider the purchase worthwhile. But, I won't be upset if its March.

I would be excited to no end if a game comes out before year end, but I just don't feel confident. That confidence is not based on any hard facts at all, just my gut feeling.
Many people, definitely myself included, make proclamations that they have perfect intentions on fulfilling by a certain date, that just don't happen for whatever reason (diets, new job, paying off credit cards, taking a vacation).

Don't wait up. It'll be tomorrow, most likely in the afternoon. ViaTech has to set up the storefront.

oh i won't wait up for that. that's just my normal bedtime considering the ~4 hours of sleep i need to function for work (and even then that'll be 5 hours). But thanks for narrowing it down! :D
and congrats! are we going to be seeing more integration of more stuff from FootballOutsiders and advertising for the game over there btw?

It is too bad, TCY needed an "upgrade" a hell of a lot more than FOF.
Agreed. Arles gains a customer with this release.

you all have me to thank. my reverse psychology caused Jim to *want* to release the game this year as a way to stick it to me.
Maybe, but of course, if you got your way this would have just been an announcement that the game will be released in three years, so start getting hyped now. :)
