With my birthday falling in the next couple of days, I am reminded of the time on my 6th birthday when I won a brand new Huffy bicycle from a grocery store in town. Complete with Banana style seat! To date, that probably remains the most expensive item I have ever won in a free entry type contest, whether it be years of McDonalds Monopoly, various candy bar wrapper contests, etc. I wouldn't enclude lottery, cause that's more of a gambling type thing. Whereas a candy bar contest, you were just buying the candy bar anyways, the contest is just a bonus.

Second best prize I ever won was a copy of some Soccer game for the PS2 from McDonalds, but I never turned it in and claimed it.

So who's actually won some of this good stuff they are giving away in these various contests?

I won a basketball from one of those Sprite "look under the cap" games. But I lost it playing basketball. Actually, I didn't lose it, I just got tired and didn't want to stop the game to get my ball back....so I left without it and never saw it again. (No, I did not get beat up, I just left)

I won 40 candy bars once at a cub scout raffle drawing. Granted, I was only competiting against the other kids at the gym, but it was still pretty cool.

I purchased some movie online, and was auto entered into a drawing for a collection of foreign DVDs I had never heard of - when i won, they gave me the choice of the movies (they were about $30 each, at least 5 or 6 of them) or the value, so I was able to purchase some games, CDs, DVDs that I actually wanted.

My wife won a trip to the Bahamas through some radio contest before we met. It was an ugliest mom contest for Mother's Day, and my wife was about 19 at the time... so she actually won it for her mom, who promptly took her stepdad to the Bahamas with her and left her home.

Back in my college days I would call into radio shows and win free tickets and stuff like that all the time. I think the best thing I ever won was a limo trip to Pittsburgh to see a concert and backstage passes.

Won tickets to see the Bulls play Golden State in 1989. I also sold a winning raffle ticket to my Dad at that same event and got $50 for selling the ticket (he got $500).

I don't think I have won a thing in the last 17 years - burned through all the random luck in one sitting.

Won a pair of tickets (including parking) to see the Dodgers and Padres play back in May, and got to see Andre Ethier get his first big league hit.

I won Colts/Ravens tickets in 2004 over the radio by correctly guessing how many rookie cheerleaders the Colts had that year.

I was on the way home from work when they asked the question. First person to show up at their remote with the correct answer got the tickets. The remote site was on my route home. I called the wife and had her count them on the Colts website and was first to show up with the answer.

I won tickets to an Eagles' game back in 91 through a local radio trivia contest. They weren't very good seats, but they were free. :)

I won a bunch of Mad Catz peripherals for the Dreamcast a long time ago.

Planet Dreamcast held a contest, and I came up 2nd place which comprised of a steering wheel/pedal set, extra controllers, and a light gun. I think I entered the contest at the last minute..

My dad's car dealership once gave out a prize to go to Super Bowl XXXIX, and the guy who won returned it, saying "I don't want to go." So I got to go. It was pretty cool.

When I was a little kid, there was a new video store that opened up by house called LV Video. As a way to get people in, they raffled off a brand-new, just-released Atari Jaguar system. Well, my sister's best friend was one of the new employees, and she happened to rig it for me to win.

So that was the best thing I ever won in a contest by cheating.

Even though the system sucked.

I didn't? Crap, I should go tie that up. I think I missed the actual day of the Super Bowl, too. Gah...I really can't finish any dynasty ever :)

EDIT -- Missed writing about it. I did NOT miss the Super Bowl.

When I was about 8 or 9, I won the 4 KISS solo albums from a radio station. My mom took me to the station to collect and I got to meet the DJ. Not much of a celebrity, sure, but at that age I thought I'd won the friggin world championship of awesomeness.

About a month ago I found out that I won the 2nd Chance drawing for the Texas Hold'em scratch off game from the Texas Lottery. If you had a losing ticket, you could fill out the area on the back and mail it in. I had forgotten I had done that, until two big ole boxes appeared at the door. I won:

Poker Table Top with felt, and 8 areas for chips and drinks
Set of WPT Poker chips in a cool rotating mahogany chip holder
Card Shuffler
2 decks of WPT playing cards
Set of 8 tumblers with the WPT logo on a cloth patch inside the tumbler
WPT Wall Clock
WPT Baseball hat
WPT Sunglasses
WPT Blanket
WPT Rollaround ice chest

I won "The Making of Thriller" on VHS via a radio call-in. I had no idea there was a contest going on and was only trying to call in to request a song. Next thing I know is, "you're the winner, man!"

I'm thinking I won a car or $5k or something nice, but I only won a stupid video tape :(.

My brother put my name in a drawing and I got to do the bat race at an El Paso Diablos game. I beat some old guy in the race and won a ball autographed by the entire team...two of whom actually made it to the bigs (Jeff Cirillo and Scott Karl).
